It's kind of both.At the end of Doom 64 he stays in Hell to kill off every Demon one by one. The demons realize they'll never kill him directly and resort to just sealing him away. Their plan somehow works, and they completely take over Earth and merge it with Hell. So basically you're playing as the protagonist of the original canon in another dimension, so it's still sort of a reboot.

I think the fact that he cannot die cheapens the character he used to be this badass who survived through literal hell solely because of his marksmanship, agility, strenght, fortitude and propably being a serial killer before he got his job now he can let demons shred him and brush it off because he's unstoppable.
