Stellaris has been out for a week now. What do you guys think of it?

I think it's an okay game right now, potential is there but it's lacking basic features

>Construction ships can't auto build
>Science ships can't auto survey
>Can't upgrade every single building on a planet
>Too much irrelevant micromanaging in early game
>No map modes
>Religion isn't really important
>Corvettes are OP
>No way to see the casualties in a battle
>Blobbing is easy because the AI isn't smart enough to band together to stop the player
>Mid-late game is pretty boring because of the snowball effect
>Food doesn't do anything
>No slavery
>What happens to your leaders has almost zero impact on the game
>Your type of government doesn't really mean anything
>Your empire will always have perfect internal stability
>>
>>337841238
>No slavery

I meant, "no slave trade"
>>
Game is only good with human multiplayer.

>Stellaris has been out for a week now. What do you guys think of it?
No endgame content. Stellaris has the exact same problem as Endless Space; once the initial exploration phase wears off and borders get set up you might as well throw all you think about your race out of the window because there's nothing to do in the game apart from military conquest, even if you're playing a xenophile pacifist. This wouldn't be so bad if the game had actual diplomacy and domestic politics that weren't shallow as fuck.

Militaristic expansion itself is extremely slow due to limits of warscore system, not to mention integration of whole empires takes 50 fucking in-game years and you can only do it to one empire at a time even if you had extra influence to spare. After the exploration phase is over and you've become a local major power (all your neighbors are Inferior / Pathetic and possibly vassalized) most of your game time will be spent doing nothing but inflating your deathstack and waiting for researches to complete, hoping that at some point a galactic crisis triggers so there's actually something to do.

Compared to previous Paradox games there aren't that many roleplaying opportunities either, because events disappear almost completely after the exploration phase is over.
What comes to actual battles, empire management and other gameplay mechanics; it's basically just a more accessible, more shallow Distant Worlds.

It's pretty good now, and will only get better in due time like most Paradox games.

I'm in a bit of a pickle on my current game though..

>game beginning, see tech to upgrade from tier 1 fission cores on spacecraft.
>meh, I need Torpedoes first.

500 years later

>have defeated 2 other Empires and now The Scourge is invading my backside
>everything is still powered by tier 1 Fission cores
>the entire Battleship lower fittings is Fission cores and one small advanced shield.
>no armor technology has appeared either.
>my Admirals face when we keep sending the Fleet shit to get the heavy lifting done.
>>
They need to remove sectors and add different methods of automation if they want this game to succeed in the long run.
>>
How do I uplift a race? Found another Sol and the earth is swarmed with roaches, I want to integrate them.
>>
Need super science shit like dyson spheres and planet destruction devices (coming as DLC), and yeah having auto survey and auto building would be great.
>>
>>337843835
that or make sectors not fucking shitty
>>
>>337844105

>>
>fotm as fuck

Update.

Took out my anger on another small empire that has no alliances.

It's k though because he didn't like me either. Motherfucker shouldn't have been talkin' shit.
>>
Is there any reason to play a pacifist empire if the only victory conditions are conquest and domination?

It makes sense in Civ because that game has science and culture victories but this game doesn't.
>>
>>337844464
Yes I have it, but how do I use it?
>>
>>337844732
Not really. I'm struggling to finish my pacifist game currently, you just run out of stuff to do when everything is colonized. I'm just bored.
>>
>>337844732
>Is there any reason to play a pacifist empire
No, and it's not just because of victory conditions. After all free space gets colonized there is literally nothing to do in Stellaris apart from military conquest, unless you like twiddling you thumbs around while waiting for research to finish. After exploration is over even the empire roleplay events dry to nothingness.
>>
Warp, Hyperspace or Wormhole travel?
>>
>>337845805
Wormhole because warp is versatile but fucking slown and hypersoace is along lanes and fast.
>>
>>337843668
Having research alternatives is a godsend, I never have trouble getting the options to get techs I want. My only complaint is that eventually my tech clogs up with obsolete stuff, like when I'm getting T4 advanced plasma and industry is still telling me I need to discover the wonders of T1 nuclear missiles.

It's not so bad because by that time T1 techs are cheap enough to complete in a few months, but they seem to clog up space on my tech lists.

>>
Did anyone get the Nova version? Have you made your glorious spider overlords yet?
>>
>>337845805
Warp is the easiest and best, imo. Might require an expensive module, but you have a pretty wide range of planets to jump from and and chase targets pretty easy too.

Wormhole is ok too, it does tie you to wormhole stations which need defense, but it's pretty quick and great for defensive play. Also, your ships get a little extra power for not needing an upgraded drive.

