There used to be a billion doujins posted with this game.

Hero - Boomerang
Angelo - Staff
Jessica - Fisticuffs
Yangus - Axes

Best use of skills.

Faggot.

The game is the shit easy in the top 10 best
PS2 games and one of the best Dragon Quest
games. Thankfully Dragon Quest XI is looking
pretty good.

This. Swords/Spears and Courage are the way to go.
>>
>>337956174
It's the best Dragon Quest game that's released for a long time, mostly because of Japan's focus on mobile games so the series hasn't had a good high budget game since 8.
>>
>>337956174

First RPG I found so boring that I quit midway through because I simply did not give a fuck about what was going on. Shitty characters, shitty plot.
>>
>>337957528

Boomerangs are good for hitting all the enemies at once.

Hero - Swords/Courage
Yangus - Axes/Humanity
Jessica - Staves/Whip (early game)
Angelo - Swords/Staves
>>
One of my absolute favorite games. Loved it.

DQXI looks high budgeted(PS4 version). Looks good so far from what I seen with trailers and such.

I did like though every party member used 3 different weapons(although 4 with Yangus and Jessica somewhat)

Hero used swords, boomerangs, and polearms(spears/lances).
Yangus used clubs, hammers, axes, and scythes.
Jessica used whips, staves, knives, and swords(get her knives stat to 50 and she starts using swords)
Anglo used swords(mostly rapiers), staves, and bows.

Wish more DQ games did this formula(hopefully with XI).

I also did like though seeing Hero and Angelo going Super Saiyan when they hit 100+ tension. That was a neat touch. Guess Toriyama wanted to add some DBZ into the game during development.

It is my favorite game of all time. The only negative I had for the game was the thing most people love about the game; the heavy British dialects and voice acting that weren't part of the original Japanese version. I am hoping the 3DS game has a better translation, retains the ability to turn voices off or has dual audio.

Outside of these two issues, it is by far the best game I have ever played. And not getting Dragon Quest X, a game heavily inspired by Dragon Quest VIII, all the more rage educing. The idea of getting an MMO version of Dragon Quest VIII would have been the only MMO I ever wanted. And I probably would have spent 10 years playing it.

I never had that problem because I prefer some of her other costumes. And when the 3DS version comes out, all clothes will change her appearance. So I'm going to enjoy changing her look every 5 hours or so.

My favorite outfit for her is her original dress. But it becomes useless shortly after you leave Alexandria
>>
This is one of the best looking games with an emulator.
Probably the most remarkable thing about VIII.
>>
>>337959207

I wish the remake of Dragon Quest VII would have incorperated the skill system from DQVIII. The major advantage to the skill system wasn't just about making things easier. It just works better for a story driven game than classes do.

Well, except for those idiots who only spam attack and heal. Then get their teeth kicked in by Dhoulmagus and grind 10 levels just to get multiheal. But that's just an example of idiots not trying to use skills.

It doesn't make things easier if you're playing the game blind and are just putting points into skills relatively evenly.

That's the disadvantage to the skill system.

Will you be using Red and/or Morrie in the 3DS version?

Red: uses Knives (Swords), Whips, Fans. Unique skill is Acquisitiveness which is an advanced version of Yangus' Humanity.
Morrie: uses Claws, Boomerangs and Hammers.

I don't really know anything about his unique skill because nobody bothered to write any guides.
>>
>>337963875
They could've left it untouched and get a CERO B rating. Game is gonna be rated T anyway here in the US.

I bet they might pull a Director's Cut version for the US like they did with the original VIII on PS2.
>>
>>337964174

Even playing your first time, its obvious that spreading points over all four skills is a bad idea. But even if you did, they give you enough points. You could still beat the game if you put 50 points into every skill.

>They could've left it untouched and get a CERO B rating.
They could have. But Every DQ game before has been rated CERO A. Including the original release of Dragon Quest VIII. The problem isn't the developers so much as the people rating the games going crazy.

