Now that the GTX 1080 has shown it can deliver 60 fps at 4K...
What is your excuse for not using 4K?
>>
>>338044428
I plan to

My first PC build will use a the 4K ROG swift
>>
I myself am waiting for 3440x1440 g sync monitors to become more affordable before I upgrade, but it's nice to see actually running it is feasible
>>
Moar pixuhls aren't worth $700

Because then I can't have 100+Hz Freesync on a 4ms IPS panel.

Nicememes.
>>
>>338045741
You can have 4K G-sync IPS though
>>
is the diffrence really that big between 4k and full hd?

Can you really "see" it or is it just "nice to have"
>>

Not enough games support it properly yet. I don't want to deal with fuck tiny UI/letterboxes when I'm playing older stuff

It's big. If you have the chance go to a store or turn on dynamic super resolution and try it yourself.

Literally what? Pretty much every game that's been released in the past 8 years supports it fine
>>
>>338045992
Oh shit, we're talking about desktops. Carry on. I thought we were talking about TVs. Either way, I still think 4K is a meme, at least for vidya and movies.

OT but I'm looking to upgrade my dual SLI GTX660's with something that'll last me the coming 4 years or so.
Would a GTX 950 still do the trick or should I look for soemthing in a higher price class?
Just 1080p obviously no need for 4K stuff.

I'll be getting a 1080 and upgrading to 1440p for a smooth 60.
>>

Maybe a game released in 2009.
>>
>>338045965
Not a fan of gysync, its just a vsync that actually works, and for fast paced games, 144hz + gysync will always be better. And for that, its 1080 or 2k at the most afaik.

Frame rate has more priority right now. Also, IPS is a marketing term, they are nothing like the accurate IPS monitors of the past, and most of them fail to meet the requirements of IPS. Companies just use it to sell average monitors to you, only distingished enough that they arent shitty TN panels that they used to sell to us.

Im running a 3440x1440 monitor but it only has 60Hz. I kinda wanna get a 120Hz G-sync but I dont feel like buying a new monitor again so soon. Also my 980ti would struggle to get modern games at 120fps so I wopuld also need to buy a new gpu. Maybe when the 1080ti comes out...

No matter how you swing it, a GTX 1080 would last you longer if you played games at 1080p compared to if you demanded 4K.

For me, being able to play at high fidelity for a year or two extra is worth more than an upgrade from 1080p to 4K.

I could hardly notice the difference is all. Not saying its a placebo. These monitors just already have a mega high refresh rate and millisecond response times. I don't bother with it anymore. At 960 pixels per seconds, you would be hard pressed to notice pixel level blurring.
>>
>>338047850
Reminder that Lightboost isn't perfect though
It completely depends on your Framerate/Hertz Rate/Strobe Rate

I wish Laser Beam Steering Displays(using the technology from Celluon's Laser Projectors) were a thing already since they're practically the new CRT in that they have no persistence blur whatsoever(CRT always have a bit due to phosphor) and that they can multi-sync(no fixed-pixel garbage)
>>
>>338047797
Can already play at high fidelity with 700 series cards.

I'll get a 1080ti, for now it's all about choosing the right display. I can't wait to ascend past 1080p

>>338048373
I'm on a GTX 780 actually and even though it's for the most part still kicking ass, I definitely do have to turn down options in some instances, I don't imagine it's gonna last me more than a year at most.

Ips monitors have awful backlight bleed, all the 144hz screens come with at least 10 dead pixels, the color accuracy is about on par with high end TN panels unless you buy a 1K plus "professional" display. Ips panels have 8+ millescond g2g times, all for slightly better black depth and viewing angles. Do you usually play games with your monitor at a 45 degree angle?

Before anyone makes a mistake, let me remind you to NOT get a 4k monitor that is 27 inches. A monitor that tiny at that resolution is going to be unreadable without display scaling, which is terrible on Windows. Get a Korean 40" panel if you want glorious 4k without display scaling. I recommend the AMH A409U. 4K at 40" has about the same PPI as a 1440p monitor at 27". 40" is the sweetspot for 4k monitors. You may think it's too big, but I promise you that it isn't. I will never go back to a tiny 27" monitor ever again after using one of these.

What games can it do 4K/60 because almost every benchmark shows it doing 4K/30 reliably, but not hitting 60FPS for maxed out games.

