And Nintendo hasn't always been known for gimmicks. They've tried a few crazy ideas, sure, but their strong suit always used to be making great games. Somewhere along the line, they stopped doing that, and just started focusing on gimmicks. Some solid games were actually made WORSE by shoehorning the gimmick in (SFZ is a great example of this).
If Nintendo went 3rd party, they wouldn't have any gimmicks to force. They'd have to rely on making innovative games again by virtue of the gameplay being innovative, and not the same old gameplay just with some new bullshit input scheme
Just because something is new doesn't make it good. They could come out with a buttplug that you squeeze to make Mario jump for instance. New idea, something no one has done before, but just because it's new doesn't mean it's good. The analog stick is a great example of an innovation that actually improved gaming and didn't just set it back for the sake of novelty.
