Do you ever watch other people play games?
>>
>>337781741
I think watching sports is just as stupid. are there any other strawman examples I can actually work with?
>>
Only if they can play the game on a high skill level.
>>
I'm watching someone play a video game right now.
>>
if you don't watch other people play fighting games, for one, you're missing out on a lot of ways you can get better. other people have already done work for you, you just have to sit down and watch a video at x.5 speed sometimes and figure out what they know.
>>
>>337781741

If they provide some level of entertainment? sure.
>>
I watched GiantBomb's original Mario Party Party earlier.

Good times.
>>
>>337781741
I watch reviews or previews so I know what I'm getting

I don't watch other people play games for entertainment.
>>
I watch people play games if they have some form of interaction with me

Watching people play games passively is the most mundane activity I can think of

Only if it's a game that I like
>>
The problem isn't inherent to the activity of "watching others doing things" itself: there are many things you can watch, each tailored for a different audience.

Watching LPers is acceptable if you are a teenager at most, after that you might as well brand on your forehead that you are a clinically retarded manchild, since it's basically humor for hyperactive children.
>>
>>337781741
>needing to defend how you spend your free time from le evil normie jocks by making a poorly drawn strawman comic
>>
Only if I'm in the same room as the person playing, so it would either be me showing someone a game, teaching someone a game, someone showing me a game, or I'm sitting out a game or match because there are more people wanting to play than there are controllers inputs available.

The exception to the rule are fighting game tournaments since I can learn a lot from seeing people handle different situations and how they use a character's toolkit. It helps to see it done in a live environment since it doesn't rely on showing off bread and butter combos performed in training mode like a lot of Youtube videos do.
>>
>>337781741
Honestly who doesn't these days? Even people who don't watch streams or let's plays still watch walkthroughs of games either to see what they're missing or to watch a game they aren't going to buy.
>>
>>337781741
I like watching my friends play games I've already finished
>>
>>337781741
I used to watch Jon era Game Grumps, in fact, I am still fond of Goof Troupe, Drakkhen, Chulip, some VSs and especially Grant Kirkhope episode
>>
People don't watch sports for the commentary where in most people who watch LPs do, in that regard it's stupid to compare. If you're taking competitive there's a difference but he's clearly supposed to be watching a Markiplier type.

If you're trying to play any game at more than a basic level, regularly watching better players is pretty much mandatory for improvement. This is especially true in esports, fighting games, and speedrunning.

Watching other people play vidya is basically cuckold fetish

instead of playing the game yourself (having sex) you watch other people play (have sex) and enjoy it.
>>
>>337784719
I didn't claim that playing with better players wasn't mandatory. I claimed that watching better players is mandatory. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Also, speedrunning, score running and time trial based play is single player, so you can't really play it "with" people.
>>
>>337784916
watching better players isn't mandatory for anything. Simply discussing the game with people and sharing tech is enough to suffice. Before youtube people didn't see the best of the best for months at a time yet competition for MP games was extremely fierce and single player world records were being placed that were rarely beaten.

I wonder how long before people just accept it as the norm, like there isn't anything weird or inherently stupid about it. I am sure the many 14-15 year old who browse /v/ already do.
>>
>>337781741
Only when I am 100% stuck in a place in a game, and if the FAQ at hand doesn't say what the fuck to do properly.

That is, I rarely check FAQs or videos since that shit is literal hand holding, only when I have already exhausted everything possible to do, which doesn't happen with modern games since they are all made for retarded manchildren
>>
>>337785292
I know people who do this and claim they already played the game from beginning to end
>>
>>337781741
They are both totally different things though

Watching any big event like the Champions League or whatever makes any Esport a fucking cringefest, and you just HAVE to be autistic to deny this.

>>

unfortunately. its hard finding people who isnt fucking atrocious at games or is even remotely charismatic.

most of my friends tend to have surface level interest in "nerd" hobbies (games, animus, etc.) so trying to get in-depth discussion typically ends with me basically talking to a wall.

to be fair im probably not better when they talk about their hobbies (sports, cars, etc.) but i try to interject from a novice/newcomer stand point.
>>
>>337785140
>watching better players isn't mandatory for anything
That's why competitive gamers never watch other players, right? Maybe it's not mandatory, but you can't deny that it is helpful.
>Before youtube people didn't see the best of the best for months at a time yet competition for MP games was extremely fierce
And now there are more good players than ever before because of the ease in which people can observe and study other players, and perhaps even innovate on what people already do.
>and single player world records were being placed that were rarely beaten.
Single player world records are being beaten more often because it's more efficient to learn and improve on existing strategies when you're able to observe and study better players. A record rarely being broken can mean a number of things. One of these things is lack of resources for new players to learn from. One type of resource being tutorials and videos from other players.
>>
>>337783016
you know most LPers are the worst at video games right?

the only thing you can probably learn from is speedrunners or actual pro players

Video games as a medium is very unique because of the interactiveness you can't find in any other medium. When you read a book, the point is not the flipping the pages and paper sounds, but the story written in the pages. You get the intended experience if you listen to it in audio or watch the movie based on the book.
With video games this is not the case. When you watch someone else play the game you're just watching a mediocre animated movie and you completely miss out from the interactivity.

