I cannot understand Winston. He has to get so close before his electric arc actually connects. Is it supposed to lock on to anyone in reach? If so, it still sucks because 2v1 at close range is a death sentence no matter what your health.

The lightning gun locks onto anyone within a cone in front of him. Genji, Soldier, Zenyatta, Mercy and Widow all melt to him.
Winston is all about hit and run attacks. He's about jumping over their frontline and getting a pick off a healer or weak enemy, then jumping back. You have to be careful where you land - land on a Mcree or Reaper and you've fucked up.
If you play Winston correctly you can throw your enemy formation into chaos and weaken key targets for your DPS to pick off.
Winston is amazing and a blast to play. He's simple, but to play him well requires nuance and situational awareness.

Junkrat and pharah and probably a few others do what winston does better(jumping in/out while murdering key targets). And he's got the worst ult in the game. And his shield is garbage compared to a reinhardt or even zarya.

I haven't really played Winston properly, so I won't agree or disagree with you. However, I'll grant you that his shield is pretty garb. If we have Reinhardt running around with a mobile shield that's more useful, I don't see why Winston's shield can't get a solid buff.

Sorry but Luminosity proved this lame 2/2/2 memestrat is beatable when Seagull switched to Bastion.
Also 2/2/2 was only used on KOTH maps like Lijiang.
