blame achievements and online gaming

devs don't want you do get them cheevos for nothing for some reason and you would have hackers quicker on online games that most companies wouldn't bother to patch or take care of

/thread
>>
Achievements mostly but also because they were memory injection devices that did the same thing most modchips did via kernel exploits.

In fact Codebreaker can be used to soft mod ps2s.
>>
Cause games are too fucking easy nowadays to use cheat codes.
>>
>>338102570
ding ding ding
>>
>>338101021
It's not as easy to exploit the new hardware as it was with older systems. Software updates could render the cheat device unusable or get the player banned and even brick their consoles. Not to mention the stigma there would be against such a device should it open a popular game to online cheating.
Remember the Action Replay on the DS and how many online games it ruined with god-mode Hunters players and endless stars in Mario Kart?

You'll still see flash-carts and commercial mod chips, which are basically the same thing, but you won't see anything as mainstream as the Gameshark or Action Replay again. There's also less need for a device in general as most modern hardware has softmod potential.
>>
No money to be made in it. Console modding is much more widespread, the mere idea of Gameshark/AR is frowned upon due to achievements and such, and online multiplayer being so mainstream means devs REALLY don't want you selling a cheat device. There's also the upkeep required with firmware updates.
>>
>>338101021
Modern consoles have an OS layer that prevents manipulation of memory for security purposes, which is how cheat devices work.
>>
>>338101021

Heavy focus on online gaming as well as achievements.
>>
PC still has trainers, at least. What a dumb name though :/
>>
>>338101021
Because they want to sell cheats as DLC
>>
>>338105275
this!

except it's not cheats anymore, just characters and outfits, bonus levels, etc
>>
>>338101985
How did achievements kill off cheat devices?

Not being a smart ass, genuinely curious.
>>
>>338105683
Because then you could just cheat your achievements. Even when games have in-game cheats (See: GTA4), using them disables achievements/trophies entirely.
>>
>>338101021
Cheating isn't cool anymore. Thank goodness.

Because the superior version was cheaper, can play burned games without a mod-chip, and didn't require a boot disc.
>>
>>338101021
>Friend brings a gameshark over
>boot up GTA:SA
>fuck around with the four jump modifier codes and the bunnyhop modifer codes
>they stack with each other
>and also stack with the in game jump/bunnyhop codes
>get on to a slightly inclined driveway and bunnyhop shooting halfway across the map and hitting a lake so hard game physics didn't register CJ as swimming, skipping him across the lake like a stone
Post your best AR/Shark stories
>>
>>338101021
Because they can sell that shit as microtransactions.
>>
>>338101021
Because people cheated in online games on PC and everyone saw how annoying that was.
>>
>>338101021
It still exists. It's just not marketed at all.

>>338101309
>implying devs have any say in the matter
Did you really think that the GameShark guys ask every dev for permission to include an unlimited money cheat for each of their games? They can do whatever the fuck they want.
>>
>>338105837
That sounds more of a selling point than anything.
>>
>>338106246
dude, all your REALLY doing is just changing the hex values for shit

you just have no other way to do it other than a cheat device which i haven't seen for 7th or 8th gen consoles being sold at retail that doesn't require CFW
>>
>>338106176
make the gameshark offline only obviously
>>
>>338106246
>game save cheats
so it doesn't give you crazy physics or unlimited ammo(unless a value of -1 acts like infinity)?
>>
>>338106176
even if that were possible there would just be a million videos showing you how to trick your console into thinking its offline when it's online and it would be a giant shitfest
>>
>>338106461
I know how these devices work. The person I quoted implied they no longer exist because devs don't want them to exist. Devs have literally zero power over them.
>>
>>338101021
It's a lot more difficult to get an unlicensed device working on consoles today than it's ever been. Not that it was necessarily easy back then but with today consoles are constantly connected to the internet. It is very easy to roll out patches to block whatever exploits an unlicensed device may use.

The unlicensed device needs to be update-able in some way so it can dodge new patches released on consoles. At that point, it becomes a game of cat and mouse between the maintainers of the console and the ones making the unlicensed device. The consumer is left in the middle. Do they forgo updating their console to use the device? Do they say fuck it so that they can access the online shop and play online?

TL;DR
It is a lot more risky to make such devices with today's consoles.
>>
>>338106717
meant for >>338106560

also
>on disc DLC or DLC with compatibility pack
>just gameshark it in!
jews would never let it happen.
>>
>>338101021
Because 3 reasons

Achievements

DLC

And online gaming
>>
>>338106683
I haven't seen any cheats involving physics. But max ammo is pretty common. It's mostly max level/skill points/money/character unlocks/all item unlocks, etc.
>>
>>338101021
Millennials don't know what the fuck this is.
>>
>>338106818
>The unlicensed device needs to be update-able in some way so it can dodge new patches released on consoles.

Put a usb slot on it so you can download updates via the internet. If the makers of the device are adamant about it they would keep up with the console updates. It would also benefit them by letting them put out patches to fix bugs on their device. Hell they could even try and throw in a code that disables achievements when using the device.
>>
>>338106382
It's not when game designers use achievements for retention value. Some very sad shitters use achievements as status symbols, and that adds value to the game.

Trivialize that and you lose normie sales.
>>
>>338107740
I don't disagree. It is totally doable but that is still more work required for the group making the device. Before the internet, you didn't need to have such measures. One less thing to think about. The worst it got was when companies made new hardware revisions to consoles.
>>
>>338107740
But would the device sell enough to warrant such upkeep?
>>
>>338108963
>such upkeep?
depends how big the team is
