What happened to colorful worlds and quirky characters? Was it just a phase? Will it ever come back and will have it the same imaginative charm as before?

Is Splatoon not colorful enough for you? You literally paint the walls and floors of the stages.

Companies like Naughty Dog and EA have taught the masses that being "mature" makes better games and more money, even though half the charm of mascot games is that they don't need money to be fun. Everyone likes to pretend that it was just a phase, but the truth is we wouldn't even have the industry we have now if it weren't for these dudes jumping on platforms. Until everyone realizes that someone somewhere can make a good 3D platformer again, they won't become popular again, much to my chagrin.

There are still a few out there. One that comes to mind, which is not very good is called FreezeMe.

The genre is not as big as open-world GTA-likes or tacticool FPS nowadays though.

What do you think it is, a collectathon?
A collectathon is a sub genere of videogames
A collectathon can be a platformer, or fps, or what ever. It's just a more specific classification
