Saskia, Roche, Iorverth(got mentioned twice but that's it), Letho. By the the time of the third game they all became minor characters. Most of the major characters from the third game outside of the expansion are all from the books and they literally reused plot lines but put a slightly different paint of coat on. Now they did come up with some great original stuff such as Bloody Baron plot line and HoS but they also repeated the plot lines from the books but put a little different spin on them. Now this is bullshit. I've played the three big psx games (VII, VIII and IX) and it's basically pretty simple. Counterpart elemental magic, resistances and attack. That's it. Tactics my ass. You just get to decide if attacking with magic or melee, and if attacking with magic which one is better. You don't need to think at all anon, unless you are facing a secret boss like the rubi weapon in VII or the omega weapon in VIII or Ozma in IX, which are like the 1% of the hard battles in each game. I still remember when i read a guide and reading about how to defeat a boss with bio magic. I didn't got that shit learned at the time and ended up winning anyway.

Turn base is fun but only on the right setting. Attacking on turns with your chars in one line and the enemies in the other reduces the tactics factor by a lot, that's why people keep saying the best Final Fantasy game is Tactics, because you move the characters in position and do more thinking.

It is bad because it limits the possibilities by keeping characters static. I bet your ass that was because hardware-software limitations back then. It's just adding difficulty when it should't be difficult, for example being able to spread your party because some big shit is coming. But no, your chars are tied in line, or you do have resistances or you are fucked.
Why do you think they tried to add more freedom in FFXII? they realized it was time to move on a bit and from there each final fantasy to date has a more free movement on characters as an intention to add more tactics into it, though it's still crap.
