They are dying because the principle thing that they sell at physical retail -- video games -- have seen a steady creep of digital sales. The increase in releasing old, remastered titles on Steam and console digital networks also dampens demand for older used systems.
This is why Gamestop themselves have a corporate plan to have 50% of their revenue come from merchandise other than video games in the near future. We'll see how that goes for them.
