I was always thinking that games get boring mainly because I got old. But when I play older classic games, I instantly like them and can spend hours and hours playing like before. From time to time, very rarely, I get the same feeling with a new one as well.
Thus, I think that gaming went to shit mostly and that growing old is of smaller issue in this matter.

This. I watched a middle schooler I was babysitting playing Smash 4 on his 3ds the other day. He was fighting a level 1 CPU as Link, and just walking up and forward tilting the CPU over and over and over until 4 stocks went by.

Fortunatley for you, subbed Japanese is completely fine. The "I can't read subs and watch the action at the same time" excuse has no tangible basis since most of the dialogue happens during scenes with hardly any combat. Even in combat scenes, the action stops when characters start talking.
