Does an SSD make a difference in PC games?

...or is it dick-waving placebo?
>>
Drastically reduced load times, but don't expect a higher fps or anything retarded like that.
>>
>>338086512
In load times, yes of course. Ive had very noticeable differences after switching to one
>>
>>338086512
You install your OS to it, then use large plate drives for other things.
>>
>>338086512
Does game benefits from faster loading?
Yes.
Does the game is so unoptimized that it takes more than 15 second to load?
Yes
Multiple load screens every now and then?
Hell yes.
Better load speed gives you advantage over other players in multiplayer?
Yes.
>>
I put my OS and an MMO I play frequently on mine and the loading time improvement for both is absolutely crazy.
>>
>>338086512
>tfw I bought an SSD for me PS4 that was more expensive than the console
worth it, everything runs like butter
>>
>>338087937
silky smooth buttery 25fps
>>
It reduces load times but you are better off spending the money on a better GPU or CPU desu senpai
>>
Game performance nothing noticeable

its more for you OS and other programs
>>
some games load faster
thats all a faster harddrive could ever do
>>
>>338087995
long texture loading was a real problem on the shitty launch HDDs, never had a problem since
>>
>>338086876
Is it relatively easy to move your OS to an SSD?

I've been putting it off and just have a SSD laying around being useless
>>
>>338088231
with disk cloning you can
>>
>2 seconds to boot the PC
>game load times are almost instant
People who say SSD is a meme are retards
>>
>>338088508
Its a /g/ meme to troll people, like the U2414h is bad meme, or the not updating to W10 meme.
>>
>>338088651
>like the U2414h is bad
what's their basis for this?

it was my old monitor which I sold because I hated how it reverted to 16-255
>>
>>338088651
That last one is not a meme at all.
>>
>>338089134
I upgraded to play forza apex, it's not as bad as the memers make it out to be.
>>
my os runs windows 7 great.

If I had the money I'd put all my streaming/webm software on a SSD.
>>
>>338088859
>what's their basis for this?

losing the panel lottery, it happens more often than not.
>>
SSDs are a nice quality of life improvement. Their prices have gone down drastically for the past year. You can get 120GB ones for like 40 bucks now, and that's enough for the OS and a few modern games that are fuck huge.

>>338088651
Don't know why anyone wouldn't want to at least try W10, considering they are still giving it out the upgrade for free for another month or so if you have any W7 installed.

Just pirate W7 and upgrade that to W10.
>>
>>338086512

BF4 is literally unplayable without one
>>
>>338086512
Launch and load fast. That's it.

If you're on a budget, just get a 256GB SSD and install your OS and must-have games on it. Use no more than half the data though because SSDs begin to slow down after 50% of the data's used up.
>>
A lot of games have hitching, whenever the game needs to load a texture immediately, that goes away or is reduced with an SSD. It's very obvious in Path of Exile, though that game has one of the worst engines known to man.
>>
>>338087937
why on Earth wouldnt you just buy a gaymin PC instead of throwing money on an outdated at launch piece of technology?
>>
SSD makes you shit load faster.

I use it for my OS and for CC.
My PC boots in something like 10 seconds (rather than 2 minutes on my old 7200RPM C drive on my older PC) and Photoshop loads in 4.

It's pretty great to have an SSD for stuff like that, but I still use a 7200RPM HDD for games and stuff I don't use much.
>>
>>338089627
I tried it, HFApplocale doesnt work with it, Filezilla on W10 makes the computer to turn off, not shut down, literally just turn off, software incompatibility, hardware incompatibility, no reason to upgrade yet, meme spying, etc.

Have a solid state for my OS and a regular drive for my steam library and it's shitty. Doom levels take over a minute to load, which is especially frustrating for challenge runes since the game has to load up the challenge then load the stage again when you leave. And the audio, specifically the music, will cut out every so often for about 5 seconds while loading from my old hard drive. When I watch people play on solid state drives their level load time is about 5 seconds. Thinking about spending $345 on a 960gb solid state drive just for my steam library.
>>
>>338088231
>Is it relatively easy to move your OS to an SSD?

yes. you can either clone your drive or start form scratch. people for some reason have this weird fear of starting over but there's plenty of utilities out there to do stuff like backing up all your browser and e-mail client data into a neat little file and restoring it all at once. download all your drivers in advance and put them all in a bootable thumb drive with windows and you can be back up and running in half an hour or less.
>>
>>338086512

>are faster load times better?

What the hell kind of question is that?

If you play team-based multiplayer games (TF2, Overwatch, RO2, etc.) you'll always have first pick of teams/classes/heroes because a vast majority of people still load games off of mechanical drives.
>>
>>338090384
why aren't you putting online games like doom on your ssd in the first place?
>>
>>338089283
win7 was great
win8 was shit
win10 is a mix of 7 and 8, its great but it still has some shit in it i.e. tablet&smartphone cancer including its own Siri clone
>>
>>338090384
I've never had any of the issues you mentioned and I do the same thing. Only issue I have is that Origin only lets you choose one drive for all of your games, but Steam games work perfectly fine for me.
>>
>>338090384
>WD Blue

A 1TB Black is cheaper than your 500GB Blue right now.
>>
It will help with load times, but that's about it.

I have one, but I don't use it for vidya. I have my OS on it along with some regularly used programs. I've got a 3TB HDD for vidya and other media.