I ran into a similar situation with a friend a while back with Kingdom Hearts where he started a discussion about it, but admitted that he only read the wiki articles about the games without actually having played any of the games in question. It happened again with Ace Attorney when he started talking about Godot with me, but only received all of the information from a wiki article and didn't even play the game he was in, let alone any Ace Attorney game.

I even introduced him to a game one time and he ended up enjoying it. I said he could play it whenever he feels like it at any time, but he watched a speedrun of it instead. It's odd and annoying at the same time.
>>
>>337781741

Yeah, usually after playing games myself for ten hours and i want to unwind and listen to some jackasses make shitty jokes and talk over the game they're playing.
Sometimes I listen to those videos while I play vidya and it's fun
>>
>>337787380
Yeah I feel ya, my friend knows a lot about a wide repertoire of games, from all genres. And yet when he starts talking to me about one I've played, and something that we have in common, turns out he just watched/read about it instead of playing it.
Whilst he can tell me cools facts about it, stuff that I had no idea about, we can't actually discuss gameplay/strategies and he generally has a very shallow understanding of it.

LP average viewers are 14~17 year old kids, Baseball viewers are 20 ~ 40

Not handegg you cuck. Proper football, with your feet, not that autistic fatass rip off sport from rugby

This. I don't want to watch some retard screaming and have no idea what he's doing, for example Game Grumps.

Dude what the fuck are you even talking about? Me and my uni buddies play soccer a couple times a week and I play tennis on the weekends. Any fatass /v/irgin can go outside and play some soccer. Fuck off with your fortitude bullshit.

I watch speed runs, and sometimes guides to item locations. Also PVP videos are useful for showing techniques. I don't understand let's players who are just shit at a game, play through the latest releases with their faggot faces in the corner making quips at everything. That is some Cancer right there.
>>
>>337781741
I use vidya stream as background noise when deoing stuff though. Like listening to radio but BUT ABout things that interest me.

>>337781741
Not really, Seems pointless. I'd rather watch raw gameplay footage then have to look at someones stupid face in the corner of the screen or listen to them try desperately hard to be funny.

Even when I do watch gameplay footy it's just for a whether or not i should buy this game kinda thing. I prefer to have my own experiences.
>>
The only acceptable types of video game steams:

you forgot tournaments and pro matches.

also there are types of high level, involved gameplay that doesn't involve multiplayer or speedrunning. high level rhythm games, for example.
>>
>>337781741
Fighting game tourneys. I also watch other kinds of gameplay videos but very rarely.

>>337786272
>you could play a game if you just stopped watching a stream on a computer
Yes, but only if you have the game, the system it runs on and in some cases the suscription so you are allowed to play.

Why are they both eating movie bags of popcorn

>watching professionals play a sport is just as stupid as watching amateurs play a game

this is such a terrible analogy

maybe if it was about the guy watching like, EVO or something it'd at least be similar.

>>337796460
what makes them amateurs? they make money doing it, its exactly as professional as playing another game like football for money

I'm lonely and need fake friends to listen to to pass the time with. They also help a lot with my insomnia.
I watch Giant Bomb and Northernlion because I think their bantz are top tier.
>>
>>337781741
What's wrong with this argument?
>>
>>337781741
Sure. I put LP's on in the background when I'm doing other stuff and I'm happy enough to watch other people play IRL because usually it's my roommates and there's always good banter.
>>
in this thread people who watch esports defend themselves watching esports and mock those watching sports, and vice versa

yet these people participate in neither
>>
It depends on which game it is, and how well the person is playing the game.

What I'll never understand is all these fucking kids who watch other people do nothing except fuck about in Minecraft for hours on end. Every time I see it happen, I'm sure the child is a retard.

Watched entire Dead Space Extraction.
It's literally movie so I didn't miss anything.

