You'll probably go into 1 about as confused as you would be if you decided to jump straight into 2, and I say this as a person who didn't even know these were based off of books. I say this because 1's super dated and ridiculously easy once you know to read monster entries and use group-style nonstop.
Witcher 2 references almost nothing from the first game, while 3 has callbacks to both 1 and 2.
All games have a backwards learning curve. In all the games so far, the first boss has been the only boss I've consistently died to repeatedly, because experience from sidequests quickly make stuff get easy later on.

this is correct, the combat gets gradually less janky the further you get on in the series. The writing is consistently pretty good, though 1 feels more 'storybookish' than either of the later entries despite all three focusing mainly on medieval politics and Geralt losing something that drives him on a wacky adventure.
If you start on 2, be careful about specializing in alchemy because potions can only be drank when you meditate. This can be an issue if you want to talk to a guy you want to beat the crap out of for 10 minutes and your potions also only last for 10 minutes.

The only unnatural part of Geralt's look post W2 are his witcher eyes, which even then are just cat eye irises. Good news, there's basically nothing that's the same. TW3 has actual combat, proper pacing and a menu system that makes sense and the only thing that's really the same is the setting and the characters.
TW2 also changed things pretty substantially, but it's not as good as TW3 in terms of mechanics or story so you might want to give that one a pass.
I never played one, bought two off steam when it was on sale and played a grand total of 10 minutes before I realised it just wasn't for me. It was neither amazing or horrible. Just, eh.

Funny enough, the Swamp itself is the least of my issues with the game. The act itself is just a slog. I enjoyed playing Scooby Doo in the village, but as soon as I entered Vizima proper, I just stopped caring about everything for some reason or another. The city itself just feels off for some reason. It's jank. I don't mind jank, but it's just some specific sort of jank that rubs my own personal tastes the wrong way.
As much as I'd love to love the Witcher, the second act is a hard pill to swallow. The swamp itself is fine, it's just everything that goes on around the swamp that bores me to tears. Kind of hilarious how strong the enemies were, though, when I had to save those prostitutes.
