I am absolutely baffled by the fact that people literally "donate" hundreds of $$$ to youngsters sitting at home playing video games. By putting on a fake personality and feigning intimacy streamers manage to rein in countless followers over to their channel. Overtime the regular viewers start to develop a pseudo-relationship with the gamer and consider him/her to be their friend. Eventually this begins a cycle of steady cash flow in which the most loyal followers attempt to prove their devotion by sending in the most money so that their name might get listed in the top rankings. Keep in mind that this 'entertainment' is free for everyone. Yet numerous individuals can't help but hand over their hard earned cash to these entitled unemployed millennials .

How did we manage to come to this point?

Can this ever be stopped?

You don't actually contribute to this nefarious system do you /v/?

>>

Its watever people are free to do wat they want with their money.
>>
>>337691068

The principal is basically the same as going to a strip club if you're not getting sex from the strippers. You go there, give them money, they give you attention. If they aren't giving you attention then at least you're sitting back and enjoying the show. They might say something to you or something and that might be exciting but otherwise people are just donating because they enjoy the entertainment. Its not really a new concept. To say that its a scam is retarded because nobody is forcing them to give them money. Its just a newly discovered entertainment outlet and people are exploiting it.
>>
Shit like this makes me lose faith in humanity and I dread for what is to come. One twitch user was exposed after having faked a disability to gain viewers, claiming to be paralyzed from the waist down. The guy just stood up during one of his sessions and forgot that the cam was running. Needless to say the fraud had earned thousands of dollars before twitch banned his account. It's funny how his gf notices his fuck up and immediately begins her pathetic damage control in an attempt to distract his viewers. Goes to show how retarded these streamers think their followers really are. Unfortunately this is not an isolated case. Link Provided.

You hit the nail on the head really, they are exploiting the types of people who play games by offering them psuedo-friendship. I think it is similar to people who leave to TV on so that they don't feel alone.
>>
Beware, a lot of those donations are fake. People see the fake donations, they assume that they are real, and think that it's a good idea for themselves to donate.

Jesus, you fucking loser
>>
I pay money to subscribe to streamers and get excited when they take 3 seconds to acknowledge and thank me while faking graditutde and then promptly forget about me. It makes me feel important when someone popular and well liked talks to me
>>
Well, when you can't even get a job in fast food anymore, what else are you going to do?

http://www.investors.com/politics/policy/wendys-serves-up-kiosks-as-wages-rise-hits-fast-food-group/

People have been throwing money at human pets for centuries. We just broadened the skillset from "pretend to enjoy having sex with me" to "let me watch you play video games."
>>
People tend to tip if they feel like they got a good entertainment value. It's a performance. It's like throwing a couple bucks in some street performers guitar case as you walk by. The people that tip also tend to get many hours of entertainment.
People get to do what they want with their hard earned money.
>>
>>337693120
But giving beggars money is stupid. Give street beggars food or something, if you give them money they'll just spend it on booze.

Not him, but I think it's an opportunity cost thing. You COULD spend your $20 smile money on something for yourself (games, nice meal, save for better stuff, etc) or give it to someone who actually needs money and it would make them happy (charity). But you give it to people who don't really need it.

But whatever floats your boat. It's essentially entertainment, just a different version of it that I don't really understand.
>>
>>337691068
Aren't streamers just entertainers but instead of being on stage, they sit at home and play games?

Not that I pay for that but it can be entertaining
>>
>>337693490
>You COULD spend your $20 smile money on something for yourself
But I am. I give it to someone who gets happy and smiles for me, which in turn makes me happy. It's a win-win situation. Hell I don't even like to play video games, I'd rather watch cute girls play them so if I can donate money to streamers so THEY can play more games it gives ME more happiness at the same time. Again, win-win.

The thing is that no streamer in existence owns up to the fact that he/she doesn't give a single fuck about anyone watching. Instead when someone joins in they make it like some sort of a ritual in which a new member is being inducted into the community. It's the general facade overlaying everything that gives twitch a sort of devious aspect. Furthermore... twitchers... grill gamers especially have a 'wishlist' in which they mention things that they'd like for their followers to buy for them. The items range from plush toys to engagement rings worth thousands of dollars.

