How do you guys manage a large empire?
I was doing incredibly successfully one game. I vassal'd my neighbouring empire and forced the one beyond them to give me 5/6 of their planets, despite getting bent over backwards by my neighbouring Ascendent Empire. Before the second invasion, I was in the process of integrating my vassals. Once this finished, my whole empire went wild with a -250 energy deficit. Then a whole sector rebelled (my fault for not enslaving them). There are so fucking many negative modifiers on production that I'm not producing anything at all.

I haven't played since this happened, I've been mulling over what to do. I don't really have any other option than to go full purge mode on the planets which rebelled. I already sector'd the excess planets which really sucks to have to do.

In future I guess I'm just going to have to vassal every empire I conquer rather than taking their planets...but this limits me to about 7 planets worth of influence borders to mine resources from. Not to mention having to compete with neighbouring planets for space, with no real way to take it from them without screwing myself over.

>How do you guys manage a large empire
Expand like crazy early game. Your research will take a hit so balance your planet/mine expansion with how fast your population grows. Because you need people to man your planetside facilities.

this. and to add on to this:

>fuck huge fleet because that seems to be the most effective
>causes my game to stutter and the game speed to slow down
>but the calendar moves at a normal rate
>takes months to move across a system let alone a galaxy

it's so frustrating waging war with this fleet, but I can't be arsed to micromanage and build fleets to counter the empire I'm fighting so I have to just use a huge fleet to wage war.

Space Jellies are doing not too bad. Sectors really fuck over your resource production. I fear the AI doesn't build base facilities good enough. No wars yet, just been expanding like crazy.

Only 1 fleet and its pretty shit. I bet if I got into a war right now I'd be crushed.

Don't really know what to do anymore, just kind of cruising along.

Vassals.

Sometimes the enemy you're conquering have such different ethos it's a pain in the ass to cede their planets. Either vassalise or Liberate their planets and then ally or vassalise the new faction that just spawned from Liberating.

Also, power plants. Always power plants.

Bugs, so many bugs
Horrendous UX (leader died on a planet? yeah that's like 5 windows to go through to replace them)
Poor AI
Unbalanced weapons
Sectors are poorly done (spaceports, pop traits/resources, upgrading cap building)
Sectors ruin slavery
Frustrating whack-a-mole space combat
Incomprehensible defender war goals
Defense stations are irrelevant
Federation debacles
Trade?
Interesting diplomacy

But there are a lot of things I do like: lifting races, building robots, modifying genes, and the writing. By far my favorite part of the game has been the writing. It really shines through as the high point of the game, and made playing through the majority of it worth it. However right now I wouldn't recommend it to others.
>>
>>337768494
Similar thing happened to me, luckily enough they only demanded a single planet from me which I had conquered anyway, and I had enough frontier outposts to keep my borders almost the same.

Even if your fleets had not been shit-tier, you would have been crushed, so the best tactic is to not discover them in the first place.
>>
>55 Hours in

I like it, but I think I'll like it more as they add more to it.

I read that reddit list, and agree with everything on it. The game has decent bones. Needs a few fixes here and there, but there's a lot to expand on.

Fleet design doesn't matter just spam corvettes with 2 small plasma and 1 point defense, you can get their evasion up to 80% and weapon mounts that are large than small take a penalty for trying to hit them.

Battleships are optional if you want they buffs they provide.

On a side note the battle AI is coded to target smaller ships first.

ParaJews will release those features to the main game. Then lock everything else that feature requires behind a 14.99 DLC paywall with a 4.99 skin and music pack as a kosher tip.
>>
>Get in an alliance to wipe out the Unbidden.

>Unbidden stop coming anyways.
>Quit caring and use them as a buffer state between my empire and the other half of the galaxy.
Welp. Left that alliance about 3 years after that, since one AI was just declaring war left and right and grabbing all the space. Should've waited until they started a war with another Fallen empire and pulled support right as they started fighting.
>>
>>337771196
Interesting, thank you. Are the evasion buffs purely research or are there other sources? If the AI is coded that way then it makes sense to have some serious heavy hitters behind a swarm of corvettes.

>>337771017
Agreed, there are a lot of issues that just show a clear lack of common sense/effort/time from Paracocks, but the popular opinion seems to be that this will be fixed with DLCs. Still mad that I can't set my science ships to auto-survey/explore.

