No one hates it. It has a good sense of atmosphere and some nice level design but the guns really do feel like absolute garbage to use. It becomes a game of listening closely to the demonic spawning sound so you can run behind right up to the Imp's face while he's still spawning and put a shotgun round straight into his face so you can avoid the pain of waiting for him to produce his fireball, sidestepping it and then shotgunning his face. They went completely overboard with the imps in the game, there must be at least 300 of them

Well, The fireball is actually the hell knight fireball which is why it looks so big.

Bruisers were annoying but they were nothing because of that heart.

You could just one flashlight everything which removed the effort.

If you don't follow this specific way to kill enemies you are either being inefficient with your ammo or putting yourself at too great a risk. For instance anyone who played the game will know how absolutely retarded the Lost Souls, Cherubs and Trites are because they completely knock your view around so it's best to stay at range. The same is true of Marines which actually push you back with their weapons so you should always use the machinegun unless they're right next to you.

Don't even consider using the grenades because the horrible physics engine often causes them to fall close to you and kill you. Anything explosive is pretty much instant fucking death on any difficulty.

Right, sorry for that. Basically what I said before with the lighting and flashlight, and it adds more ammo. It tries to be more DOOM 1 and 2 than whatever DOOM 3 was going for. That's not to say DOOM 3 vanilla was bad, I just felt the horror aspect was poorly executed and pointless after an hour into the game. There's no survivablity fear, just jumpscares that you get desensitized to. That's why I prefer to play BFG; cut the bullshit and shoot everything.

I would absolutely love a DOOM survival horror game where you don't play as Doomguy and have to desperately hide and survive, though

Flashlight always on completely ruins the game. It's a huge part of the game. Also, BFG Edition is lighter, they cut down the shadow engine of the game. Basically it's an inferior port in every way. The only advantage is that you can set widescreen resolution out of the box, in vanilla Doom you need to set it in config file.

But we aren't talking about Mario. We're talking about a game that was criticized for trying to be survival horror but instead came out a jumpscape machine with admittedly wonderful atmosphere. BFG isn't for everybody, but it isn't the fucking Silent Hill HD /v/ makes it out to be.