Hyperlane is pretty bad for being inflexible, a lot of times you'll find your fleet outmaneuvered by opponents and be forced to split into smaller ones to engage them. Works fine on the offensive though since it's pretty quick to leave the system and most of the times you're going to hop to all of them sequentially anyway.

I've got tech 3 torpedoes, the highest level shields, crystal armor, psi-computers

And the game refuses to give me tech 2 reactors, so I can't fit jack shit on my ships.

The whole game is filled with so many little broken bits that I think I'm just going to go back to Distant Worlds
>>

Should I kill fallen empires before starting a robot uprising or after? I'm so fucking bored.
>>
>>337844925
uplift only works on primitive races BEFORE a certain point of development. If they are already into the iron age or whatever, they are too far developed for it.
>>
The game is barebones as can be. I think its funny they don't let you automate the science and construction vessels because otherwise the game would be very boring. This game needs 300 dollars worth of dlc to save it or cool mods like star wars, star trek, unversal gundam stuff
>>
Literally what the fuck am I supposed to do now though?

Both of the nations right of me are my vassals soon-to-be-intergrated states and

On the top right and top left of my boarders I have two fucking fallen empires breathing down my neck so I can't expand that way.

The people in front of me have joined a massive alliance/federation so if I go to war with even one of them I'm effectively fighting half of the god damned galaxy at once and the best part is that if you look to the opposite side of the galaxy I'm on you can see a massive nation forming and it's destroying anything it touches. I don't know how i'm going to stop that shit if it starts warring with the alliance.

The randomized tech is pissing me off, they need to do something about that. I have 27 planets to manage and have only gotten two tile block removers researched.

What weaponry does he have? Learn what each weapon does and learn to counter them, it isn't just about having bigger numbers on your fleet.
Also learn to manage your fleet composition, a well structured fleet needs loads of corvettes to soak up fire and brawl while big dick ships dish out damage from the back. Also pay attention to the combat AIs you install on them, having your entire fleet on defensive makes them go full retard.

QUESTION FOR PROS

I'm trying to make a really diverse empire full of different races. That way I can settle on all kinds of planets without terraforming which takes millions of fucking years.

So far I have a tundra race, a desert race, a tropical race (my own) and an ice race. However some of them are pissed that they can't be leaders despite being free members of my empire. I have xeno leadership, everything from policies to my research tells me I should be able to have any of the races in my empire lead.

Yet it just doesn't happen. The only choice of leaders I get is from my own race, and when there's an election (indirect democracy) only ONE only other race makes a bid, and those are the desert dwelling fuckers who are in different political factions than mine.

Over a hundred years later and those shitheads are still begging for independence and keep trying to get elected on that promise.
Why can't I get governors, scientists and similar from any of the other races I have? They even have entire planets dedicated only to them.

Completely different games.

Sins is an RTS that borrows a 4X framework

Stellaris is a 4X that borrows the Grand Strategy framework.

Both devolve into smushing giant ship bobs into each other and hoping you picked the right fleet composition.

Plus Sins uses archaic architecture that only uses 1 CPU core, so is guaranteed to turn into a slideshow by mid-game, not matter how strong your PC.

I say this as a big Sins fan.

I have all these guys in my empire
Big yak fucks
Bird men (my race)
Hovering gas bladders
Lizard men
Sentient robots in servitude

And two other races that have only just been uplifted and now have their own empires as my vassals.
But the gas bladder assholes, I fought them bitterly for years and finally took their shit. Three of their planets are in my possession and I had to beat down a violent rebellion. These days roughly half of them are deeply unhappy, the rest are fine. The ones that are pissed off are all xenophobes while the rest have lost that trait somehow.

All three planets they live on have these rebels, and they each have a party demanding freedom. And they are the ONLY ONES who try to become president. Not the yaks, not the lizards, not even the robots. Only the fuckers who want to leave. I have xeno leadership, I changed my policy so anyone can become a leader and none of them even try. I feel like I've done something wrong somewhere.

The lizard men should be all rights be right up there with me, they came from the inside of the planet I started on. They thought the world above was a myth and when they bored through the crust into what they believed was nothingness was there, I accepted them and made them my equals but they still don't give a fuck about my politics.
Don't get it.

>point defense

Based on fleet formation, your cruisers will be stuck in back for most of the fight and never get a chance to get close enough to use the PD.

You should have dedicated PD Corvettes to take out missiles and torpedoes on the front lines.