I'd only take one battleship snare to prevent enemies fleeing and just spam corvettes, the game is broken right now.

8 corvettes = 4 destroyers = 2 cruisers = 1 bb for fleet cap. 8 corvettes will always beat their equal in the shown list.

The downside of corvette fleets are that they need to be constantly replinished. If you are up against a weaker enemy, stronger ships are better because they will simply tank the hits and keep going. Even weak enemies will chunk a good number of your corvettes every engagement.

>>337772367
The only downside of a corvette fleet is you pay slightly higher maintenance overall. Pound for pound corvettes are the best ship in the game after you get all the evasion techs. If this is combined with point defense weapons almost nothing can hit a corvette. Larger ships have shit evasion and armor only reduces damage by %.

Long range weapons are worthless because the AI is shit and just mashes the two fleets together.
>>
>>337772850
I've found the main thing with influence is you just have to make sure you are making enough every month. The main drains are empire wide edicts, which I haven't found to be SUPER useful outside a few research ones, and the MUCH more useful frontier outposts.

Depends on various factors, THOSE will be what will drain you. Make sure to delete them when you don't them and your influence should be okay.

Generally want to stockpile it early before your leaders all start dying on you.,

I feel the game is really boring in the late game. Nothing ever seems to happen unless you make it happen. Combat is really meh. The only "smart" thing the AI does is hit and runs, which don't even help if you have inhibitors.

Even a small understanding of the way ships work allows you to roll over anyone and everything. And then you do all of what exactly?

Sit around and wait for the game to decide you won?

This game really feels limited to me right now. I've played for maybe 10 hours top, so correct me if I'm wrong about anything but here are my complaints so far: Incoming wall of text

There's no religion in the game, despite having spiritualism/materialism ethics. One thing I like to do in Paradox games is play as a certain religion and convert as many people as possible. There doesn't seem to be any sort of existing or custom religions in Stellaris that can spread from people to people. With religion you can strengths/weakness and diplomacy modifiers. But that's all missing in this game.
>>
>>337775228

What? In sins of a solar empire you have no fucking politics at all. You can just shit out units and spread from planet to planet.

Sins isnt even a 4x, its straight up a rts.
>>
>>337775381

see

>>337775326
>>
>>337775415

The politics is weak, especially compared to something like Victoria 2. You can play as a representative democracy, direct democracy, theocracy, whatever, but they seem to have little effect on your overall empire. With a representative democracy, I expect my pops to vote for political parties that then vote on the edicts, policy changes, maybe even war declarations. With direct democracy I expect the individual pops to vote on that themselves. With empires and the like I expect unrest and revolutions. None of that occurs. I noticed there are factions, so maybe revolutions do occur but I didn't get that far.

Some parts of the politics don't even make sense. So my ethics prevent slavery, or purging. But I'd like to enslave aliens to fit my role-playing but I don't want to start over. I have a democracy and one of the candidates mandate is about slavery. So thinking that they'd institute slavery I used influence to get them into office. But I still can't allow slavery. I have no idea how to change the ethics of an empire, but I do know that there is ethic divergence in pops which I think is a great feature, since I think that better reflects the dynamics of culture better than in previous Paradox games. So I’m stuck with my policies because I don’t know how to change the ethics of the empire, yet the people voted in someone with a slavery mandate. It seems to me the ethics of the empire should be determined by the leader voted in by the people, yet this doesn’t happen. I may just not know enough about the mechanics on this one though.

There are few resources and trade is limited. I'd prefer a system like Victoria 2, where there are different resources that are then traded in a market. Maybe that doesn't make sense in a space game where you care less about individual resources and more about the output of the planet, but the energy/minerals is very simple.
>>
>>337775381
seconded, I would like to play this with friends, but they havent played a game of this type and the 40 dollar price tag is a hard sell.
>>
>>337775381

>>
>>337775476

Which brings me to the economy/development. Given how grand scale the game is, I guess you shouldn't go too in depth into the development of individual planets, but the grid system that exists now just doesn't cut it for me. The grid system also vastly limits the way pops are represented in the game since its one pop for one grid. So in an empire spanning star systems I have 50 unique pops. Meanwhile, Victoria 2 you have a huge number of pops within your country with needs, wants, political ideology, economic class, religion, all sorts of things. That level of detail actually gives more personality to your people, whereas in Stellaris the people are just faces on a grid.

