I met this person in a game of unranked dota one time and added them after the game because their name was some lyrics from a band I liked. Became good friends, duo queued some more dota, had fun times. One day they ask if I want to play Natural Selection 2 with them and I had literally no clue what it was but figured I'd give it a shot. Picked up a copy, hopped in game and they started teaching me the basics. I was so awful at it and the first 20 or so games we played they basically carried my deadweight ass because I had never really played anything like it.
One day I asked them on a whim if they wanted to hang out in Mumble partly because I was curious about who they were and partly because NS2 is really a whole lot easier if you have voice comms. I give them my server address and wait for them to join. Hear the connect noise and then I hear some canadian chick's voice. Played it cool even though I was pretty shocked and we became partners in crime after that. She wasn't as good at most of the games we played as I was but I never could git gud at NS2 so she would always give me shit for letting a girl be better at a game than I was.inb4 >trapshe eventually asked to friend me on Facebook and we've hung out a handful of times in person. I knew a woman who would easily beat anybody on /v/ at Quake 3 Arena, or an arcade version of Street Fighter 2 (she owns a cabinet of that). When I told her my first RTS was Command & Conquer she called me a casual baby. She was a solid pilot in Battlefield and OFP/ArmA games too.
She was of course a rarity, but I've known several other confirmed females who were decent at games, even FPS and RTS (one was a beast at AoE, was her favorite game). Often times the niche they seem to excel at in shooters is either piloting or being a sniper. The current "token female" in my current social group doesn't really play video games, but she's a legitimate competitor in board, card, and miniature games.
My age range is people who are currently 30-40 years olds, so I can't say much for the demographics of the younger people after the age of the "geek is chic" bullshit.

Only games I've ever seen good girls in are puzzle games (only actual smart ones, which is extremely rare) and MMOs. Outside of a few exceptions.
I used to MMO hop with a group of people and there was a woman who would usually go along with us in whatever game. I was usually tanking, the other 2 guys liked DPS and she usually healed, of course. She was a solid tank as well any time we switched roles. However as a healer she was pretty much unstoppable in whatever game. Be it PvP or PvE she turned every MMO in to easy mode.
She was pretty good at fast twitch shooters too which was what shocked me. Watching most women play an FPS makes it look like they can barely comprehend what's happening.
However, I still to this day believe it was because when she was a kid she was actually an autistic robot. Her personality wasn't really that of a "woman".

Personally, I'm just not very good at multiplayer/competitive games. Growing up, my parents let me have like 1-2 video games a year, so I picked things that lasted a really long time: RPGs.

I used to play a lot on L4D2 25 Man expert servers, where the zombies were harder to kill, and weapons were dropped after killing specials which were difficult to kill. It was fun for a challenge and I clocked around 35 days on the server.
In that time I met several girl gamers on that server and they were all pretty good. They ranged from players in the top 10 who had the most time, points and skill to a random assortment in the top 100's. I was around rank 40 when I quit playing, but several of the girls I knew were around rank 3, 10, 20 and so on.
Whenever they would play, they would usually top the frag list and find the best weapons and such. I was friends with a couple of them and I still consider a lot of them to be really lucky with their drops. I'd usually be behind helping up the newbies who would usually die easily so we don't end up with a team of 7 people on a 25 man server.