Rise of the Tomb Raider, DOOM, Crysis 3... Most newer games, it can't really hit it at reference clock speeds. And even at 2.4GHZ with the OC cards, it still may not.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but what games is it hitting 4K/60? For older games, probably. Maybe. I don't believe FFX-2 can even do that with it's stuttering at even 30FPS at 4K, but that's another issue if it's coded like crap.

Also, if you're running at 4K resolution, is anti-aliasing needed? The higher resolution you go, the less need for it it becomes. Going to 4K is like getting 4xSSAA?
>>
>>338058027
It's totally worth it. It's just big enough to take up most of your vision when sitting close, yet not big enough to make you move your head to see everything on the screen. It's the perfect size for a monitor.

Not at all. I always have it turned off, and everything is sharp as a tack without it. No jaggies.

I'm able to hit 50-60FPS at 4k with most games on a 970 if I play with the settings a bit. Turn off AA and bump 1 or 2 resource hog settings things down to high or medium, and I can usually get really good smooth gameplay on almost any game.

How? Gtx 950, i5, 8 gbs of ram, and Windows 10 are all good.

Plus it's case can fit in your entertainment system and can support both 4K and VR.

Uh m8...I think you may have been mislead

950 can barely do 1080p
>>
>>338044428
4k for computer monitors is a meme. At 27 inches I cannot see why I would need more than 1440p. There is barely any difference if I put the games down to 1080p for better FPS.

Don't listen to retards, it depends on the size of the monitor.

For example on a phone screen you will not see the difference between 720 and 1080p, let alone 1080p and 4k

In the 20 - 30 inch range it remains a meme. At 32 inch 1440p is fine but you can see a slight difference between it and 4k, and the higher you go from there the more 4k matters.

4k looks very good even at very high sizes like 50-60 inches whereas 1080p looks like shit at that size (ignoring distance from monitor, which also matters.)

Ok, fair, let me actually articulate myself.

4k for computer monitors is a scam. It is a ploy to get you to spend more money on something you do not need simply because the numbers are higher.

At 20 inch resolutions you do not need that much pixels because it will make such a negligible visual difference almost all derived effects will be placebo.

If you are getting a large display, 4k makes sense, but most people do not have 40 inch computer monitors therefore it is irrelevant to most consumers.

Is that better?
>>
>>338044428
Where has it shown anything higher than 45fps at 4k?
>>
>>338061054
>>338061190
>>338061426
What is this meant to prove

You'd need a 1080p, 1440p and 4K monitor to compare them
>>
>>338061112
There is a big difference between 720p and 1080p on a phone screen. Having more pixels per inch creates a sharper image with less aliasing.

>>338062027
Yeah you won't be able to play 4k or VR with that

Oculus even has the absolute minimum on their site, gtx 970.
>>
>>338061821
I have a 5.3 inch screen that is 720p. I cannot see individual pixels. A 1080p screen at this size would be pointless.

For something like those large galaxy phones you might get a slight benefit out of the sharpness increase but at this size it's entirely pointless.

Yes, technically it will be sharper but that doesn't mean the information going into your eye will perceive it as such.
>>
>>338062027
You'll be able to do 4K at 60hz on the desktop just fine, but you won't get good framerates in game at 4k or on VR with that card.

>>

I'm not actually into VR but just saying if it does become a thing atleast I'll be ready. And true no 4K gaming but just 4K media. I noticed the product page says 950 but when you click on more specs it says 960. But good news is it can support a full size GPU and up to 3 hard drives.
>>
>>338055273
depends on the game, with non founders expanding its powerdraw and 2way SLI it shouldnt have a problem with current games
>>
>>338062917
Uh no you won't be ready you fucking idiot

What don't you understand

That card cannot run VR games or 4K games

That card will output 4K at 60HZ over display port, so it will be fine for watching 4k movies, but it won't get playable frame rates in most games at 4k. You can probably play older games like Vanilla WoW or Psychonauts at 4k, however.
>>

Why is 4k not actually 4k like 1080?

There are two standards

4k, and UHD 4k.

Most use UHD 4k as it is the consumer standard.

I'm more excited about HEVC than 4k.

Seriously, i'm amazed by how good it looks at fucking low ass files sizes. I'll check the file sizes and expect YIFFY blocky bullshit and it just looks great.

I'm at 1080 on a 780ti.

Will probably upgrade to 1080ti and play at 2560x1440. Makes the card last longer and will be a good upgrade for me either way.
