When Bloodborne came out, I was ass deep in debts, recently lost a job, and every penny that I had saved went to helping pay the bills.

I'm a huge Souls fan, so I was pretty depressed that I couldn't afford a PS4 to play it. I used to read negative impressions of the game, and held on to them to make myself believe I wasn't missing anything.

>the game is too short
>it's all spammy action, it's not an RPG
>the framerate sucks
>low amount of weapons

That shit kept me sane as I was going trhough crippling depression.

Anyway, earlier this year I got a job and last month I got a PS4 and played Bloodborne.

It's the greatest game of all time.

I was trying to create an illusion that this game sucked so I wouldn't feel like I was missing anything. But I did, I missed a fuckton in the past year.

To whoever still hasn't played this game, do it. No excuses, find a way. It's the best game ever made.

Good for you. I recently played through it for the first time as well and love it.

I have to say that it is a bit too easy though. Except the DLC there isn't really any hard boss in the game.

It's a great game. I think I personally prefered Dark Souls 1 because of it's interconnecting world. But I think the atmosphere topped that of DeS in a lot of it's areas, Although ToL is still numero uno for atmosphere and the story was the best of the lot.

I hear this a lot. I found BB easier as well. The speed dodging, extreme stam regen and 20 quick sip vials made it a cakewalk. The only enemies in the game that took concentration were the other Hunters. Especially that Katana cunt in the church for Eileen's quest.

Maybe I'm bias because I like flashy, transforming weapons (Switch Axe for life), but even the base game had cool weapons to me. Aside from the lore, which is right up my alley, the weapons are the second reason I'd even consider buying the game.

>>337972369
>>337972398
That's what I thought. Dark Souls has "more" weapons, but half of them tend to be useless, straight clones, or simply less efficient than the alternatives. WE NEED MORE STRAIGHT SWORDS.
>>
>>337972283
Sometimes I wish from would also add weapons to the base game when they release the DLC. New weapons in the DLC are great, but some of them are just so hard to get if you aren't really that good, that they only really play a role if you do NG+

Running through all the shit and grabbing Amygdalan Arm the moment you can access the DLC is fucking fun though

It's fantastic for the RPG part though. My favorite axe is the Dragonslayer Crescent Axe. It's not the best weapon of the game but it just looks perfect for what I want my character to wield. Of course, there are even more axes to choose from if I didn't happen to like this one aesthetically.

So yeah, there are tons of "more of the same" weapons, but that just makes it so there's a perfect weapon for every aspie roleplayer out there.

nah, the main games content is fairly sub standard, with the areas after amelia being both tedious and boring, and never really reaching their full scope of potential.

Nightmare of mensis in particular, is possibly the worst example, it felt like such a let down that they wasted such a perfect opportunity to be creative on a level that felt like more bland victorian garbage, with a few eldritch influences like the eyes and brain.

I was heavily disappointed with the bosses as well, rom, witches of hemwick, the one reborn, celestial emissary and micolash in particular are some of the worst in the entire series. Other than gehrman, the game had a really weak ending as well, it felt underdeveloped how you fought wet nurse at the end of mensis, a boss who seemed far too shit to be a potentially final/penultimate boss, and then you are suddenly at the end potentially, moon presence itself seemed relatively unrealised, I disliked how the fight itself played out like a weird version of the beasts, it felt uncreative after the glorious cutscene.

The online functionality was limited by the invasion areas being such an obvious rushed design choice, they shouldn't have focussed the nightmare areas being far and above the best zone to invade when the other areas in the game were both visually more interesting, and more satisfying to mess around in.

The bell maiden system is absolutely atrocious, it made invading both incredibly frustrating in areas, and frustrating in terms of the actual in game experience, with low health and ganking.

I absolutely despised the chalice dungeon content, the tight hallways and heavy focus on gank encounter design ruined any fun, although the same can be said about a lot of bloodborne when it comes to the mindless "let's put lots of enemies in a short space because why not lel", in addition chalice dungeons seemed far more indicative of wasted content, and it seemed like through some of the lore they were hyping up a genuine labyrinthe experience that they just didn't have time to finish.

I also felt a further sour note after first playing the dlc, the heavy focus on the clocktower just reminded me of how heavy it was a feature and motif in not only some of bloodborne's in game content, but also a large portion of the marketing material, that and the larger story implications made it fairly obvious to me it was meant to be in the original game.

The nature of the nightmare itself was far more interesting, especially fishing hamlet, than anything in bloodborne's main game in terms of "eldritch/lovecraft" potential, where ebrietas and the various brain themes in mensis and frontier really consist of the main explicit content, Bloodborne in general though never really expanded upon this, there was never a moment I felt truly contrasted with the previous tonality of the game in a way which felt overtly eldritch apart from the encounter with rom and moon presence, both of which were very short sequences.

