I used to play the crap out of IL2 Forgotten Battles. I was pretty good on the Ubi servers but I never tried the Hyperlobby ones. I keep trying to convince my brothers and friends to play so I can have a LAN match but it seems people are more into action games for some reason.

A-10 Cuba! It was pretty impressive for 1996. I still enjoy playing it and it still has charm even though it has obviously been surpassed by DCS.
It easily had the best ground handling physics of the time and even surpassed most racing sims.
>>
>>337714086
I need to get a decent control setup going. Part of what helped me do well in dogfights was force feedback. I could really feel where the plane was in a turn based on the flutter effects. Now that there's nothing with force feedback I feel handicapped.

That's depressing. Flight sims used to be the most popular genre for PC. Now it's a just a tiny niche with little mainstream support.
>>
>>337717018
its basically impossible to produce a mainstream flight sim, because flying is hard. you can go the il2 route and include an arcadey option to snag wart hunter players, but ultimately it will always be a niche hobby

really the only difference is that PCs used to also be a niche hobby

According to that one guy on /simg/ that played DCS with the Occulus, it's actually perfect for cockpit use. It's everything outside the cockpit that's the problem.

Has anyone played the Flight Unlimited games? Best looking pc game of 1995 and a really good flight model too. Not even my 300mhz K6-2 with 64 megs of ram could max it.

>>337719076
Then whoever is in charge of procurement for that was a bit of an idiot for not buying a hotas that was literally designed for the a-10c
>>
>>337719261
It doesn't really matter to be perfectly honest, these are guys that are literally going to be using the real thing. They're not dumb enough that the buttons being slightly different is going to be an issue. If you want an a-10 hotas for your simulation roleplay accuracy then go for it bud, but it serves very little training functionality.

Falcon BMS if you actually care about realism and don't care if there's only one plane to fly.

DCS if you want aircraft variety and don't mind some pretty borked mechanics or are simply new to the genre.

IL2 Battle of Stalingrad if you want WW2.

Rise of Flight if you want WW1
>>
>>337720081
Combat or civilian?
DCS is the best for modern combat. Il2 1946 is a good for old-school dogfighting. The newer ones take some modding to be acceptable simulators and they never seem to go below 30 bucks on sale.

I guess it would be either X-Plane or FSX for civilian but I'm not sure which.

>>337720523
I haven't tried Falcon yet and Rise of Flight is the only game in town for a ww1 sim but I think WW2 is more interesting and has more variety if you're starting out in flight sims.
>>
>>337720523
il2 BoS has shitty reviews, is it actually any good?
>>
>>337720523
What's borked about DCS?
>>
>>337720753
It was pretty broken on release. I think it's ok with mods. CoD was the same story and with mods pretty much everything was fixed, other than the shitty, jerky control animations.
>>
>>337719261
I used to play Flight Unlimited 3 all the time, trying to fly by Bill Gates house
>>
>>337720871
Quite a bit, especially if you count Flaming Cliffs with its simplified flight models. Other than that, Missiles are modeled poorly, the distance scaling for plane models isn't great, comms aren't modeled realistically and the single-player content is abysmal.

Falcom BMS does all of those things a lot better, albeit only with the F-16, so it's the go-to sim if you actually care about realism.
>>
>>337718860
They had me use a A-10 HOTAS for the ASTB when I applied for the Navy. Most sims are done in full visual cockpit sims or instrument trainer cockpits. No idea what these guys are doing in this picture.>>337718523

>I haven't tried Falcon yet and Rise of Flight is the only game in town for a ww1 sim but I think WW2 is more interesting and has more variety if you're starting out in flight sims.

Rise of Flight has one of the largest rosters of any combat flight sim I've seen, and the difference between planes is sometimes pretty phenomenal.

Comparatively, by WW2 planes were far more standardized in terms of cockpit layout and handling and feel a lot more similar on a case by case basis. The difference between an Eindecker, a Dr. 1, and say a Spad-XIII is far greater than the difference between a P51 and a FockeWulf imo!

I remember playing one called Warbird.

>>337723583
the weird control surfaces and power to weight ratios are unlike any other flight sim i've played, you can do some really wacky stuff in those old planes. the Dr. 1 can prophang like a helicopter for what feels like ages and if you're slick on the rudder and blipswitch you can practically spin it around like a top
>>
>>337723583
>>337723232
It's a fine sim and I enjoy playing it occasionally. I just think they are all pretty slow and underpowered compared to ww2 so the dogfights aren't as exciting. Your options are also pretty limited in ground attack and there is obviously no naval carrier action. It's all pretty much limited to the northern European theatre.

once you realize that altitude is energy your dogfights are as exciting as you want them to be

Is the Thrustmaster Flight Hotas Stick X any good? It's around 50 bucks, which is an amount I won't feel bad about spending even if it turns out I don't like flying after all. Most important is planes, stuff that comes with the sim isn't that great (Aerosoft A320 is what I'm flying)
After that, Active Sky for weather, REX for better textures/clouds, any airports that you fly from often, Orbx stuff for nicer scenery.
Most of this stuff is pirateable too, if you're not comfortable spending literally hundreds on it
