Fire/Ground is only weak to two types (yes yes 4x weak to Water but that's not as bad as Fighting or Rock).
Fire/Ground as a dual stab hits a little under half of all Pokemon for super effective damage.
On an actually fast attacker, this is a great typing. It's like Ice/Rock, except exponentially better.
I was expecting Popplio to evolve into some sea spirit type thing and be part fairy.

Oshawott is the most practical to use in-game in BW1 because it takes a long while before you get any other good Water types while it throws really good Grass and Fire types at you fairly early on, BW2 it's still the most useful of the three for typical in-game but there are other good choices for Water-types early on. Of course though, it's in-game, so you can really just use whatever you want with zero issue bar a few exceptions.
Snivy is the best in competitive, but you need its Hidden Ability for it to be useful at all, which isn't actually available in BW/BW2.

Surf and Scald are the 3rd and 5th most popular attacks on winning teams. (SR is 1st, EQ is 2th, and Taunt is 4th).
A 4x weakness to Water is the 2nd worse weakness in the metagame, only beaten by a 4x weakness to Ground.
Only Heatran and Magnezone are in OU and have a 4x weakness to Ground, and they both have tons of resistances and an immunity to make up for it (Heatran has 9 resistances and Magnezone has 11, both of them with resistances to Ice, Dragon, Psychic, and the latter to Rock).
Fire/Ground gets resistances to a mere 5 types and one immunity, none of which are terribly common offensive choices (Fire's a passable offensive typing, but it doesn't even scratch the top 5).
As a result, Fire/Ground can switch into pretty much NOTHING, and it has a 4x weakness to a type with a priority move (Aqua Jet).
Fire/Ground is not a good typing at all.

Ground by itself is perfectly fine. The Flying immunity keeps it's advantage against Electric and Steel in check.
No, the main problem with Ground isn't itself, but rather EQ. It's still, to this fucking day, the only widespread 100/100 move with no drawbacks. If EQ was 90 base power, a lot of OHKO's would turn into 2HKO and a few 2HKO's into 3HKO's, and Ground would probably be the 5th or even 6th strongest offensive type instead of the 2nd (or arguably 1st) best.
Water's a mistake. It needs some kind of negative interaction with Poison in order to balance it properly.

No, there's a reason shit like Soak and Forest's Curse are never used. A quick switch does away with the type change. Even if it didn't, almost no Poison types can capitalize on an opponent's type switch from Water to Poison. The only ones that actually could make use of it, Gliscor and Venusaur, would switch out immediately and have better things to do, respectively.
