How does Nightmare or whatever the hardest difficulty that unlocks after beating stack up? More demons? I want more demons so i can run and gun during the arena sections for longer.
I also thought the Cyberdemon and Mastermind boss fights were some of the best FPS boss fights I've ever played. Nice to be kept on my toes with the fights changing as they go.

Nightmare is basically set up so you almost go down in two hits. Imps can drain about 45 armor per shot, health they do more. Health and armor drops on the field give you less (basic health and armor shards only give +1 per each)
Otherwise, so far seems that demon count and weapon damage is the same.
Ultra-Nightmare is basically Nightmare, just you only have one life.

Like I kind of wish every level was designed like Foundry, but I do love how vertical and set up the combat arenas are for keeping your momentum up.
Plus, while yes the demons in this do not fill their classic roles (ie mancubus being big fucking deniers), they all do fill roles in some way, shape, or form (ie Hell Razers being the new deniers, Cyber-Mancubus being the new zone deniers, Hell Knights being the new pinkies/rushers, etc)

Nah, I'm a purist too. Only mod I've ever tried was Demonsteele, but even then that was for the different gameplay style. I wasn't a fan of Brutal Doom.
I take this new Doom as an attempt to retain the classic style of momentum, but some modern concessions in terms of upgrade systems, some basic narrative drive, and the level design except for two or three levels basically being hallways to combat arenas (ie the Serious Sam and Shadow Warrior 2013 school of level design).
Basically, we aren't gonna get a Doom completely in the style of the classics considering that they wouldn't jive with modern audiences, and even Rise of the Triad 2013 showed the flaws in a 1:1 remake of an old school FPS (as fun as it was). Doom 2016 has its flaws, but it is a decent and competent shooter.

Doom 1, 2, 64, Final Doom and PSX Doom are all fucking badass. I suggest starting with doom 1 then go onto 64 or 2. 64 is more atmospheric and has a different yet also good feel to it. All doom games that aren't doom 3, doom 2016 and doom RPG have the same gameplay mechanics, only weapons and enemies and level design changes.

Just because it has two paths and one is a dead end with a "secret" doesn't make it not linear. The last 3 levels are literally straight lines.
I liked the game alot but the game was pretty god damn linear if you aren't looking for secrets. Only a few areas have multiple paths and really only Argent base/Argent base destroyed were open maps.
The one thing its lacking that Doom1/2 have over it massive are level pathings. There are so many different ways you can play the original/community wad levels that have different timings/personality to them. But in D44M its basically just a straight line with side secrets. No way to do something later in the level first etc etc.

I haven't seen much of DOOM, and I had originally dismissed it but this video was really good at changing my mind. It looks FAST, even with all the beatdown animations that the runner uses. I do have to say that the game look very platformer-y, especially when it came to finding secrets. It also wasn't as rip-and-tear as I was hoping, it's more like punch-and-punch-again. Guns looked nice, but I'm not too big on the weapon upgrades. It was nice in the original Doom to find a weapon and see how different and unique it was from other weapons, in this it's more like "Here's the base, and now make it shoot rockets or something." It's neat, but feels weird I think. I was also getting some major RAGE vibes. Enemy count could be higher, and I wish they shot more.

Every time you die, it's a result of you making an actual mistake that could have been easily avoided by thinking faster and planning better, dying because you didn't pull out the right weapon at the right time to deal with the right enemies in the right order while maintaining spacial awareness so you can keep up your momentum avoiding damage. If you died because a hell knight kicked an explosive barrel into your face, you should have shot the barrel a second earlier to damage the hell knight. If you were standing next to the barrel, you should have moved elsewhere earlier. 100% planning and skill and reactions and decision making, no bullshit.
Also nightmare wasn't locked at the start, it was just in red text. Ultranightmare has the lock icon next to it, nightmare does not.

I feel like the UAC messing with Hell and using it for their own ends sort of ruined it a bit. There's no way humans should have that sort of power, we just shouldn't. It sort of makes the way Hell is depicted in DOOM sort of stumble a little, I think. Then again, I suppose its one of those instances where I could just say, "I would have done it differently" and move on.
I do love the design of Hell though. I've always loved how they always include things like alters, candles, things like that. The idea of demonic servants or even the demons themselves setting those things up, lighting candles, painting symbols on walls with blood; I absolutely love that imagery. The idea that Hell is its own society is neat, to me.

Original Doom games have a modding community that will probably continue making stuff for it till the heat death of the universe, Doom 3 was a game that was WAY ahead of its time even if it altered the basic Doom gameplay in a way people didn't like and Doom 4 is probably one of the best FPS to come out in years and maintain the Doom aesthetic while doing its own thing.

This game had no business being this fucking good. Just finished Argent Facility and it almost brought nostalgic tears to my eyes the moment I saw the first Baron of Hell raping the lesser demons. It's the most fun I've had on a FPS since probably Painkiller. Too bad fucking casual critics are panning it and there probably won't ever be a DOOM 2 that fixes the multiplayer bullshit.
