Sup /v/. I'm looking for the most cliche, generic jrpg out there. Got any suggestions?

Final Fantasy IV
>>
>>337750802
Does it really count if it invented most of the tropes that make JRPGs today cliche?

I'd say Bravely Default, if only because it basically prides itself on being as generic as possible, with some god awful ironic writing thrown into the mix.
>>
>>337750802
>Class change as part of the story
>Every character has unique abilities
>Main character is an adult man
>Main character has a wife from the beginning of the game
>You best wife is in love with your wife
>There are three different spaceships
>There are three world maps
>You go to the moon
>2/3 of the party members are temporary

You can go a lot more generic than this

any ongoing weebshit series ever. stuff like atelier, tales of, neptunia. don't listen to their fans, as they are all pathetic virgins who only play those series for the hentai.

this isn't bait btw. honest opinion.
>>
Op again. These all seem right up my alley. Help me choose between them. I enjoyed the crap out of Final Fantasy IV and Tales of Phantasia, if you want a reference
Lunar the Silver Star
Legend of Dragoon
Dragon Quest 8
Skies of Arcadia
Breath of Fire III
Phantasy Star IV
>>
>>337750481
The Legend of Dragoon is about as generic, boring and mediocre as a jrpg gets.

Tales of Graces is pretty generic..in fact, it is THE most generic rpg I've played but I enjoyed the shit out of it
>>
>>337752490
Eh, it was new ground for writing in the genre, or the medium as a whole.

In terms of gameplay, yeah, it's as boring as they come, and I personally am not a fan of the story or the characters, but it stands out for it's design and storytelling nonetheless.
>>
>>337752157
Everything in that list is good except Dragoon.

If you're looking for the most bog-standard traditional one, it's either DQVIII or BoFIII.

>Dragon Quest 1

Yeah, but it's essentially the template. I'd sooner say Final Fantasy I is generic for essentially copy-pasting the template.

In fact, I'll say it. Final Fantasy I is the most generic JRPG, maybe even game, in existence.
>>
>>337752614
ATB and positioning being essential for some moves makes different than most JRPGs. So I don't know what you're talking about.
>>
>2016
>people pretend DQ1 is still an enjoyable experience

Be realistic. Even when it was new it wasn't very good. It was just something different.

There's no reason these days for people to start with DQ before III.
>>
Breath of Fire III.

I love the shit out of it, but it's cliche as fuck. It's got your simple turn-based battle system, most of your party are teenagers, you've got your cute merchandising companion, and you kill god at the end of the game.
>>
Golden Sun
>>
>>337750481
Most modern JRPGs besides a few (Persona for example). Tales of..., Neptunia, Fairy Fencer F, etc. The list goes on.
>>
>>337751007
Most of IV's cliches came from Star Wars.
>>
>>337753162
FF1 isn't that generic. It has a lot of cool stuff like time travel, time loop, time reset, high technology in a true fantasy setting (By which I mean not a "mid-point between fantasy and sci-fi" like other JRPGs do it, in FF1 there's a real contrast between the fantasy elements and the sci-fi elements). It also had a unique charge system instead of MP, and rather than having pre-defined characters or a job system, it makes you pick generic jobs at the start and you're stuck with them for the whole game.

>>337753315
DQ1 is still enjoyable because it's so short and small, it's like a JRPG snack, you can finish it in an afternoon.

Are there even any generic JRPGs? Wouldn't it really depend on what JRPG you played first?

Trails of Cold Steel
You play as an teenage katana school kid with a mysterious power to turn his hair white and pupils red who is chosen as the leader of his class in a """""military"""""" academy and must stop terrorists from doing bad things by summoning your robot that you're chosen to pilot with.
>>
>>337753938
It actually hadn't occurred to me until I thought about it for the OP, but if you're new to JRPGs, none of it should be generic.
>>
>>337752929
Hello
>>
Dragon Quest
>>
>>337753162
>FF1 just copy/pasted DQ1

This meme needs to die.

>team of 4 rather than 1 hero
>multiple enemies in fights
>system for learning magic is different
>third person battle perspective instead of first
>didn't need to go through a menu to do literally anything
>character class selection with rank up
>different stat growth system

To name a few.

It is true that FF1 is more generic, but that's because more games decided to copy the improved FF template than the DQ one.

DQ1 gets more credit than it deserves. FF is what most retro jrpgs wanted to be.

