I think the pattern is simple. I figured it out before I sold my Wii U that was all caked in dust whenever I'd look at it.
Sony owners have a huge plethora of games to choose from. So you have your dudebros, your weebs, your fightan fags, your CoDfags, the whole shebang make up the constituency of the Sony fanbase. Whereas Nintendo fans literally get like 2 game each year, so every Wii U owner buys the two games that come out. So those two games sell very well because they're all Wii U owners have, whereas the massive Sony fanbase ends up buying millions of all kinds of games.
I sold my Wii U about a year ago, used the money I got from that father of two elementary school children to pre-order Street Fighter V, MGSV and Bloodborne. I haven't seen a single Wii U game I want to buy come out since Smash (massive disappointment), Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 were the only good games on the console. And they were all 3rd party games. Still play SFV on the regs, not missing floaty Smash or babbymode Mario games.

SF will always be more of the same. It will add some complexities here and there to expand the skill ceilings (or completely fuck them up), but it's SF. SF2 is arguably still the peak of the series.
Nintendo, as much as every loves to shit on them, expands their IPs in addition to pumping out sequels. That's what Pokken Tournament is; it's an expansion on the pokemon franchise that let's you do a pokemon battle in a fresh way. Yet, people are shocked when it's better received than a SF sequel. Capcom said the game sold 1.4 million total. Steamspy numbers are at like 150k or something. That means the PS4 version sold at about 1.25 million. However, the sales in japan and america looked really low, which means nearly every SFV PS4 sale was digital. Hence the very important "retail" word here.