>Game is gonna be rated T anyway here in the US.
And they might retain the original costumes in the western release. There have been plenty of Dragon Quest games released in the west with new or altered content than the Japanese version. Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 being a prime example of this. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
>>
>>337964413
also some stuff on Red:

>accelerate at 3 Acquisitiveness, boosts party agility (and also evasion by proxy) by 100%
>gains additional gold after battle at 7 Acq.
>can steal items from monsters she kills at 12 Acq
>upgrades the above two at 52 and 66 Acq respectively
>Fullheal at 37
>Basically gets Golden Oldies at 100

I kind of wish she wasn't another sword user, instead, staying with knives exclusively and making knives BETTER, and instead of whips, she would use flails since she gives hers to Yangus in the original game.

basically her and Morrie recycle some other character's stuff while having one unique weapon (Red has Fans, Morrie has Claws)
>>
>>337964785
>its obvious that spreading points over all four skills is a bad idea.
The game never tells you it is. If you're playing it blind, how are you supposed to know that an ability that would help you tremendously on a boss is unavailable to you just because you didn't know you needed to dump more points into a specific stat?

When I first played DQ8 when it came out, I told myself I'd play it blind, and I did. I got all the way to the Empyrea boss fight and got my shit wrecked because I ran out of MP. The biggest problem Dragon Quest VIII has is that you can't buy anything that restores your MP until super late into the game for some reason, but the skill point system didn't help matters either. Maybe if I had known I needed to distribute skill points unevenly, it wouldn't have had a problem with Empyrea. I emulated and beat the game last year since I knew more about the game and focused on certain skills.
>>
>>337956538
Hero - Sword
Angelo - Bow
Jessica - Staff
Yangus - Axe
>>
>>337964413

I'll use Red and Morrie the first play-through just because they're new. Don't know about after that. Depends on how they play. I always thought Jessica wasn't as good as Hero/Yangus/Angelo. Gets most of her best skills near the end of the game and doesn't have healing spells. If Red or Morrie has skills that make up for her shortcomings, I will use them over Jessica.

Still don't know how it'll work though, since Jessica has that one part of the story where she has to be on your team. Guess they'll pull a Dragon Quest VII and force her to join you for one story arc.
>>
>>337965698
if I remember Red basically joins you after captain Crow, while Morrie, you have to pretty much win all the monster arena's rank S stuff to join.

I could be wrong.

>If you're playing it blind, how are you supposed to know that an ability that would help you tremendously on a boss is unavailable to you just because you didn't know you needed to dump more points into a specific stat?
Most bosses have multiple ways to beat them. About the only skill I consider to be absolutely essential is sarcastic snigger against Captain Crow. And even then, you can still beat him without lowering tension by focusing on healing spells, buff spells or damage. Captain Crow can also be put to sleep amazingly enough.

So basically, I can't think of a single boss in the game which requires you to have certain skills. Now will putting 50 points into every skill make the game harder? Of course it will. But that's kind of what a second play-through is for. Min/Maxing stats and finding the best skills to focus on.

The first time I played Dragon Quest VIII, I maxed Boomerangs on the Hero, Sythes on Yangus, Bow on Angelo and Knives on Jessica. I unintentionally did everything possible to make the game harder on myself. But I not only beat the game, I even beat the Dragovian Lord with that setup.

Shit Morrie gets (his unique is "Passion"):
Dual Cutter at 100 Boomerang (2 hits for x1.2 damage to all enemies)
Hand of God at 100 Claw (ignores defense but fails against metal slimes)
Morrie Yell at 30 Passion (Buffs a target's tension by 1/2 levels)
High Tension at 68 passion (Buffs self's tension by 2 levels)
Call team at 100 Passion (calls down a random monster which does a different skill):

Mazin (super golem): Level x 4-5.6 damage to one enemy
Sabercat swarm: 8 Hits of Level x 0.8 to a group of enemies
Slime swarm: Omniheal on party

Its a much smaller change than adding full voice acting and orchestrated music. Like they did for the original western release on PS2. Is it likely? Probably not. But its perfectly possible for them to do if they expect a Teen rating.

Who cares.
Here's something worth caring about though.

>Twin dragon lash (23 whip skill) nerfed to do only 90% damage per hit (180%, if both strikes hit), instead of 150% (300%, if both strikes hit)
>Sudden Death (100 knives skill) now does 180% damage, instead of 150%; can proc off of (uber) falcon blade to hit twice. Instant-kill rate boosted a bit.
>Helm splitter (6 axe skill) drops defense by 25% instead of 50%
>Oomph doubles attack instead of 1.8 times
Don't believe me?

