Remember Phantasy Star Online? We just started a little /v/ group not long ago, full of spergy little autists who remember this game fondly. We're playing on the Ephinea private server, which is pretty awesome. They've made a few quality of life changes, as well - if you played PSO and got nothing to do tonight, why not come check it out? It's only like a 500mb download, too

As much as I love PSO, I can't go through the grind again. It's very painful to start from the beginning, especially when you got nobody to play with.

Great areas and music though, really wish PSO2 didn't suck so hard.
>>
>>337638391
That's fine.
But Destiny costs money.
>>337638426
After like 5 years, the grind isn't too bad. I'm having fun. And dude, we have a gigantic /v/ group to play with. We started this project like 3? days ago and now we already have 15 people on Discord, despite me not really being active and trying to pull more people in.

I say you just jump in, say hi in Discord and install the game at your own pace. Some of these autists are playing 24/7 and nearing the Ultimate level, but I'm far more casual

You should see my PSN inbox. Also Im pretty sure if been racially profiled for my loadout and gestures.

Hes got a point though. Which game has you grinding through the same four areas of increasingly difficult enemy recolors for hours on end for the slim chance or a super rare item that might not even be usable for you based on some invisible rng god with the character choices of a Close Range Type, Ranged Marksman Type, and Magic type while being either baseline Human, Synthetic Manmade Robo, or supernatrually sensitive mutant offshoot?

>>
>>337638918
On paper they certainly sound similar in that regard, but they will still never top nazi imagery being broadcast to everyone in the lobby with no way to stop it other than being in a game or changing lobbies.

I miss the official pso gc server days where no one got banned
>>
Guys, I never played PSO, but I absolutely adored PSU on the xbox. Is having never played PSO that big of a detriment?

Also do you all have "Normal" "Hardcore" or "Sandbox" character accounts?

I miss my Fortetecher on PSU and I tried playing PSO2 but the fact so much is untranslated made me feel like I was missing important things.
>>
>>337639268
Sadly, I'm trying to get the game to work but I'm at my parent's for the night and I can't get the game to fucking load. I'll be down to play, but it won't be until tomorrow unfortunately
>>337639467
Normal. PSO, imo, is a more challenging game and thus the better game. PSU just felt a little too hand-holdy and like there wasn't a real challenge, although the game was way better. But PSO is different in a good, more challenging way.

Should clarify that I have dozens of DAYS into each game and love them both equally. Just pointing out that they're kind of the same game when you think about it and thats A-OKAY. Its a formula that works!
>>
>>337639467
Coming from PSU you'd have to get used to stiffer controls, no PAs and stat caps. They are still very similar games, though, and things like grinding weapons are a lot better in PSO. But, at the same time, you may never see max level disks.

>>337639618
Is PSO really any challenging? It can be hard when you are alone and undergeared, but a party destroys anything with few issues.
>>
>>337639909
Totally. Everything up until Ultimate is a challenge. Once your mag starts to get powerful and you start getting red drops, that difficulty begins to drop off. Low level parties in normal can still get wiped out in forest.
>>
>>337639813
Maybe I'll pick up destiny for my pee ess quadruple when it goes dirt cheap again. I might like it then.
>>
>>337639909
ultimate, without proper gear and leveling, is a challenge. Even at higher levels it can still be a challenge, depending on your setup.
>>
>>337640142
Its already $10 for the base game but youll want the $40 with all the DLC to get the end game content.

Trust me, if you love PSO like the rest of us the game will hook you. It has Halo CE tier gameplay with a RNG loot system that makes you feel that same giddy glee you did when you saw your first red item box every time a Legendary Engram drops.

It's not like they can't touch our fucking money the faggots.

We can still pay them for a product.
This is why SEGA's consoles ultimately failed.
They lack the balls and the determination for the wstern market IMO

>>
>>337640639
I don't hate it. I just think it's boring.

None of the fucking content is challenging, either. The gameplay is better, yeah, but you're never in threat of dying or wiping, especially since all the meat-of-the-game content is 12-man and the newest one has infinite self-revives and an impossible to run out time limit.

Sega of Yurop said they're "working on solutions" to get it localized recently.

I don't know why they don't just do what FFXI has always done, and just package all client updates with EN and JP + whatever other languages at the same time, where the servers are all hosted in japan.

