>Night Dive Studios turns to crowdfunding for anticipated remake.
>A much requested remaster of System Shock is currently in development, and based on some early gameplay footage the Unity-powered revamp is coming along very nicely. It's likely we'll have to wait a while to play it though, because Night Dive Studios has announced that it intends to launch a Kickstarter campaign next month.
>In addition to looking much more fancy, the remake will stay very true to the original – though the user-interface will receive some much needed spit and polish.

You backing this right?
>>
>>337841101
Nope.
>>
Funny, I thought NDS has a shitton of money, that's why they do all this
>>
>>337841391
Shotton of money from where, selling slightly updated versions of old games that barely anyone buy
>>
>>337841483

where the fuck would they even get money from?
>>

>Shotton of money from where, selling slightly updated versions of old games that barely anyone buy
You're right, it was only a cult classic where just the disc sold for $60+ because the IP was in limbo. Nobody would buy that old game.
>>
>>337841880
Collector's items are always more desired
>>

They weren't collectors items, they were bare discs.

didn't this already come out on steam last year?
>>
>>337842220
Which is basically a collector's item now since they are rare unlike a digital game
>>
>>337842375
It was a port of original for new systems with slight fixes. This one is full remake
>>
>that graphics engine
Please don't.
>>
>>337842391
This was before the digital release. People paid that much for a game that old because it was the only legal way to play it. The demand really was that high.

I gotta say they've done a pretty good job with the interiors. The visuals were pretty out there so I always wondered how they would transition it into full 3d but it looks pretty nice

>>Honestly unironically thinking a shit UI makes a game "More hardcorez!"

A Bioshit fan would think the System Shock 2 UI is bad, when it's the least cumbersome and best made UI's I've ever used in an FPS RPG.

Spare me your excuses.

SS2 is better than Bioshock but it isn't a bad game at all.
>>

I don't think a game that has been ripped off as much as SS2 (Doom 3, Dead Space, Bioshock) could ever be called even remotely bad.

The crew arent zombies, they're people with worms on them who grew into worm people. Their bodies are barely even recognizable as human.
>>
>>337845037
Seriously the pacing of the game is awful, combat is basic turn based combat with zero depth, No party organization to give certain characters priority over others, no unique equipment builds that reward smarter thinking, not harder thinking

Only reason people like it is cause Smash Bros made Ness popular
>>
If you don't think this looks amazing you are a bad person. They could have made it edgy dark blue grey but instead they kept the cartoony, surrealistic aesthetic of the interiors and enemies. If you don't think this looks incredible based on the trailer you are an edgelord contrarian--sorry!

This might as well be copypasta--the same reasons that everyone gives, all of which are shitty or out-right wrong.

>No party organization to give certain characters priority over others
Why do you need party organization to give priority to characters when they all have equal priority?

Ness is the Knight/Tank class
Paula is Mage/Healer
Jeff is Rogue
Poo is the Battle Mage
The perfect composition

They are all used equally because they all have abilities that the other party members do not have.

Gears of War was ripped off by pretty much every single third person shooter in the last 10 years, and cover-based shooters are all terrible, Gears included.
Same goes for CoD4, which effectively created the no-level design-allowed linear scriptfest quagmire that the FPS genre is stuck in today.
>>
>>337846582
System Shock 1 is 3d. I get what you're saying though, it looks a bit strange with high fidelity graphics
>>
>>337847749
You do realise the originator can be good and the follow up clones can be bad for just rehashing the same concepts over and over, right?

Like I hate Resident Evil 4 with a passion, as it resulted in RE5, RE6, Dead Space, etc
>>
>>337846985
Huh, I never realised. Or at least I didn't know the backstory, is it mentioned anywhere in the game?
>>
Earthbound fans didn't like it for the gameplay, they liked it for the setting and the NPCs, the quirky humor and occasionally fucked up themes. I'm not even someone who likes Earthbound and even I know that shit.

And yet, nobody gave a shit about Killswitch, and cover-based shooting only became prevalent due to Gears. Just like mid-90s FPS games were called Doomclones despite it being nowhere close to the first FPS.

The manual entry for them explicitly states they couldn't control the mutation in humans, so they definitely weren't designed as workers.

>>
>>337849380

I know hoe successful RE2 was, you couldn't LIVE in the PS1/N46 era without knowing and seeing a whole shitload of RE2 clones.

Your logic for hating it is still retarded tho. That'd be like me saying I hate RE2 because Squaresoft tried to make Parasite Eve 2 an RE2 clone and fucked up the whole game as a result and buttfucked the franchise forever.
>>
>>337849809

RE5 gave that to me when they killed Wesker, so for that reason alone I prefer it to 4.

>Kickstarting famous brands
Crowdfunding is acceptable, if some indie dev nobody ever heard of is trying to make a game. They have no other way of getting funding.

If an established company with a recognised brand needs to turn to Kickstarter for money, it means their project is bullshit and professional publishers already kicked them out the door because of it.
Do not fall for these fraudsters, /v/. They are only trying to sell you a product on Kickstarter because they know you wouldn't buy it after you've actually seen the final product.

That's not true at all. Kickstarter is just a great way to get double the money. First you have free money to make a game, then you actually sell the game that was already financed with free money. It's like you made two games, and you didn't even have to suck Goldberg's cock once.
>>
>>337850469

I can't fucking stand RE5. Yeah it brings some closure untill RE6 ripped its coffin right back open.