Nigga even if you're playing smart Dhoulmagus is still gonna kick your teeth in without Multiheal. Only time I ever beat him in one go (and not dying after the first form then starting again right at the 2nd form) was on like my third playthrough when I knew exactly what to expect and didn't spend points on any useless shit.

Most people who complain about needing to grind to defeat Dhoulmagus have been avoiding any exploration off the roads. And literally ran or zoomed to every story event. So while its normal to be around level 35 when you encounter Dhoulmagus, these people are around level 27-30. I even heard one guy who claimed he was level 25 when he fought Dhoulmagus. No idea how he got through the Dark Ruins to get to him though, unless he ran from every battle.

Spells like Bang/Boom don't work on Undead type enemies. When you reach the Dark Ruins, all the zombies group together. So Woosh is actually the most efficient skill to use on them.

It also has a better cost/power ratio than Bang and Boom do. Basically, I use Woosh in most mob fights, unless I encounter 3-4 groups where I use Boom.

Dragon Quest is really lenient when it comes to experimentation in battle. You can usually waste 1-2 rounds trying a skill and learning what type of enemy it is. Unlike Final Fantasy where if you use the wrong skill, the boss has auto counter attack for 9999 damage.

What I do know is that since DQ8's port has instant alchemy face it, the original alchemy system sucked dick and didn't really promote its use for alchemizing consumables, the upgraded alchemy pot from the original game which you can pick from the list of options from the final post-game dungeon is gone.

Instead it's replaced with an option that unlocks another dungeon.

Okay.

Why were the DQVI characters so bad?

They weren't that bad.

I didn't mind the original Alchemy system. I think a better way to handle it would have been that every time you make an item, its cooking time was reduced by 50%. This means eventually you would get to a point where you could cook strong medicines instantly, but something like the Divine Bustier (which you can only make one of) would still take 30 minutes to cook. It would have also removed the need for a pot that cooked things instantly.

The time when the Alechemy Pot sucked was in Dragon Quest IX. When they expected you to not only combine three items, but different quantities of those items. Its stupid that you have to wait weeks or even months to find 10 orichalcum, 99 spider webs and an old sword.

Glass cannons. They get their shit wrecked in the arena, especially if they merge.
Nohi, Cybot, Hackzilla is the goat team.

They weren't bad. They just didn't have much of a role in the story. Each one has one major event and one minor event. So a game like Dragon Quest IV or VIII, where every character has far more ties to the story, seems better by comparison.

Except Nevan who is literally only there to help you get the ship. Then is more pointless than Yamcha in Dragon Ball.

>and doesn't have healing spells
Not like that matters much when you have reusable items
>>
>>337970336
the worst thing about IX's alchemy pot was certain, super rare items (Alchemiracles) had like a 5% chance of being created over the original recipe (Such as the Hypernova sword over the Supernova sword) however the game saves when you do the alchemy meaning you can't savescum to get it.

Jessica gets like every party buff besides Kabuff though
Once you hit the point in the game where Twin Dragon Lash stops raping everything sideways, that's her role, buff spamming

Jessica and Angelo were my Timbrel of Tension sluts
>>
Who's the best hero?
>>
>>337971201

I understand the point of the game is that Angelo uses defensive magic and Jessica uses offensive magic. Its much like how in Dragon Quest V, your son learns all the defensive spells and your daughter learns all the offensive spells. I also realize that the hero, with his broken 'spells cost 50% less' skill, becomes the best spellcaster in the game.

Still, the one time you actually really need two healers is in the Dark Ruins and fighting Dhoulmagus. And you're forced to use Hero and Angelo as healers. When Hero would be doing better casting buffs and dealing damage.

At that point Hero's damage usually hasn't blown past Yangus and Jessica yet, at least not in my experience. The three are pretty close to even around that part of the game.

A solid 9/10, and it ain't even my favourite DQ.

Hero - Spear/Sword
Angelo - Bow
Jessica - Whip
Yangus - Axes and my undying love.

Does anyone know if the 3DS version made Clubs or Scythes less shitty for Yangus?
>>