>>338086619

First posts are best posts. Games load near-instantly on SSDs, but you won't see frame rate improvements if you don't already have the equipment otherwise.
>>
>>338090663
>Only issue I have is that Origin only lets you choose one drive for all of your games
You can just go into the options and change the install folder to another drive prior to downloading something. Origin will still recognize prior install folders on different drives.
>>
They're shit for cold storage though
>>
>>338090770
I fucked up and compared a Canadian Blue with an American Black. Anyway, point is that a 1TB WD Black is cheap now. I don't understand how someone could just dump everything in a 980Ti and not spend a dime on a good HDD.
>>
>>338090729

whats the point
>>
>>338091126
Because WD Blues are already good.
>>
>>338086512
Sort of. Makes you load way faster and for me I was having a glitch in BF4 where the disk kept going to 100% in task manager and lagging like hell and a ssd fixed it, likely cus it doesnt have a disk and the problem was probably from loading too much

loading times are marginally better but you're gonna be spending a lot of money on an SSD that would actually hold more than like, three modern games on it

buy a SSD to install your OS to, install one of your favorite multiplayer games on it, stick with your HDD for everything else
>>
There's no excuse for not having an SSD since 2013. The impact when it comes to game varies wildly, but for general usage it's just a no brainer and you're a literal hobo if you don't have one.
>>
>>338086512
Depends on game. I have Silent Hunter 5 installed on a SSD and it really doesn't make any difference that I can tell.
>>
>>338091418
Yeah a decent quality with good speed 120GB SSD is $33, and $48 for the 240GB one (ADATA SP550).
>>
>>338088231
Yes but you'll need a third drive if you want to save stuff since you'll have to format your HDD that the is was installed on
>>
>>338086512
load times improve drastically. you won't get any more frames performance wise though. Also don't keep important information on an ssd if it decides to die.

Basically use a ssd for OS and vidya you play alot. Keep everything else on a mechanical drive
>>
>>338091658

>>

Mine was like 120 bucks and I got it from ebay for cheaper than normal too. It was a Samsung one too.
>>
I have the 850 evo and its amazing for huge stalker mods like StalkerSoup

on a traditional drive that shit takes minutes to load a area but on the SSD it loads < 1 min.
>>
>>338091789
$120 USD for a samsung 240GB SSD? dude you got scammed hard.
>>
>>338091126
there is no practical difference between blues and black anymore.

they both have 64mb of cache (which you'll never use outside of synthetic benchmarks) and the only real difference is warranty period which in all likelihood you'll never use past the first year. for a drive you''re only going to put 'non important' games, music, and whatever else on, a blue is more than enough.

the only drives you need be careful with are greens because they spin lower and tend to use more aggressive head parking and other power saving things.
>>
>>338089283
>upgrading to windows 10 just for one game

You could have dual-booted it like I did. It's kind of nice being able to shift between the two operating systems, but Win10 feels like it's still missing some key features, especially with customization.
>>
>>338091719
>have both
>only buy a 120gb ssd for OS and a favourite game
>2tb hdd for everything that doesnt need the load times
>save hundreds of dollars

or you could go and spend a lot of money, but there are reasons for suggesting what he did
>>
>>338091719
unless things have changed recently, SSDs are still expensive for their storage capacity. getting an hdd thats like 6 tb for 80 bucks is better than getting a 250 gb ssd for 80 bucks

games are like 50 gigs anymore you ain't gonna fit much on a 250 gig ssd

There is only like a single WD blue with 64mb of cache on that list. Actually maybe 2 if you don't count refurbished. Most of those drives are rebranded WD Greens.

>windows update keeps hanging

if you mean checking for updates, just keep stop starting the update service until it kicks in.
>>
>>338092534
If you mean it's getting stuck at "Searching for updates," then it' literally searching for over a hundred updates for your system due to being out for a decade. I remember having to just let my PC sit out for like 10 hours to search for updates when setting up my OS on my SSD.
>>
>>338092752
Yeah, lasting 80 years instead of 100 is so bad.
>>
>>338092767

>stop starting

define that, via task manager or?

I found a solution earlier but it involves fucking about with cmd to bypass the updater tool (without having to turn networking off) so that it updates.

>>338092838
Yeah that's a consideration, though most help posts end up pointing to a tool which updates it to increase the performance of the updater. so it turns that wait into a 1~2 hour one
>>
>>338092758
all blues 750gb and up are 64mb mate, go check wd site if you're still having trouble grasping this.

It was around $114 though. I had even looked on Amazon and saw it for around the same price.

They are games, not your pagefile.
Chrome in your SSD is worse for games, but for a decent SSD this is literally nothing.
>>
>>338092986
Maybe you have trouble grasping the "rebranded WD green" line, are you illiterate? Literally 2 WD blues with 64mb cache on the model list on WD site are actually WD blues.

The 750GB one and the 1TB one. Everything else is either 32mb cache, 16mb cache or a rebranded WD Green.
>>

>>
>>338090384
230 for a 960gb

my understanding is that games won't benefit from a high end ssd like 850 pro but rather a entry level ssd already provides a massive upgrade wrt loading times compared to a traditional hdd.
>>
>>338093172

alright, I'll try this ontop of whatever else I attempt tomorrow as a crude fix before fucking with things. thanks for chiming in anon
