Never, guitars are irrelevant nowadays and have no use, pointless.
>>
>>338022372
Why would you need a stupid game to learn how to play the guitar?

If learning itself isn't enjoyable enough for you then you shouldn't be playing guitar.

I've played forever and I can generally think of what sound I make, pick up the guitar and make it even if I don't play for a year or whatever. But I never practiced with a metronome so I'd probably suck if I tried to jam with someone.

Yeah right, I play guitar actively for longer than most of /v/ has been alive and I can tell you that unless you have it in you to just go to the guitar by your own lonesome playing at least two hours a day and not due to a video game, you are just wasting your time.
Just to put things in perspective, big known professionals play on average 8 hours a day.

>>338022856
This is also mandatory, you will develop bad habits that will not go away and will just frustrate you making it worse to keep motivation. Thanks to this, to this day I still have problems on getting on paper my own time signatures for my songs even though I can explain and play them without any problem.

This is not quite right. Going from a guitar perspective, thinner strings with less tension and closer to frets will allow you to be faster at the expense of sound and not being able to play on any other guitar that hasn't been modified to hell and back.
Who gets good due to perseverance on a normal instrument, will be a god on a finely tuned instrument.
Same thing as exercising with weights on your limbs.

what would tabs teach me that rocksmith wont? Also rocksmith offers a lot more than just guitarhero, there are lots of freeplay modes with a halfassed attempt at backing. If you think that's 600 hours of half assed AC/DC covers you're wrong.

It's fun for someone like me who's never held a guitar before but I already see I'll need to look for more proper lessons that will teach me to play on my own. And work my way through at least basic music theory because all this shit about scales and progressions is total voodoo to me now. And I don't want to be stuck just monkeying shit on the screen.

>>
>>338023556
Just buy a cheap squire strat or some kind of Epiphone les paul or SG. Watch some basic beginner videos on youtube, learn some simple songs and try to use what you have learned to make a simple chord progression or something. I used Rocksmith for a little but I don't really think it's anything but a little bit of fun desu. Learning a song at your own pace and then taking it to Rocksmith works well though, provided it in the game of course. Gets you playing up to speed and all that.

Don't focus on learning too hard either, just do whatever you feel like at whatever pace. One of my friends picked up guitar a little while ago and he pressured himself into learning all the scales, modes and heaps of theory.

>>
>>338023556
I was in exact same place as you and after maybe 15 hours of reading and research I made an awesome purchase that I'm happy with and some experienced players commended.

Protips:
- don't buy your first guitar new, it's a waste of money
- don't spend more than $100 on your first guitar (I paid $105 but that included small practice amp too)
- get one with Floyd Rose (or derivative) bridge, you'll curse it at first but you'll be extremely thankful a week later
- there are many cheap shit Stratocaster copies, avoid them, they're cheap shit for a reason
- after buying your new used guitar change strings right away
- 0.7 to 1.0 picks are good for starters, Tortex are great, get the Dunlop pick sampler and see what feels good for you
- pick-up config don't matter too much for starters but learn about pick-ups and use it when choosing your guitar if you know what music you want to play, I got H-H for the heavy shit but you're just as well off with S-S-S
- the one I got is Ibanez RG120, they have cheaper more entry-level models but they're built cheaper and with worse components and I wanted mine to last longer, it's worth the extra $20-40

I'm still a total beginner but that's what I learned. Good luck.

Why? Setting it up was a pain, setting intonation and action was even bigger pain, but it taught me a fuckton about the instrument and once I did it properly it holds tune rock-solid and throughout the scale.

It's only annoying to re-tune to alternative tunings for some songs but the extra 2 minutes it takes is a totally worth it tradeoff for all the benefits.

Actually you could easily sink 600 plus hours into rocksmirh. You are forgetting the mini games which all teach guitar techniques in progressively more difficult fashion. And practicing those are actually fucking god like useful. Especially the chords etc ones so you learn by muscle memory every iteratio of note and chords possible.

But you are right. Fuck playing the 'game' part of the game. That just teaches you to play songs. Which is the worst method of learning an instrument.

Cheap floating bridges are a minefield that a beginner really shouldn't step into. There are exceptions and you apparently landed a really good one, but there are also way too many bridges that will never hold the tune, the adjustments don't work half the time and actually using the whammy bar will fuck your tune and setup all over again.

Getting a guitar with a (good) floating bridge is a good idea later down the line, but as a first guitar I'd recommend a decent one with a fixed bridge. It lets you forget about the technical issues, and there's less of a risk you get a lemon to end them all, featuring endless tuning issues and hourly setup sessions

Fair point, I won't really argue with my less than 6 months experience, I'm glad I apparently got lucky.

At the same time, in my research I didn't see many cheaper guitars than mine with floating bridges and Ibanez is a good maker and RG120 a decent model. But then I did do a ton of research starting from literally zero knowledge so I think anyone with a brain could do that and avoid getting a dud.

Further to that while reading RS forums I've seen many people crying that their fixed bridge guitars sound like shit, are off by this much when fretted on 12th, sometimes to the point of RS failing to recognise the notes - and their guitars cost like 75% of mine.

Oh, I missed the part where you said what model you had. Yeah, Ibanez's cheaper models are actually really solid for the price, I started off with the RG321 and I still have it, I just need to make a new nut for it. Also for what it's worth, your guitar actually doesn't have the FR-style double locking bridge setup, but rather a more traditional Stratocaster-style bridge and those are generally harder to fuck up.

>But then I did do a ton of research starting from literally zero knowledge so I think anyone with a brain could do that and avoid getting a dud.

I knew I had to get one ever since I heard the original recording of Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Bought a cheap one and started learning from tabs and youtube videos.
Coming from guitar, it's a ridiculously ungrateful instrument. On the guitar, you can just play 4 power chords in a loop and it will sound decent, if you grab it wrong or miss a string you can just power through it and keep your rhythm. On the banjo you HAVE to learn every measure note by note (and there's a lot of notes) and play it flawlessly. If you miss a note, you'll lose your fingering and most likely stall. Also, the last string on the picking side isn't the last string on the fretting side, that takes a while to get used to.
Learning a 1:30 minute long tune takes days to weeks of practice to be able to play it at 2/3 the tempo and make it sound like actual music. Poor choice of instrument to impress chicks.
I've been playing for a year and a half and can play FMB at ~220BPM. The original is around 300BPM.

I had to change the nut on mine. Some retard filed the slots down to almost Mariana trench depth and I couldn't get the action right no matter what. But with the new one everything fell into place nice and smooth like a puzzle. I felt a bit uneasy about changing it but it turned to be a walk in a park.

And yeah, my bad for calling any generic floating bridge FR, I guess that's a bad habit I picked from reading some forums.
