6s makes sense from a class role view. The mobile attack classes skirmish on mid, then the pick classes are brought out on second to break stalemates, then the defense classes come out to hold last. There's nothing wrong with that. Having a heavy or engineer at mid not only doesn't make sense but it also slows the game down to a crawl and its not fun to play or watch. there's nothing wrong with items that change how classes play, the problem here was that they added item that superficially or just plain stupidly changed how the classes played
there's basically not a single item which changes the classes as drastically as two different heroes in overwatch or to use a reference within TF2 itself, as different as two classes
the game turned into a clusterfuck of poorly balanced alternate weapons with stupid effects like "+30% damage against airborne targets but -20% clip size"

I feel like they could completely fix facestabs by making the back angle 135 degrees instead of 180. It makes it more open and less fidgetty than the backburner but prevents people from using small model incongruities to run up to someone and "backstab" them while they're staring them down.
On the other hand the spy's already a fucked class due to anybody who's got any sort of intelligence spychecking everyone all the time, and also the continued presence of the C&D means that they clearly just do not give a fuck about the spy or his balance issues or the work that'd be required to fiddle with him, when they can just give the soldier another rocket launcher and the demoman another sword and call it a day.