There are cases like the guy who pretended to be a cripple then got caught, but usually when people throw money at some streamer making her tits jiggle on camera they already know they're getting nothing more than a vague warm fuzzy feeling out of it so it doesn't make sense to call it a scam

I don't know. I just wanted to watch some top streamer play Doom and they were so bad at streaming I was looking for viewbots in chat.

95% of 0 viewer streams are better than that guy. The other 5% have no mic.

I don't donate, subscribe or any of that. It's very simple: There are many games that i don't buy because i'm very picky, and also i don't like to waste my money unless i'm 100% sure that it's a good investment. So i watch streams, that makes it much easier to evaluate a game. Also sometimes after a long day, when i'm too tired to do anything productive, i watch streams that have less viewers and you can have actual discussion in the chat.

This is another thing, if you're watching streams with a ton of viewers like AGDQ or Siglemic the chat tends to be pure noise but on a channel with only a couple dozen people watching it the atmosphere in the chat tends to be much more pleasant and easier to keep up with

I don't donate or subscribe to anybody, but I watch a lot of streams because it's free, unadulterated looks at gameplay, which was incredibly rare before Twitch came around. No more bullshots or pre-rendered trailers to base a purchasing decision off. Twitch is as cringeworthy as every but if you stick to smaller channels it's tolerable, plus any revenue that doesn't go to some faggot SJW's blog is fine by me.

People in this day and age are far, far too easily convinced to give away their money. It's absolutely stupid. I know a girl who regularly complains about not having money for food, but just last week she donated her entire paycheck to some band she likes.

And a bit at work I know has issues paying rent, and didn't have the money to pay for an expedited passport when he needed it. Yet he talks about buying expensive watches and the Oculus.

My parents taught me the value of being frugal I suppose. I get worried I'm spending too much if my bank account drops below 20k.

Real fuckin tired of this e-begging bullshit people do as well, with Gofundme and shit. I've seen a girl beg for money for college, some mom beg for money for her kids bike, and a girl beg for money for a car. It's fucking disgusting. Even if I was dying in a ditch, I'd never stoop that low

Which is fine, people do what they enjoy the most. Some people prefer to play a game and leave it like that, others play a game and then watch someone else play it and others just enjoy watching someone play a game. All three are very different experiences but should all be acknowledged as enjoyable, there is no winner since it's all preference.

A pyramid scheme is a scam because the money is not given by the person being ripped off for no reason, they're giving money because they think it's an investment. They are promised something in return, usually profit.

I'm sorry, do Twitch streamers have a banner saying "If you donate $5 to me, you'll get $20 back!"? There's no promise of anything in return, which is why it's a DONATION, and not an INVESTMENT or a PURCHASE.

35 here. Remember when we were too young to be considered GenX so they called us Gen Y? Then later, before the term millenial came around, we were considered Gen X for a little while?
Now we get lumped in with millenials, which is weird to me, because I'm old enough to be most millenial's dad.
It's ok tho, I can reclaim my Gen X status any time just by talking about how pure music was in the 90's, how great grunge rock was, and how the internet used to be a fantastical wild west show before corporate interests ruined it.

Maybe a different insight, or just something to watch. There's more than one way to enjoy things. I usually watch lets plays of games I've played to see what the player thinks of it and what he does differently.

I also watch lets plays of games I don't own and probably don't want to buy, or games I played back when I was a kid that I simply can't get anymore without fucking around with emulators.

>>337691068
No one is putting a gun to their head and forcing them to donate. I'd probably never donate to a lets player. If you do, and complain about it afterwards you should be removed from the genepool, especially if the streamer is a woman playing a popular game poorly.

I don't really stream any games. I just play D&D with friends. Honestly if you want to get big enough to make a living off of it you'll have to go full sellout mode and stream the extremely popular flavor of the week stuff. You can build up a following playing older or more obscure games but it's rare and will take much longer. You'll need to facecam most likely, and make sure you video and audio are top notch. That's probably the biggest deterrent, I'll watch a smaller streamer before some giant cuckold but not if he's running something on his toaster and it sounds like he's in a cave when he speaks.

