Local multiplayer is a direct downgrade from online. This problem is what causes Nintendo to be so fucking irrelevant in the industry nowadays, they never implement online multiplayer sans SSB. People want to sit in front of their own systems and play with their friends via wifi.
Online is a huge selling point for lots of people, and not including it is essentially pouring gasoline over tens of thousands of dollars and throwing a lit match on it.

When it comes to platformers the bias usually goes to controllers, but I doubt there's any real advantage other than comfort and ease of access, assuming there's no need for analogue inputs in the face buttons or twin sticks mechanics.
