everything i've seen of doom has been a literal corridor shooter broken up by rooms of auto-spawn segments then back into linear single route corridors. its getting praised so i assume that just the tutorial segment at the start of the game i keep seeing over and over because apparently reviewers only got footage of that - but talk about good level design and oldskool FPS style over it.

I always love Tycho's newsposts on these issues.

>I get codes sometimes, God knows why, but if somebody doesn’t send me a code I don’t come on here and say “mean man no send me code” in a way that isn’t intended as a joke about trying to scam codes. [...]

>As often as not, in the reviews I read from The Review Places I frequent, the software product is just grist for some kind of creative writing project slash performance art piece half the time anyway. I ain’t even mad. You do your shit. You have to, because when it comes time to do your own thing, you have to know what you sound like. It’s all good. But the people who produce these games are not obligated to pay for that, or enable it, or enable you, or take any time out of their day to make sure you have their stuff for free. They don’t have to come talk to us anymore - you, or me. The action isn’t in text or still images now. Do you think there’s something about this that I don’t know?

>There was a time where I would have said not throwing your work to the lions would have represented some paucity of virtue on the part of the product; such times appear to be over.

You may like his take on the Gawker stuff too.
https://www.penny-arcade.com/news/post/2016/03/14/the-didactic-order

>Gawker is poison AIDS cancer. In the same way that the Cross is the symbol for the redemptive power of Christ’s blood, Gawker is the symbol of a metastasized social media. Gawker is Nidhogg, the dragon which gnaws at the root of the World Tree. The causes they enunciate are tarnished, just for being in their mouths.

>I don’t wish ill on anyone who works there, obviously. I mean, I guess their every action technically does sustain a legitimately evil beast of legend, some Revelations type shit, and they ruin lives for profit whenever they aren’t simply wasting your time. It’s like, oh, this other Gawker site does that. That’s not the site I read. Well, no, it’s all one site. It’s just the one site. Oh, but I only detest the mouth of the lion, where its fangs are kept; I do not detest the ear of the lion, nor its tail. But the ear is how he found your brother, and when he leapt on your sister, the tail kept him straight.

It's still absurd just how much this shit blew up, even more so when they made a follow up comic mocking the retards getting pissed and then even selling shirts with Dickwolf on them.

It's a shame that a bunch of dickwads managed to make them apologize in the end. The whole thing was a non-issue blew out of proportion.

>>
>>338031549
It's not actually. He doesn't have to data to show and prove that A supports B (they could also be completely independent) so he's resorting to using a metaphor
>>

More like they stepped up and stopped Khoo from destroying what value the brand still has before the entire company becomes just a venue to sell space at PAX.
>>
>>338029119
The best praise I've seen for it is "like Rage, but without the driving shit between shooting" which means it's probably a decent 6.5-7/10 FPS but it's not really a good Doom successor. It still suffers from the problem of people thinking "old school FPS" means Painkiller style monster arenas for some reason with no actual thought to level design, resource management, weapon/monster placement etc.

>>
>>338031615
I direct you again to the observation regarding your autism.

He was making a blog post, not testifying in a fucking court of law. Your complaints are ridiculously stupid. Your problem is that he didn't provide concrete data, but you're complaining that he used a metaphor, which is completely irrelevant to the providing of data.

A lion's ears, tail and mouth cannot exist independently.

Business part of a larger group can.

By using metaphors you're inventing scenarios that seem to be relevant, when in truth they only serve to mislead your readers by hiding how shitty your argument is when applied to actual reality
>>

The point is context: news should be accessible to the widest audience possible. If I were reading some in-depth critique or a specialized text then sure go wild, people except you to run out of words at some point, but a fucking videogame review? You keep it clear and concise because you know your audience aren't English majors. You also have to account for some possible foreign audience that aren't as accustomed to such terms as native speakers.

Not the same guy btw.

There's really nothing wrong with being unable to use some high-school level words in your writing. But instead of improving yourself or just accepting that English isn't one of your strongest qualities, you act like an asshole for no reason out of sheer childish frustration.

Sorry shit-for-brains, "ministrations" and "ostensible" aren't any more complicated than "breakfast". "More letters than I would really like" != complicated. E.g. "verisimilitude" is complicated, because its meaning can sometimes be subtle or abstract, depending on context.

What you have to understand is that REAL journalism is to VIDEO GAME journalism as a REAL chef is to a burger flipper.

These kids can't hack it in the world of actual journalism because all they REALLY want to print are opinion pieces. So, we get sites like Polygon and the like. Their writers could give no less of a shit about the games they write about, so they stretch their "reviews" to the point that it's a weak opinion piece that vaguely has something to do with a blue hedgehog.

As another foreigner who has learned English thanks to wasting his time watching tv and using the internet, I have no qualms whatsoever with him livening up his prose through the workings of a personal style :^)
Anecdotal arguments sure are helpful

The vocabulary he uses isn't even that arcane, any native speaker with a half decent education should be able to readily use most of the words that show up in this guy's articles, or at the very least recognize and understand them.

The videogame review not warranting a specific prose argument is such a non-argument. As if to imply that anyone whose hobby is playing videogames is too dumb and uneducated to understand any English text past a middle school level or too naive to savour a simple figure of speech.

As for accommodating a foreign audience; tough tits, use it as an opportunity to enrich your vocabulary. A columnist writing in English doesn't have the duty to indulge a indignant Swede who thinks he's reached the same level of proficiency as a native speaker

Why is the collective internet saying Doom is back, this is not even close to Doom. Serious Sam, Painkiller and that little indie game I forget the name of played more like Doom.

>Nonstop gory kills, required to do them for health

It has far too much modern influence, and that is ignoring the clusterfuck of Cod/Halo that makes up its multiplayer. I wasn't looking for Doom HD, but I was it to play more like Doom and less like Rage.

Obviously that is fine. Not being able to look up and down was a limtiation of the tech, not a design choice. Doom in my eyes is this.

>No preface bullshit. You spawn in level one with a weapon and you go. You don't spawn into a cutscene, then pause for two more story scenes, THEN go.
>The gameplay is simple, you find weapons, shoot things with those weapons. You don't also have on top of that cinamatic kills, granades, weapon upgrade system, suit upgrade system, fuel for what should be your melee attack (Chaingun).

The new Doom doesn't have these things. Instead it wants to be a modern shooter. With story elements, with upgrades to tempt the player into continuing, with a focus on doing quick damage and getting close for a melee kill that looks great in promotional trailers, rather than dodging while killing and relying on health packs.

It isn't Doom, those saying it is are completely kidding themselves. Play Doom (Original), Painkiller, and Serious Sam. Then play the Doom reboot. Anyone who says the reboot is closer to the original Doom than those other two games are, are liars.