>>
>>337781741
nope

>>337801087
you can just boot up a game on your computer and play it while it's not that easy with sports
>>
>>337801712
This. So much this. I'll watch someone play a game if I don't have it or if they're doing a certain build, or even a stream once in a while. But when kids just sit there and watch people dick around on Minecraft it drives me nuts. My little brother is guilty of this, 99% of the time when I visit my dad he's glued to his tablet just watching some dingus play minecraft. I mean Jesus it's not like there's even any substance there.
>>
>>337801932
>you can just boot up a game on your computer and play it
Yeah okay, let me just transform my PC into an arcade machine and transform myself into a top Street Fighter player and plug myself into the matrix so i can instantly learn how to play at a competitive level.
>>
>>337802131
you don't need to transform your PC when there's already games and emulators for it
>>
>>337781741
I watch high level players sometimes just to see how they play. I can't stand watching ones who aren't very good and lel so randum xD
>>
>>337802229
>emulation
Lmao, jesus fuck you are clueless.
>just play the game yourself
I also don't want to play street fighter, I just want to watch it at a high level, like how most people who watch sports just want to watch sports at a high level and not play them.
>>
Yes. When I just want to laze back and just don't feel like playing video games myself.
>>
>>337781741
all the time, I practically use streams or lps with tons of episodes as white noise. The only game I play these days is because I've spent too many hours becoming half decent at it, I need to stop being lazy and get into my backlogs.
>>
>>337786343
This. It was made by redditards who didn't like the term normalfag, so they made a PC version of it so their /r/4chan screencaps would get more likes
>>
>>337802521
Why don't you just get good at the game if you want it at a high level then, or are you afrraid of failing?
>>
I watch my best friend play the harvest moon games. They are the only games I can watch without feeling like I am missing out on playing it.
>>
>>337804019
Not that other guy, but there are plenty of reasons why someone may not spend the time to become a high level player for a game. It may be they do not have the time, or that they are unable to do so. Or they are not willing to devote that much time to a single game because they enjoy playing multiple games. There are plenty of reasons why watching high level players play a game is reasonable.
>>
>>337804019
>Why don't you just get good at the game if you want it at a high level then, or are you afrraid of failing?
Why don't you just join the NHL if you want it at a high level then? Why even watch it at all? Are you afraid of failing?
>>
>>337782554
There is no strawman here, moron-kun, the strip merely points out common hypocrisy.

No, I don't participate digital cucking, but I do like watch my GF having sex with brown mens. (yes, I am german)
>>
>>337781741
yes, ur mum
>>
It depends.
Since I play fighting games, I enjoy watching pro players stream so I can learn a few things, and by extension I watch tournaments too.

If I decide to watch omeone stream anything else, be it single player or multiplayer, it better be a game I already played. There is NO reason to watch someone play a game you haven't played, at all. The only exception is maybe if the streamer is playing a shitty game just for fun and then moves on to something else.
>>
>>337781741
No I don't but I usually stream for a few friends when I get a new game and they wanna see how it is, so usually a 20-30 mins stream and that's it, and only for my friends. When someone else enters the stream we just laugh it off joking about how I should get money for streaming.

Exactly what most people do , ignore the youtubers and watch real gamers play the game
>>
>>337781741
If they have a good point to show about it, then okay. Bonus points if they're actually trying to entertain.
>>
>>337781741
I watch Professional CS:GO Tournaments. That's about it.
>>
>>337804851
The strawman is that the normie is watching a competition of people at the highest level of skill and the neet is watching a shitter consume media.

Don't act retarded.

Also esports are cool. Csgo, melee, etc are fun to watch.
>>
I've watched playthroughs of games like TLoU and Firewatch, mainly to know what the fuck it is and why is it so much talked about. I'd say I didn't miss out on anything by just watching a playthrough instead of actually trying to play them.

Im a moderator of a partnered streamer who is around rank 80 in the game he plays, pulls around 200-600 viewers. I mainly watch it not for the fact hes good, but because hes a nice person to talk to, played a few games with him and hes a top lad.

grew up watching my brother play, most of the time because he was bigger than me and could wrestle the controller away.

also watched my cousins play.

went through a phase where i just wanted to go to relative's houses to play their games, nowadays i like watching friends and family play vidya. except for my brother who just plays MMOs.

playing the telltale's walking dead while my mother watched and made the decisions was the closest i ever got to playing vidya with my mother, which is sad because she thought i was watching a film. but it was very enjoyable, i really envy people that have parents who enjoy the same kind of entertainment.

I think Let's Plays might be worth it if you like the aesthetics or story but don't enjoy the gameplay. Instead of forcing yourself to play through a game just watch the story on Youtube.
>>
>hurr durr you have to be in gud shape for sports
It has nothing to with skill level, they're both just entertainment. Some people might watch football to relax and shut their brain off, while others might watch CSGO.