>>
>>337702039
Make sure you never have 0 viewers and you'll be fine. Starting out is hard so I recommend you to use your laptop/cellphone with your stream on just to have that one viewer.
The rest will come naturally and you need to learn to talk without talking to someone
>>
>>337704175
So you mean just commentate everything as if I had viewers, if I don't have any? I guess then when people join they are more likely to stick.
>>
>>337703663
It really depends what you stream.

I know a lot of people who just stream Hearthstone because it lets them technically have a video game up, but they just sit around and talk with their people in chat. Being engaging and entertaining is key, but it's hard to stand out in a lot of videogames because there's so many people streaming that standing out will be impossible.

You want people to stick around? Be funny, witty, fun to listen to, or talk to your chat. Involve them in some way, give them something to do. I wouldn't suggest getting into streaming to TRY and get popular, rather, get into it because you love the game(s) you play and want to entertain, and people will eventually come.

Promotion is key though.
>>
>>337704339
Exactly! People don't want to watch some silent guy play a game, talking constantly is hard, but there's a constant chance someone will see your stream and enjoy what they're watching
>>
>>337704339
>So you mean just commentate everything as if I had viewers, if I don't have any?
Yes, this is actually a pretty big thing. Even when you have no one in chat, you need to ACT like you do. It's weird and awkward, but when people join to see what's going on, if they see you just silently staring at the screen, they'll get bored and leave.

And don't say "Hi <person>" as soon as you see their name pop up in the viewer list. Calling them out when they join won't get them to stick around and talk.

Streaming is about putting on a show. You have to be willing and able to entertain people for them to give you their time.
>>
>>337704405

Most likely, but check how many viewers are watching those games at peak times among all channels.

>I'm Diamond in League and Gladiator in WoW
League is the most saturated game on the planet, so getting anywhere doing that is literally impossible. WoW is probably long since dead so I doubt anyone would watch it, though I know a lot of popular streamers mix it in.

Again, I wouldn't really suggest video games at all. I stream live D&D, and I'm 10x as successful as if I were to ever try streaming video games, just because the market is not completely saturated yet.
>>
I had to stop doing on-call video game testing gigs for more regular work, and I miss that level of interaction with people and video games. It's nice that I work regularly now and don't have to worry so much about money, but now life feels pretty empty without people to share my hobby with. Being a streamer gives me that back and on a more personal level. Since I don't have to worry about money, I don't have to take off my pants whenever someone follows, or kill time promoting my channel, etc.

Just to give some input, I only watch a single LPer and some playthroughs of games difficult or impossible to emulate.

The LPer is chill, fun to watch without being cringy and plays mostly non-mainstream games. He doesn't accept donations, either, just Twitch subscriptions. He makes some great background noise for grinding or even just watching when I'm too tired to play my own vidya.

I have never subscribed to his Twitch, but I'm considering it just because I really enjoy his shit. He even tries to discourage his viewers from doing so, assuring them that they won't get shit for it. But I mean, I've spent way more on more worthless shit anyway.

it's not just the people forking over the dosh that are in denial about it. i have a friend that is into this streaming bullshit and she's in total denial that she is a camwhore, even though it's exactly the same. lonely men are paying her for special attention and so she will pretend to be their friend and add them to her discord chat. i don't really care, yeah it's disgusting and embarrassing but as long as men are easily manipulated into doing this shit it's not stopping.

It's not a scam. No one holds a gun to their head and forces them to donate. People just like giving tips for entertainment.

You faggots need to stop getting mad just because people found an easy way to get cash.

I was thinking about making a video game youtube channel. Not for money but just because I want to talk about video games. Not sure if I should do that or just make some blog in wordpress ir something. I just want people to see what I have to say!

So you fell for the twitch streamer specifically tailored to cater to hipsters like yourself. Are you proud or something?