Diplomatic options are severely limited. You can trade, ally make war, or vassalize. Federations are an interesting concept but they seem to be nothing more but beefed up alliances with no method of larger integration of the different empires. There’s no trade embargos (because there’s really nothing to trade) no defensive pacts (as a weaker form of alliance) no diplomatic religious mechanic and diplomatic missions seem to be reduced to embassies.

So I created a race of tropical squid people to play with, right? 40 years into the campaign I find this distant planet with a stone-age civ on it. As I take a loser look, I find it's my people. Same tropical preference, same RNG-given stupid name, they're a bit more militaristic than me, that's the only diff. So any ideas what the story is here? Just coincidence or they're my long lost cousins?

>>
>>337774912
No they don't you fucking idiot. You have the image right there, use your one brain.
>>
>>337775536

Finally, the map is just way too small. First contact is treated as some revolutionary thing to your people, but it happens almost immediately with a neighbor right next to you at the beginning. Despite being a galaxy, it seems like you can cover the entire map much quicker than you can in EU4 (although probably not really, it just feels that way). The whole galaxy also fills up with empires in almost no time, meaning that for most of the game, most of space is claimed by some empire.

Some of these problems will be solved by expansions no doubt (like religion or politics possibly) but others are here to stay due to the 4x design. It really disappoints me, because a gsg in space seems like such a cool concept that would allow Paradox to make a game like their others that aren’t tied to history and can truly be sandbox. Instead, the game we got feels way too shallow.

You can build up everything and then check the option to have the AI not change it, but it's still bullshit because if you take control of new space you will immediately be over the limit of planets so you will immediately have to sectorize it.

I don't see why I have to lose control of MY empire to an AI for an arbitrary reason of planet limits. That's fine to have a system of "signing it off" to the AI but it's stupid that you lose control completely in the process.

>Integrate vassal with no problems
>0% happiness on all their pops

Guess you fucks are getting Enslaved
>>
>>337775876
I haven't done this and this is all theoretical, but you can vassalize a nation and then integrate, and then you purge them, removing the xenos. It would then be your territory. From there you have to create sectors to make the AI take control of the planets, removing them from the planet limit. But then there's a limit of sectors....

Honestly the game seems pretty anti-expand and conquer with the planet limit and how clunky taking over another empire is. Which is pretty ridiculous since diplomacy is so shallow so the only fun is to start from nothing and conquer the galaxy.

scout for habitable worlds, a habitable world will do more for you than just straight up mining asteroids for minerals and energy, although that's important too. once you find a habitable world put a frontier outpost there and build a colony ship to colonize it. after your colony is established you can remove the frontier outpost since it costs influence to keep going, once you have a colony your claim is already set.

>you find a habitable world put a frontier outpost
>a habitable world will do more for you than just straight up mining asteroids for minerals and energy

Those are some fucking retarded tips.

You should be focusing on getting some asteroid/planet mines instead of rushing colonization. The more pops you have, the slower your research goes. Research stations are much more valuable in the early game.

Spread you empire thin to get the most area of influence. Don't colonize planets that are too close, set up a perimeter as far as you can and colonize the inner planets later.

Frontier outposts should be used on your frontier, to deny the AI from getting territory from you.

It's early game. You and the AI can only colonize only one type of planet at this point. Don't even make sense to use frontier planets as areas of denial, except in very specific cases.

You're stuck with the worst FTL for the rest of the game, can't tech to jump gates because wormhole onry, can't tech to psi drives because materialist doesn't get psionics.

Funfact, you can tell it to upgrade one single part, pause the game, completely remodel the ships, unpause, and if it's done upgrading it'll have all the new shit for the price of the first upgrade

Every leader. Everyone lives to 120 or so. You can get to 200 with some good choice later on. Saves a whole lot of influence.

Materialist CAN get psionics, you need to get a scientist with psionics.

I can certify it's possible, since one of mine randomly got it levellign up. Sadly it was very early in the game and she died before i reached the point where psionics can happen

I know but getting a scientist with psionic is rare as shit.
The best solution is to just be a good goy and pick memeholes like everyone else and move up to jump drives.