Yeah RE4 was kinda lacking in the scare department compared to the other games but at least there was a lot tension and shit. RE5 destroys even that with the co-op bullshit.
>>
>>337851173
>if some indie dev nobody ever heard of is trying to make a game
No anon, it's the other way around. You should never pledge money to developers who haven't shipped a complete game before the kickstarter- they will just mismanage the funds because they have no idea how to run a project, as we've seen time and time again.
Kickstarter should be used for games with a niche appeal, by established developers who can't secure publisher funding due to a perceived lack of interest. That's exactly what this project is.

naw, this doesn't need it. SS and SS2 are easily replayable the way they are. It should have gotten a black mesa type remake, where it's basically the original with a new coat of paint. This looks dumb
>>
>>337859725
Replayable, but not playable first time
>>
>>337859459

Volgarr, Shovel Knight, The Banner Saga, FTL, Shadowrun Returns, Shadowgate, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: OS, And Hyper Light Drifter to an extent.

Path of Exile was crowdunded too, just not by KS if I'm remrmbering correctly

Bloodstained, the only game I ever actually helped fund is coming along nicely as well so.
>>

Nope.
>>
>>337859725
>basically the original with a new coat of paint
That's exactly what this is.
>>
>>337860743
naw, unity is different. black mesa is still using source, it translated better. Unity and source engine are nothing alike.

>Kickstarter

Yeah, surely this wont wind up like Mighty Number Nine, Clang, Yoggsquest, the ultimate cooler, Ouya, the $100 3D printer, The Stomping Land, Code Hero, Double Fine Adventure...

JUST GIVE ME TUROK 2 ALREADY FOR FUCKS SAKE.
>>
>>337860147
All of those are shit, what are you on about? And FTL would have been ok if they didn't stop development instead of developing it fully, but when you get money before you make a game, you tend to run off with it.
>>
>>337860147
9 success stories and how many failures?

Now look, I don't have anything against crowdfunding, but you can't deny the sheer amount of projects that fail completely or just put out a poor product.

Many of those games listed were funded in the early waves of crowdfunded games before you had every hack after free funds. Since then we've seen the real success rate of the platform/model and it doesn't look so great.
>>
>>337861246
*tips*
>>
>>337861263

There's a lot more success stories you know
>>
>>337861350
FTL had a budget of 10k dude. The entire game realistically cost 10k. They got 200k, they could have made a game that was 20 (T W E N T Y) times bigger. But they just rushed to finish it and went to fuck Thai whores or whatever.

Feel free to explain to me why they wouldn't return the 190k if their budget was 10k, and where exactly did 190k go?

Oh and guess what, even though the game was made with TWENTY TIMES as much free money as was needed, THEY'RE STILL SELLING IT FOR MORE MONEY.
>>
>>337861246

Here's your (You)
>>
>>337861552
I'm sure there are but it pales in comparison to the failures.
That is not in question.
>>
>>337861069
yeah but those are all different games, this is a game tryign to live up to the hype of an old game. You cant blame people for being wary of giving their money away to a remake, on top of being a crowdfunded remake by the people that didn't make the original game.
>>
>>337841101
Awesome that they're keeping the level layout very similar. I'll definitely consider backing. I just hope the performance isn't shit because of Unity.
>>
>>337861696

This is true for basically anything in the vidya industry or most industries in general, shit falls through the floor all the damn time.
>>
>>337861925

Didn't they make the enhanced version of the original game? ANd they're working with people from Looking Glass studios apparently.
>>
>>337862005
And those failures will have a net effect on the willingness of future backers.
That's why you're retarded. You're annoyed about people being justifiably cautious.
>>
>>337843161
I fucking did it. "whops"

>THEY'RE STILL SELLING IT FOR MORE MONEY.

Its a product retard, and none of your points says the game is bad just you think it should have more content
>>
>>337862302

No, people here just shit on anything kickstarter-related even if it has gameplay or has a solid foundation cuz they got burned by Inafune.

If that's the case I'll save my money until it's ready for a commercial release.
>>
>>337862536
My point is that you could have had 20 games like that for the price. Why is this acceptable in your opinion?

What does it mean that it's a product? You're a product.

>>
>>337862598
No, they shit on anything kikestarter because so much of it goes nowhere.

Most heavily shilled kickstarters end up overfunded, too large in scope due to the overfunding, understaffed, DELAYS DELAYS DELAYS, rushed, buggy and unfinished. The ones that do make it to the end, you've got worse odds than 50/50 on whether it'll actualy be a good game.

Again, nothing wrong with the overall model it's just the position it is currently in.
>>
What kind of music do you think they'll be going for? Faithful to the original style or something different?
>>
>>337863445
At a guess I'm going to say they'll want to do something more like SS2.
>>
>>337863445
since the remake looks very similar to the original, im guessing original style

>>
>>337863980
Honestly though is there really that much point to having all that on screen at all times. The weapons they can just move to a weapon wheel, on PC you could just use the numbers to switch. Tab to bring up items and data, and I guess access to full map. On xbox that would be the start menu. Function buttons for the augs similar to Deus Ex, on console something like press LT to bring up a menu and pick one of them. There really only needs to be the energy bars and a minimap as static hud elements. Though I saw the biometer in the trailer too

Not the OP but I would rather the game be something more than the original with a makeover.
