In Wolfenstein TNO there are a bunch of tedious/barely gameplay segments including one in which you must retrieve moldy concrete and give it to an NPC.

The shooting was bad, in pretty much every way it could have been while still being technically functional. I guess the plasmids added variety in how to approach situations, but outside of big daddy encounters it didn't seem to worthwhile.
Maybe I've just grown out of FPS campaigns, but I can't even remember the last time one entertained me. Tried to replay Prey a few months ago and got bored pretty quickly. Started playing Singularity last week and gave up before I even got to any of the cool time powers.
Even shit like Serious Sam makes me feel antsy after a single level, and I would just rather be doing something else.

It takes a very special fps to keep me interested for more than a couple of levels. Only one I'm not tired of and replay almost annually is Stalker with different mods each time.

For me it's just that the genre has been standing still so fucking long. There hasn't really been a FPS that pushes the boundaries of the genre since the first Crysis.
I just want a truly solid AAA shooter with great graphics and some unique twist on the formula that isn't a shitty gimmick.
Day Z and GTA V FPS-mode both almost had it, but both also had some other serious flaws that just killed it for me.

While I did have fun with it when it came out, I recently played it again and it wasn't really as fun as I remembered it. Regenerating health, hitscan enemies, no jumping, 3 weapon limit, scripted events and QTEs really drag the game down for me.

Syndicate has a very good gun and shooting mechanics. You can almost *feel* the weapon in your hands (animation, sounds, etc. are very well made). The single is pretty short, but contains a good level and visual design. Story is meh. Co-op mode is full of fun on the "expert" difficulty, but it is dead. Sometimes I manage to play some games with my friends, but it will be extremely hard to find a game with random people.

CoJ Gunslinger is seriously fucking great. Over the top cowboy arcade shooting with a very amusing narrative for the campaign, and the arcade levels are fucking great too. Horribly underrated.
Another fantastic single player shooter isDoom 2016, the arena fights you get thrown into starting midway through the game are fucking exceptional and loads of messy fun.
