It's pretty simple actually: Only the first game on this list was a Sonic game. The other two were a Mario game with a Sonic skin and a Ratchet and Clank game with a Sonic skin. Let's see what they give us in a month, or so on Sonic's 25th and then we'll pass judgement. Sound good?

Sonic Lost World was an attempt to make Sonic control better, and also an attempt to attract Mario fans. Naturally that ended up meaning less focus on going fast.

Sonic Boom is an atrocity. "Speed" sections aren't fast, "combat" sections are absolute fucking shit, "platforming" sections are babby's first platformer, etc.
and that's not accounting for the shitty, cartoony designs, the glitches, etc

Only 3D Games with good controls were the Adventure Games(they still weren't satisfying controls like the Genesis games but at least you felt in control on those games)

Boost has control issues, although they're more "Sonic handles like a flying brick" more than "this is unplayable," and at least the Unleashed style stages are fully designed around that fact.

In Shadow/06 days, Sega had toned down Sonic's movement from SA1/2 standards because he was really twitchy to control (and admittedly, SA-era Sonic is the best 3D Sonic has controlled -- wherever you pointed the stick, that's where Sonic went, the real issue is how the game tried to map everything onto two buttons for no good reason, so you'd bounce attack into the pit under the rings you tried to light dash through).

Can't really blame 'em. Show me any Sonic fan and I'll show you a person who has a very different opinion of what a Sonic game is than the next person.
Finding a happy medium that will please the MOST Sonic fans is difficult to do, especially when you don't actually pay attention to what your fans are telling you.

In fact, many fans have resorted to playing fan games and ROM hacks exclusively because those fans can collaborate and work together to create a Sonic experience that caters to certain types of Sonic fans and advertise it as such. You've got ROM hacks and custom engines for 2D, UDK, Blitz and soon-to-be Unreal 4 for 3D. If you don't like how a fangame dev handled the engine? Change it to your liking and make your own interpretation!

I actually have a lot of new info to share, if you folks are interested, but moreover, I have a conundrum that my team and I have been going back and forth on:

So, our level will have many intertwining paths and, as it should, it will have lots of checkpoints at key locations.

Our question to you guys is this: would it, or would it not be cool to be able to warp between previously-activated checkpoints in order to promote exploration, or do you feel that it would harm the aspect of running around the environment on your own and backtracking in a more natural way if you so desired?

Possible, but not our current goal. The current goal is Sonic and Sonic only. The core mechanics are already unlike any 3D Sonic before it, so we thought it best to focus on him before possibly expanding to new characters and play-styles for future releases.

One thing is for sure, though: your desire for momentum-based gameplay is more than covered with our game.

Our strict philosophy states that the player will never, ever have control taken away from them for as long as their feet touch the ground. There will be no automated running sections and no rail-roading splines. Ever.
