When I open Luma, it reboots me back into the SysNAND home screen instead of RedNAND.
Some guy told me to go into the luma config menu and check off a couple of things since it worked for him and I tried that and it didn't work.
/hbg/ has refused to answer me on this so my only choice is to ask you guys.
I downgraded my N3DS to 9.2 but now I have to install more shit to play the decrappified version of Fates. I'm too fucking lazy to do it.

There are several versions available. An undub version is available but it still has censorship. An uncensored fan translation is available but the supports and some other things are untranslated.
As long as your 3ds is hacked you can play any version you find online. I went with the regular US version, but then changed my mind and got the uncensored fan translation.
Don't bother getting a program that patches it on the fly, the ROMs that are available are pre-patched.

What's the point of this shit? It has a SNES emulator that doesn't work, a GBA emulator that doesn't work and a shitty minecraft knock off.
I have, on my old as fuck 2011 launch 3DS, I kind of want to get an N3DS soon though. Hopefully I get one pre-11.0, since I can OOThack.

It's better because it auto-boots into CFW when you turn the power on, no need to fuck with the homebrew menu. It's a deeper hack.
The only cons that I can think of is that it takes quite a bit of time investment to install and you can't boot the system without the SD card inserted, which are barely cons at all.

a9lh essentially re-inserts a very low level hack that was present in early firmwares, and luma write-protects it so that it can never be written over (although a few other cfws have or will be adding this feature). This lets you run a fully updated sysnand that will always be hacked. The exploit also runs so early, it can even be used to undo bricks to a system you can't otherwise get into. So no dicking around juggling between synand and emunand, no double-installing stuff like gba games, 100% boot rate, etc.
The only downside is that it takes a bit more investment to install, but there's a 6 page step-by-step guide that's idiot proof as long as you follow it exactly.

I'd recommend getting a 2DS for like $60 or whatever. The ones that come with Mario Kart, those have a really low firmware. From there, you can just convert your own roms into CIA files or just ask someone on 3DSiso to do it for you.
This way you can play all of FE: Fates without having to shell out a bit over $100.
The 3DS cia files all have online capabilities, but I wouldn't recommend connecting to wifi on it. Nothing crazy has happened yet, but better safe than sorry.

I was talking about the homebrew emulator, dunno the name, but whatever. I have a gateway and gba cias just doesn't work. I install them and they don't run, they just freeze and don't boot.
My excuse is I don't want to play any 3ds games I don't already own bad enough to spend any money at all on SD cards and shit. If there was no hack available I wouldn't spend a dime on any of these games anyway so I don't see why I should pay anything to play them.

Well, for me, the GBA emulator runs really fucking slow, but I account that to the system running an emulation on top of an emulation. I also for some reason can't get VC games to work either. I tried downloading Minish Cap or Metroid Fusion and neither one would boot up, it just hanged at the black screen.

People use emunand for 2 reasons. First, updating sysnand loses your hack entrypoint, and if you get a brick by fucking with your firmware cia files or something there's no way to do anything about it other than a hard mod. With a9lh, neither of these things are a problem anymore.
That said, if you want to be really safe you can still set up an emunand/rednand and set your CFW to boot into that instead of sysnand.