If you use cruisers at all, give them Large, long-range weapons so they can fire from the back and attack the other larger ship classes that are giving the other fleet buffs
>>
>>337857918
No, they had like 2500 hp (red crystal plating) and 40% armor. Haven't installed them on any ship, cause they are waste of energy and space when you want big guns. And in former models of cruisers, where I had my shields on, the result was just the same, if not worse.

Build them with a construction ship, come out with like a small 1x3 tile world with no inherent resources

You can drop them on planets and it gives an event like the asteroid where if they aren't destroyed before collides it creates blocker tiles and kills pops on the planet also any pops living on the colony are killed as well.

One other thing to note is that you're supposed to be able to counteract this by using the Aggressive ship AI in your large ships, vs. the Defensive AI which actually is supposed to make them hang back, but in my experience it doesn't help.

I've had the best luck turning my Cruisers and Battleships into snipers that take out the buff-giving Battleships, with very large mixed groups of corvettes and destroyers using various specialized loadouts (30 laser-focus, 15 torpedo-focus, 15 PD-focus, etc.). Then I just adjust the ratios to counter whatever my enemy's using, rather than fiddling with the designs.

Working on a mod.

The idea is that it will let you send a colony ship of your choosing off into deep space and reappear randomly on the map near a suitable planet, it no longer under your control and you will have no idea where it went to. It will colonize and grow or be defeated, there's no telling.

If you ever manage to interact with the empire it spawned, you will get the option to ally with them regardless of your ethos and policies.
I probably won't finish it but that's the idea behind it. Someone else is just going to do it better anyway I bet.

You can easily create your own races, and use humans as the basis.
I wish there was an option to create new races by combining DNA of ones in your empire.
For example, take a bestial mammalian and a human. The result could be a large, strong and hairy human suited to live on tundra planets.

DNA tailoring. It would mean having to morph portraits though and nobody would ever make that much effort.

Honestly the whole habitability thing becomes pointless once you get gene modding.

Just drop one of your pops on a planet with 20% habitability or what not doesn't matter if it's by a colony ship or just resetting them to it just so long as it's like 1 or 2 pops. Then you gene mod them and don't fuck with anything else and limit the modification to just that planet, should take like a month and bam suddenly you have people adapted to that planet.

In less than a year you can have specialized versions of your race for each planet type rendering the whole terraforming system and everything else regarding habitability pointless.

The biggest problem you're probably having is you're using large guns. Large guns come with an accuracy penalty and corvettes have naturally high evade rates meaning you're accuracy rate is probably somewhere in the 20% range.

Just pump out battleships loaded to the brim with small guns and you'll crush them every time.

I started a universe with 1000 stars and 25 empires. Went for the diplomatic, expanding-by-embracing tactic, everything starting at 0.
Now I can see the entire galaxy and every faction in it, not sure how it happened. I may have traded star charts a couple of times, no idea if that did it.

It fucking sucks, the mystery is gone. I know where everything is and there's no surprises, doesn't even look like there's any fallen empires on the map either. Makes me look at the map and think "great, now I need to deal with all these assholes" instead of "I can't wait to get out there and see what I'll run into".

Is this unavoidable? Will you eventually just know where everything and everyone is?

I almost feel like making a new 1000 star map and having only 10 or 5 enemies but vastly ramped up in difficulty. So space is less crowded.
Is this a good idea? Will there be more mystery and exploring? Can I still uplift or enslave primitives to "make" more alien life?

I really, really want more planets that are inhabited by life in different stages, and for those life forms to become empires on their own as well.

>>
I would overhaul the entire pop/economy/politics/diplomacy system. I've posted my thoughts before but basically I think the game would be much better modeled after Victoria 2. Here's a few of what I have so far.

First, change the pops so it isn't one pop per grid. Rather, the grid fills up with pops over time which affects its output. Pops are split into different socioeconomic classes. There are lower classes which make up slaves, soldiers and laborers, middle class which are scientists, clergy (along with a religion overhaul), officers, and upper class which are elite. Based on economic class, pops have different wants and motivations. The upper class have the slowest ethics divergence, with the middle class having a moderate one, and the lower class being happiness dependent. Pops having different ethics will make them join factions that will try to change the ethics of the empire.

There are now economic policies: privatization, state intervention and state control. Each grid on a planet has an owner, the empire or private individuals. Any grid the empire controls can be sold to private individuals. This allows raising of instant funds, but decreases the amount of resources owned per month from that grid. Privately owned grids will experience faster pop growth and attract immigration. This allows the player to colonize planets and sell land to expedite growth while raising funds.

