If you count the 3 games as only one, it is the first fire emblem that has 3 times the content of an average entry. Sacred Stones was only 20ish chapter games, and choosing between Ephraim or Eirika meant only 3 different maps.
20+ maps per campaign is pretty much a big deal you know? Especially considering that removing the grind in Conquest and enabling it in Birthright make the game completely different.

FE7 brought absolutely nothing to FE6 if not for thieves being able to be promoted into assassins and bandit being able to become berserkers. It was a 30 chapter game with 10 being the tutorial, and it just had a cool end boss. What was valuable was the map, the story and a different cast.
FE8 had less than 25 chapters, reused most assets of FE6-7, added the branching promotions and added several new class + two shitty optional trials, just there for you to grind.
In both cases no one complained. Here you have 2 very different game modes with a very different difficulty setting sold for 40$ but being priced at 40$ each. I don't see why it would be more of a scam than what IS did with the fire emblem GBA entries.
The same goes for Advance Wars 1 and 2. AW2 added maybe 2-3 new units and 12+ new charactes, the game was the same nonetheless and the balance was pretty much exactly the same in both games.
You can blame IS for the DLC maps that are too expensive for what they bring, but 2 different games sold separately is not that farfetched to me.

You misunderstand. If you take Nohr, Hoshido, and the SE and decrypt them using Decrypt9, you are given the exact same files at the exact same size. The only difference is the scenario folder, which is founder under "rom > m > A/B/C". The @E folder holds all general assets, while the A/B/C folders are for Hoshido, Nohr, and Invisible Kingdom, respectively. The SE has all 3 folders, while Hoshido and Nohr only have A and B, respectively.
They're the EXACT same games, minus that single folder. The SE is 2Gb, Hoshido is 2Gb, and Nohr is 2Gb. There is no difference in size, and combining them doesn't make the game 6Gb (it just adds the 6Mb folders of A/B/C that you're missing).

The problem is that Japan was able to pay ~$62 USD for the SE. That's the average price of a full 3DS game in Japan. In other words, all 3 routes were sold at the price of one game there, and were even advertised as such. In America, we're paying $40 for a single route, and $80 for all 3. That's double the price of a single game for all 3 routes, while Japan only had to pay the price of a single game for all 3 routes.
Also, you can build your own SE ROM by simply injecting all 3 folders (A/B/C) into any ROM of your choice, and it'll work. You can take a Hoshido ROM, put all 3 route folders in it, rebuild the ROM, and it'll suddenly change to say it's a ROM of the SE. Basically, the game is already all 3 routes, but you just need that 6Mb folder to make it work. All the assets are there, but you need the "unlock key" to use them.

It's "mostly" done. Everything but supports is fully translated, and you can apply the patch to the US version of the game (it also uncensors and undubs the game). Anything that isn't translated (some of the supports) just uses the NoA default.

Those games ended up being easy due to something exploitable, they weren't actively designed to be brainless to cater to brainless people
Characters are a similar deal. People love to pretend 'Oh fire emblem characters were always zany anime tropes!'. And this is true, partially. The important thing is that these 'silly' animeish characters like L'Arachel were the MINORITY while now they are the MAJORITY. In old FE there was at least some attempt to have most of the cast be characters in themselves, and the silly characters were largely there to be laughed at.
Now fast forward to fates, where characters aren't really characters themselves so much as walking tropes, who live and die for their gimmick and don't really feel like real characters. The few characters who are written like real characters are now the ones played on by the silly characters for comic relief, the characters that take themselves seriously are now the jokes.
This leads to one of the worst problems with fates, when it does suddenly turn around and try to be serious it completely fails because the vast majority of the characters and the setting were made to pander, not be a world. As a result when it does try to tell a serious story it utterly failed because it was so out of place.
That's the big difference. Fire Emblem used to at least try to take itself seriously, now it purely tries to pander. It took what was originally a minor silly element of its games and made that the whole thing.
