Chex Quest was always one of those things in gaming that I always thought only I had somehow experienced yet everyone and their dog had tried.

Samsara, the ZDoom/Zandronum mod that features a slew of retro FPS characters, gives Chexter an SSG equivalent. To declone him from Doomguy in a defensive way, the Super Large Zorcher fires a projectile that ricochets and splits into more upon impact and I think it has a little more downtime between reloads.

This is probably the case. Most monsters in Chex are simply melee range attackers. So just annihilating things with the SSG would be pretty broken.

A little of both. He comes from a race of cereal people. You see all kinds of cereal folk in the cutscene and final mission, with things like cheerio bodies (and nothing in the hole).
But at the same time, it's clearly his armor and closes over his face. Also, the armor pickups are shaped like his chex armor.