Rename "Influence" to "Soft Power", or not, that really isn't important but I think it would better represent what that resource does. Soft Power represents the influence of both domestic and foreign affairs. Soft Power is gained through winning wars, economic trade agreements, expanding your sphere of influence, and by producing culture. This all requires new mechanics to work, like SOI. Players can use SP to influence domestic affairs like they currently can, but can also use it to influence other empire's policies, if the empire accepts.

I have more ideas but running out of room.
>>

Traveller 5 is a hellish mess of charts, avoid. Mongoose Traveller is great, classic traveller is okay if you're super grognard.

Hyperspace is the fastest, and you can use it from any location in the system, but you're restricted to the lanes. Forcing it for every empire can add interesting strategy of blocking off expansion at key points

Ever played Endless Space? It's like that. Allows you to move much faster than warp, but only along hyperspace lanes, which can get wonky sometimes. I still prefer it to other types because it's so fucking fast and far reaching.

Lemme tell you about this anomaly event.

My researchers found a low, almost indistinguishable heat signature over an ice planet. When investigating they find a lab built into a cliff. It appears hastily assembled, but readings say it is several thousand years old.

Even more puzzling, the markings and signs are all in our language, as is the designs and tech. It could just as easily have built by us. Upon entering, we are met by a solitary scientist. He is the same race as us, and claims he was exiled, in fact he refuses to refer to himself as anything but "the exile". The government has no record of him, nor of ever exiling anyone. And if the readings are correct, he would have been on the planet from before we mastered space travel.

The exile discourages our investigation and tells us that he is willing to join our empire if we leave the base and never return.

I choose to ignore him, the base must be searched.

After days of searching, the investigation team comes up empty handed. Though the base has many readings and scientific info, nothing of it is of any particular note and only deals with regular planetary activity. Whatever the station was once monitoring is impossible to know from this info, but the only hint at something more is seismic readings that suggest the core of the planet might be hollow, and that the mass and gravitational field of the planet has changed recently.

The scientist who called himself the exile has vanished without a trace, neither leaving on our ship or by any other means. As if he never existed in the first place, our team could find no traces of him.

I think you would know how to do that if you separated the races and species. Also, throw in one if someone still wants to play as all the races.

The game needs more option when it comes to dealing aliens on inhabited planets.
I tried to colonize one with pre-sentient fish people on it so I could use them as slaves. Of course they just vanished the second my ship touched down.

And why can you only uplift races into vassalage? Why not give the player a choice between making them allies, part of your empire or simply free from the start?
Even better, how about the option to help them in secret by giving them tech and help from afar, making them responsible for their own uplifting with only a gentle guiding hand?

Right now uplifting a race is so unceremonious and dull.

I listened to his warnings and he joined my empire. He's 200 years old now, even got elected president a couple of times.

Man it's fucking space adventures they're all fucking stupid. The point is there's plenty of options, it's all really down to having someone prepared to run it.

Would it be hard to customize the UI depending on race? Or at least give the player some color choices?
Getting sick of the green.

It's disappointingly shallow and bland, but that's modern Paradox for you. Gotta attract that Civ audience somehow.
I was hoping against hope for more serious and realistic pop systems and an ethics/government system with some actual meaning and depth behind it (seriously? 6 questions dictate the entire range of ethics and ideology ever? and you can't even scale them back and forth, only being stuck on 4 pre-determined states?). I'm not gonna lie, I sank probably a good 20+ hours into it already, but I'm glad I didn't buy it. It's so painfully unimaginative.

The inevitable DLC deluge COULD potentially make it more decent, but I don't see how can some very fundamental mechanics could ever be fixed. Paradox aren't getting rid of nonsensical mana shit anytime soon.

You are asking for too much. This game is designed for retarded reddit shit who just came in fresh from CK2 and EU4. They'll find it too confusing and write a bunch of negative reviews on the Steamâ„¢ store page. And we wouldn't want that, now would we?

Looking at these threads really tells you what Paradox's target demographic with this game was. It's not for people interested in strategy or even 4X, it's just a meme game for epik memesters who want to roleplay as their favorite Game of Thrones memempire in space.

the irony of your memepost is stifling.

If the game was basically Vick2 in space that was more of a sandbox than historical simulation then this game would be perfect. Some of the mechanics I like, such as ethics as they can represent diverging culture in a dynamic way that other Paradox games don't really do. But almost every other mechanic falls flat and lacks anywhere near the depth of Paradox's previous games.

I really hope that mods can fix some of the issues I have. I might even look into it myself one day. I'm afraid that some things just can' be fixed due to the 4x design, and I worry that my ideas for the pop overhaul would break the game. It already runs pretty slow as it is now, I imagine having to simulate a lot more pop details during gameplay would slow it down more.
