Has a game ever made you feel bad for your actions?

Some games have pulled it nicely, like The Sorrow from MGS3. I haven't seen a lot of games that can be subtle enough to make it feel seamless.
>>
At the end of Mass Effect 1 I felt bad for choosing the Renegade ending.
>>
>kill someone with the fork
>see the ghost of that same dude
>he yells "don't eat me!"
It made me laugh more than anything.

I remember feeling bad in mass effect 2 when I decided to fuck around and not save my crewmembers asap, making you have to watch them get horribly killed off right in front of you

I can't think of any.

Dishonored maybe? But not really. Was one of the more recent games I've played that had consequences on the people around for how I behaved somewhat. Finding people as...Weepers I think they were called. That old man who sold me useless shit also turning into one because I poisoned the elixir still and shit.

But yeah no not really. Even Fable 3 where you literally break every promise and disable your conscience by turning orphanages into brothels, draining lakes and turning other empires into slaves...it's just a game

..in fact these days I tend to take pleasure in the ham-fisted shitty acting that follows as you do crazy shit...like in Hitman

Dark Souls 1 had a moment where a friendly NPC asks you where ou got your rare Pyromancy spell from, so I told him.

Later went exploring in Blighttown and found him hollowed (Zombified) cause he couldn't find the merchant who sold them.

Made me feel like shit for a while cause literally every time you help someone in that game, it screws them over and leads to their deaths/hollowing.

Pretty much any game with semi-competent writing and a moral choice that isn't clear-cut that one is better or worse

For example I most definitely did not feel bad playing Fire Emblem Fates and kind of wish Conquest was full evil psycho route because the writing was so shit anyways

As a kid, yeah.
Releasing a pokemon or a chao was painful.
The fact that I knew they were just 1's and 0's only made it worse, since it meant they were completely and utterly erased from existence the moment I pressed the button, rather than possibly going on to something better.

>>337664593
I really hated that, especially since in the tutorial/stating area, the guy who explains the morality system was even saying that it isn't about being mean or evil, it's about "allowing everyone else to find their own path" which is hippy shit but respectable. Too bad in the game it turns out to just be the typical "be a douchebag" option.

Other than that, I think Jade Empire is Bioware's magnum opus.
>>
The dude in max payne 2 who's cleaning graffiti in the apartment level. First time playing i thought that the game would either not allow me to shoot him, or give some special message about killing civilians in some way or another. Instead he just dropped dead and didn't hum along to the theme anymore. It was the first time a game touched me on a personal level. The reality of mortality hit my kid brain like a truck of bricks. When you kill someone, they just die.

In Fallout New Vegas, there's one quest where you have to investigate a casino that's stockpiling guns. Their main buyer is a guy they blackmailed into it after he woke up from a drug-fueled bender next to the corpse of a prostitute.

Talking to him, it's pretty obvious that he's been set up, and I had the skills and equipment to sneak into the storeroom and destroy the stockpiled weapons myself. However, I saw a speech check to make him do it come up, and I clicked on it automatically because I was playing a speech character and that's how I do.

Anyway, I come back in a day to check up on things and my other informant is all "Hey, you better help me kill the two bosses, because they caught that guy and he slipped your name while they were torturing him to death."

I felt pretty dirty about that.
>>
>>337670558
Damn there were a lot of good quests in New Vegas after getting bored in Freeside. I got some good satisfaction from making the bosses go against each other and then kill the rest of them myself.

Still my favourite quest has to be the hotel with the guy who wants to revive cannibalism there. Even if it was buggy as fuck for me at least.
>>
>>337670558
Yeah, that guy deserved better. It's hard to resist a high speech check option when you can pass it, though (one of the few things I dislike about NV, is how it handles speech/skill checks in dialogue, with a pure "pass/fail" listed in the option). Also doing it that way you miss out on the weapons from the store room (usually the best early/mid-game way to get assault rifles, sniper rifles, etc. for free), unless you can pick the 100 skill lock.

The last time I can remember something like this would be Bioshock.

I thought the "moral choice" of harvesting little sisters was fucking retarded since saving them gave you better shit anyway. Spent the whole game harvesting them and not giving a fuck.

Then I got to Tenenbaum's little stronghold. Hearing the comments of those Little Sisters as I was exploring got to me for some reason. I think because I was remember what they were saying when I was a father/hero to them.

And then I ate the Pep Bar on the table...

Honestly, the problem about trying to make me feel bad about doing something is this.

If there is clearly supposed to be some kind of bad thing happening for doing X, then I'm prepared for something bad to happen and the impact is diminished.

If it's not clear something bad will happen if I do X, I just get mad that it didn't have the effect I wanted.

Like, let's take Atelier Totori for example. The game explicitly tells you that you must complete X within three years. It is very clear you'd get some kind of bad ending for failing this. The game does NOT tell you that you get a bad ending for not completing Y in five years and gave you no hint that you even had a time limit for Y. So you get a bad ending for failing Y. I didn't feel sad, I was just mad that I got a bad end for something I wasn't warned about.
