Honestly, NMH2 is the only sequel I can think of that exists that is literally on par with it's predecessor. It's not better or worse, it's exactly the same quality. It's different though, is the odd thing.

The gameplay was a massive step down. Levels were poorly designed in terms of layout and structure (many were fucking massive with elevated platforms you could easily be knocked off of, forcing you to backtrack an absurdly long path), enemies had massively bloated HP bars, numerous bosses were either forgettable or plain terrible to fight, and the dual beam katanas were the only ones worth using. The first game was pretty much a slots and darkstep simulator outside of the bossfights, but at least it was fun in an arcade-y "how many mob enemies can I kill with one execution?" sort of way. The only improvement I can think of in the second game is that the ranged enemies were toned down a bit, and the minigames.

While I'm not a big fan of the second game, I do think the scene following Alice's death is the high point of the series. Seeing Travis so absolutely livid was something else.

Its difficult to say; I've only played DmC since Capcom seemed nice enough to give it out in a Humble Bundle, so I can't offer you a gameplay comparison. But I was very impressed with it as an action game. You have a HUGE selection of abilities and attacks at your disposal, and that alongside a few different kinds of weapons means you have a lot of freedom in combat to fight your own way. Visually speaking, the game is gorgeous, and the environment changes as you move through it, which is kind of neat. From what I've seen, combat is slower than it is in DMC3 and DMC4, but its not dreadfully slow or anything God of War-like. Boss fights are somewhat challenging and require you to dodge and block and some enemies require you to figure out their weak points in order to beat them (I was pleasantly surprised to find that the game won't explain itself for every enemy) . Its a fun enough action game, I think, and its worth a few bucks at least to try it.