Oh well, PS1 was better than both.
>>
>>337754196
When modern RPGs are stuff like Tales of, Kiseki, FFXV, Neptunia, Atelier... Dragon Quest actually becomes not generic. Sometimes I really just want to be an adventurer fighting skeletons in caves.

Dragon quest I-III are great generic jrpgs. Final fantasy IV and golden sun also generic but not really good games. I would also argue persona 3 and 4 but those are in terms of anime and not fantasy storytelling.
>>
>>337750481
Neptunia
They're generic in the sense as in they're all literally the exact same game
Even Call of Duty changes more of its formula up than the Neptunia franchises
>>
Never played DQ but I'm under the assumption that the story is just a generic quest to slay a dragon. How does a simple story like that stretch out to over 100 hours in DQ7 from what I heard?

>>

for all the wrong reasons that when they were making the remake and replayed the game, the director flipped some shit
>>
Literally any dragon quest.
>>
Are there any other JRPGs out there that ACTUALLY copy the Dragon Quest formula? It's my favorite JRPG series and other JRPGs don't please me. They often have too much focus on story, too linear, too much gimmick in their battle system to make up for the lack of anything else, too easy to require any money/item/MP management, etc.
>>
>>337755263
Is my assumption also wrong that DQ7 is long because you're sent on different dungeons to collect macguffins that is needed to slay final boss because story reasons?
>>
>>337755358
if you mean games that feel the same, then that's a really hard question

the only games that come to mind when it comes to world building and charm aren't even JRPGs

Have you tried the mother series? Those are very inspired by dragon quest.
>>
>>337750481
If it weren't for a few extra mechanics that end up making a big difference I'd say Pokemon Ran/Blue tbhfam.
>>
>>337755480
that is true for the last third of the game when you have to recruit the elemental spirits
>>
>>337755480
What kind of criticism is that? Might as well say "Is the game long because it has dungeons"? Like no shit it's long because it has content. You're wrong anyway about items needed to beat the final boss.
>>
>>337755589
>>337755668
I'm not a fan of the modern setting tough.

Mother 3's setting isn't really "modern" but not really "fantasy" either. It mixes both and comes off as unique so maybe look into that.
>>
>>337756286
Mother 3 also doesn't really have the DQ style battle system so it's not a good comparison anyway.
>>
>>337752157
Legend of Dragoon is really just the word "JRPG" in big bold flaming letters. I love that game but it was very standard. Excellent game and it did standard very, very well, but standard.
>>
>>337756483
What makes you say that? Take away the dial health and rhythm comboing and you got dragon quest basically. I see what your saying though, in terms of combat mother 1 really is a dragon quest clone.

Not really though. It's pretty sub-par.

It's one step above Beyond the Beyond.
>>

>>
>>337757978
Atelier games usually come in trilogies. You can tell what trilogy a game is in by its subtitle (Except Iris where they were all called Iris but numbered)
Arland trilogy: Rorona -> Totori -> Meruru -> Rorona's postgame
Dusk trilogy: Ayesha -> Escha Logy -> Shallie
Atelier Sophie is coming out soon and that's the start of a new trilogy.
>>
>>337751763
Go play Symphonia, the 3 hours take that spot and secure it for generations
>>
>>337758464
Now senpai, which trilogy do you consider the best?
>>
Almost every game named in this thread does a few stuff unique enough to make it stand apart.
Dragon Quest 1, on the other hand, is THE generic JRPG. It's LITERALLY nothing more than a quest to slay a dragon, with pretty much every dungeons being a cave.
Even the Dragon Quest sequels are at least "Dragon Quest +" so they're less generic.
>>
>>337758482
The Tales series died years ago, everything it came after Eternia was mediocre or bad.
>>
>>337758574
I've only played Arland, so I can't talk about Dusk. I can say that Rorona is average at best, but also a good tutorial for the rest of the series, so if you go with that one first and find it a bit too restricted in freedom/pace/scope, keep in mind that the other games are bigger than that. I've heard some of the Dusk games dropped the time limit and are closer to regular JRPGs if you prefer that style.
>>
>>337758707
everything until Xillia is fine, really. i was just saying Symphonia has way more cliches than graces
>>
>>337752157
Phantasy Star IV or Dragon Quest VIII. All of the games you mentioned are great, but those are the best.
>>
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is the correct answer
