Execution animations are kinda like "teleporty" for lack of better term, but it's a compromise with speed, I'd rather teleport to my target and kill him in a second, than have an animation of myself walking up to him and killing him for 2 or 3 seconds.
The pre-reviews on Metacritic say that the game is decent at times, this will warrant a score of 80-90 for most critics.

I get why they're in the game. It's so that you can still get killed fast in high difficulties, without having regenerating armor or forcing you to double back all the fucking time. They're a pretty good way of finishing off low enemies and there's also some fun challenges to complete involving them, like killing Hell Knights from above and shit like that. Those challenges require some planning so it's not bad. Also, my favorite nuance is that it means that if you want to get health from an enemy and you're kinda low, you need to hit them a bit more "sparingly" so you don't blow them the fuck up and aren't able to get glory kills. I don't mind this mechanic, though I do wish that there was a weapon you could use instead of it, it's fast enough and it's actually mechanically sound and fits really well with the game's design of GET THE FUCK IN THERE AND FIGHT THOSE DEMONS, as it forces you to get up close to what you're fighting to get some pick ups.

You can dodge around these demons all day long while they barely move two feet before you take 3 seconds to line up an easy shotgun shot.
