Wrong on all counts.
CT is good, but that's all it is. Lufia II, Terranigma, and FF5 shit all over it. Even Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario are better experiences. Star Ocean is better than CT, Tales of Phantasia is better than CT.
CT is overrated as hell because the typical JRPG fan hasn't ventured outside of the Squaresoft bubble.

I won't deny that SMRPG is overrated, it is. I still find it to be a better game than CT.

You know mother 3 technically also has better gameplay with the comboing system and emphasis on buffs and debuffs in boss battles but still it comes down to preference. Don't remember hearing this before, but there's enough people in the world...
I still like both though. I think the reason I prefer 3 is for its characters. 2 has a diverse party and it's very easy to fill in details that are left out but Mother 3's characters are the most defined part of the game, and it leads to really memorable characters like Fassad or Kumatora.
I think the best example of this is the game's equivalent to Magicant, Tanetane Island, and how rather than exploring the protag's mind you get insight on all three of your human party members.

I absolutely love mother 3's main cast. I love how unstereotypical they were and how they never felt forced. Lucas was gentle and emotional but still brave and heroic, or kumatora being tough and crude but never an asshole or being a romantic interest. Also love Duster being "plain looking" where so many other jrpgs have pretty boys as your party. I think some people like making the personalities for the cast of 2 but I feel 3 had the perfect balance of given personality and leaving it up to interpretation. Sorry for the splerging but I love them.
