Two wooden planks atop
There's your sword.
Or, use two cobblestone for a stone sword. Do the same with iron when you get it and make an iron sword.
Save your gold. Do not craft it with anything.

And you can change the difficulty in the options setting. Don't think you have to play in normal or hard. Peaceful can be good for you until you get your first set of iron equipment and a shield.