By large I felt a certain dissonance with the people who claim that the "twist" is a notable point by which bloodborne grips the player.

Rather for me, I only felt the game got heavily worse after cathedral ward, where the great sense of world cohesion was somewhat lost for various reasons, and the level and encounter design took a turn for the worst, the bosses in general, shadows of yharnam, hemwick witches, rom, the one reborn, amygdala, micolash and wet nurse felt both less well designed in terms of sheer quality, as well as general bad gameplay

That's not to say there weren't good bosses in bloodborne, but the quality consistency of the game was heavily frontloaded.

So central yharnam, gascoigne, cleric beast, cathedral ward, vicar amelia, old yharnam and blood starved beast both left a consistent and memorable impression, as well as giving me unique and well designed bosses in a good and condensed pace, in addition I felt the twisting level design was at it's peak here with the more layered and thick atmosphere the city scape gave off, whereas in later areas it felt more contrived as a result of the sparser environments, the nightmare areas in particular being examples of this, it limited the "natural" feeling I had with the world.

Ebrietas and Logarius remain late game standout points, they were both unique bosses that I felt utilised their potential well, but there was a minor issue I had with health bloat, but that was probably a result of my level at the time, although it was still a consistent issue I had throughout bloodborne, but not too much of a gripe.

The DLC felt refreshing, but like I said, also a bit sour, to start, one of the bosses, Laurence felt like a massive waste, such a central character, so much potential, and they instead throw tons of bad game design on him:

>Ridiculously bloated health pool
>Large Aoe's on a large portion of his attacks unneccesarily past phase 2
>phase 3 is largely a game of luck depending on whether his swipe/aoe's get out of rhythm with the player, or end up with the player stuck near a wall

Horrible, horrible boss, the reskin nature of his appearance didn't help either.

Living failures were one of my favourite bosses design wise, the large plant in the middle, the huge meteor like strikes and music change, but still, the rest of the fight was rather limp.

Orphan and Ludwig were good, but I felt similar to ludwig orphan had far too much health, and ludwig had several attacks in his first phase that had needless delays, the jumps in particular.
>>
>>337978057
I suppose but that's being a tad hypersensitive. We can point out the flaws in things we love. Dark Souls is my favorite video game of all time and I can acknowledge shit like the reusing of the Asylum Demon etc.
>>
Is this as linear as Dark Souls 3?
>>
>>337978153
Further to my point on the quality consistency, the later game areas felt less realised, byrgenwerth in particular was hardly even there for such a central plot area, which was disappointing in retrospect and future playthroughs, although on the first run through, it didn't really resonate with me as much.

Upper Cathedral ward was painfully short, with the one main room itself full of "throw enemies in the area you've already played against and see what happens" tier encounters

Castle Cainhurst similarly, for such a large and domineering entrance, feels short and underdeveloped, an area that could have easily used another side route to the lower reaches, and another boss. The enemy design itself wasn't particularly great either, the gargoyles had a tendency to overuse their grab attacks, and the ghosts were kind of pointless.

Nightmare frontier is virtually useless in retrospect, the runes you get there aren't really useful.

Nightmare of mensis has better level design in the first half, but the bosses and the second half feel less developed.

Yahar'gul itself shares the good level and world design of bloodborne's first half, but the upper reaches feature awful encounters with the buff/respawning enemies by way of bell maidens, and the three hunter encounter in the lower area.

I only wrote all this out because I can't understand why anyone would think Bloodborne is perfect, not because it's their favourite game of all time.

Bloodborne was pretty amazing and it left an awesome after "taste" in the mouth. I remember every single awesome new area and I have fond memories of my characters, defined by their gear, items and characteristics

BUT.... It's not a ten. They could have done much much more with this game, here's my list on how to amplify an already awesome game:

>more npcs. Just straight up more stories, more subtle, well crafted sub-plots like the music box for gascoigne or the beast guy in the window.
>More inspiration and unique elements in some levels. The berserk-like dark and dead design can be fun to look at but gets old sometimes.
>Just go all out on spooky shit. Fuck genres, just horror my shit up like in the upper cathedral ward
>More cutscenes of NPCS doing bloodborney things.

>World is filled with inspired NPCS and sidequests with good writing. Filled means 2 NPCS per level
>World has fully explored themes. If you make a bloodborney-looking level, go in and open up a portal to a horror dimension.
>It makes MINIMAL use of meme souls maps like swamps and le final castle meme

>More inspiration and unique elements in some levels.
