What Video Card will let me play The Witcher 3 on Ultra with

Picture potentially unrelated.

I bought The Witcher 3 on release and had a PC in progress getting ready to play it. Stuff got in the way and I had no time to finish it.

Right now I'm stilling missing the OS, an SSD, maybe some more HDDs and a monitor but the big thing I'm missing is a GPU.

Right now it seems to be a toss-up between the R3 390 and the GTX 970, with GTX 970 slightly edging ahead for me due to lower power draw and being quieter in general, though I've heard some things about R3 390 having better support for DX12.

As it stands, neither card will get me 60 fps for TW3 or so I've heard, and hairworks would have to be off in order to get over 50 fps.

I won't rule out SLI or crossfire, depending on the cost, but I'm hesitant to do them after hearing about all the minor kinks they have with certain games.

Also even though 1440p gaming sounds attractive, monitors with that as the recommended resolution are all pretty expensive, though I've heard the R9 390 is better for 1440p.

Also if I do settle for a GTX 970, I'm going to have to decide between brands. The ASUS Turbo reference card is on sale right now at about $50 CAD cheaper than the msi Gaming one, but the latter is better so I'm told.

Any advice?

Why would you get the 900 line when the 1000 line just released / is releasing?
>>
>>338027831
any recent >4ghz i7 paired with a 980 or 970. no idea why you'd buy either now that the new line will be out in the coming weeks and especially with the 1070 only being 50 bucks more expensive than the 970 while being almost twice as powerful.
>>
>>338027981
Actually that's a good point. Are we looking at a price dip for the 900 line when the 1000 releases?

Also because presumably the 1000 series will be super expensive.
>>
>>338027981
This.
Just wait 3 weeks and get the 1070.
>>
I bet a good SSD will work wonders for the game. It's open world and streams a lot of data in.
>>
>>338027831
970 can do it but this close to the next hardware cycle you may as well wait for 1xxx or a 9xxx price drop to clear out old stock.
>>
>>338028254
Alright I'll wait for the 1070. But prices up here in Canada are fucked, so I doubt we'll get as good a deal.

Witcher sux

The game is a downgraded sloppy port that runs crap on everything.

a 390 or 980ti will be more than enough and they are very cheap used $200-400

I would recommend trying out 21:9 1080p. It only needs about 33% more power than standard 1080p but the difference in experience is substantial.

I heard B&W is simul releasing with a patch that revamps a lot of the textures and optimizes it.
>>
>>338028616
Lol its not just textures its everything thats been gutted the lighting engine the effects the models everything

custom pcb/cooler cards (like msi twin frozr line or asus strix just to name a couple, there are more) are always better than reference boards. they use better vrms, mosfets, and caps and the cooling solutions are quieter and more efficient.

Hmmm you're right. 21:9 resolution looks way better than 16:9 for the Witcher 3 at least.

You can actually see around you and it doesn't feel like your character is blocking most of the important part of the screen...

>>338028761
In that case, going to have to wait a few more months after 1000 series release for the non-reference cards...
>>
you're going to spend $500 for one game?
you could give this money to a homeless person

You're almost cute.
>>
>>338027831
Ok First up, dont forget to turn off hairworks. It will fuck up you framerate and it doesnt look good.

You can max out the witcher 3 with an overclocked gtx 960 but it plays at 30fps. Source: I own one.

A Gtx 970 will be good.
>>
if youre playing on 1080p there is no noticable difference between ultra and high settings, keep that in mind
>>
>>338029043
Well presumably if it can do TW3 on ultra settings other games would run easily.

quality shitpost

GTX 1070. If you buy something else between now and its release, you're absolutely retarded.
>>
>>338029135
hairworks ran like ass at launch but when i came back for HOS they had some gigantic patch and for me hairworks ran great after that.
>>
>>338028315
Or be even more intelligent, and wait a few months for an aftermarket card instead of nvidia's showboat cards
>>
Reminder that the 1080 goes up to 87 deg