Don't give a fuck about lag, just want to play with proper translations.

>>
>>337641543

That's your problem. Likely your antivirus (if you have one) is blocking Ephinea.dll from attaching to the executable. This is normal, because Ephinea has some client tweaks like announcing drops via sound, and putting them on the radar.

Whitelist the ephinea directory on your antivirus or disable AV when loading pso.

When you turn it off or whitelist ephinea, restart the game through the launcher. It will re-download ephinea.dll if it got removed or altered.

That's the point, especially if the MBD4 retcon means it and Aurora still haven't happened in the story yet.
>>
>>337642998
PSU was a different game both mechanically and lacked the same atmosphere PSO did.
They're similar but not similar enough to compare in a meaningful way.
Early PSU was buyer's remorse central though. Game wasn't fun to play until the expansion at the earliest, and it didn't really kick off until they dropped PS2 support and started actually updating the game with things from PSPo2/i.
By that point English PS2/PC service was already dead and xbox was just a shithole.
The last year or so of Japan's service when it went free2play was really fun though.
>>
>>337636103
why didn't you play on ultima? or are exp rates too high.
>>
>>337642965
To play story missions you have to select "One Person Mode", which is like single player on V1/V2/GC etc. Monsters have lower health and its easier. Good for grinding drops from some quests. Once you're in one person mode, go to the guild counter right where you spawn, to the left. She'll give you a list. There are also some missions you can play online only, and offline only.

I don't recommend story though unless you're bored or need to unlock something like monster weapon creation.

>>337643196
Use a controller and map it like the console version you're used to. It plays exactly the same. You will probably be thrown off by WASD, because it doesn't instantly turn or backpedal like the analog stick does.

>>337643276
You can use a teleporter pad to go down to forest without starting a quest. This way, people can join your game. If you start a quest, other anons cannot join.

>>337642998

>>337638391

>>
>>337643325
There was a real sense of community before AOTI came out. I doubt anyone here or on 4chan actually played psu from the beginning in october 2006, but stuff like 1up, firebreak, the fucking bugs in seabed needing a full team, things like that that everyone cooperated together with. AOTI improved everything and made the game a lot better but v1 PSU was pretty good still, just took more effort to get into. Anyway once AOTI rolled in and all the new classes and events rolled out, the game quality was going straight up. Everyone would heard around neudaiz and white beast and I'd just go around collecting materials on parum and moatoob-would sell catilium and goldania and shit for 300k a pop.

PSO has a better atmosphere and music, but thats about it. Theyre different games yes, but I found PSU to offer way more diversity and content.

>I doubt anyone here or on 4chan actually played psu from the beginning in october 2006
Please. I bought the PS2 version before the servers even went up and had a 25ft ethernet cable stretched across my livingroom from the next room over just to play.

It was good in a certain way, but definitely lacking. The SEGA-tier "update" schedule was the worst. That slow drip of content being unlocked off the disc. The first couple months there was literally only De Ragan and Onmagoug to run while Moatoob wasn't accessible.
Since only the base classes existed until December that year everyone was stuck using C and B grade weapons so when Moatoob was released the enemy defense made people's attacks particularly worthless.

It was definitely an experience, but it wasn't particularly diverse until MUCH later. By that point people already felt put off and didn't want to touch the game again.
>>

I only played it after the Japanese version became free to play because it was literally forbidden (in the unfigurative sense of the word) to say it's a good game in some parts of the internet, and I didn't know better.

>>337644285
I remember that. I think the xbox one actually got updates faster than the ps2/pc one. I remember the ps2/pc one being a total fucking wreck, filled with garbage hackers and billing problems. Ill never forget all the asshurt during MAG with error 65. Too bad hackers had to go and ruin yet another PS game, at least the jap side were more banhappy. I played the jp pc version the last 2 years of it. The first year could overall be considered dry even though there were great events, but this is what AOTI fixed straight up. Sheer more variety in damn near everything-weapons, classes, PAs, areas, rooms, and so on. I spent so much time gambling in the casino and hunting for rare missions, PSU was my favorite

Im a little confused. Are you saying you avoided it because you saw PS fans call it bad?
>>
>>337644532
As previously posted, the early days were trashy and it only got better as time went on.
A lot of people felt hurt by how bad the early days were and never took another look at the game. The expansion was a massive quality jump but I couldn't get any old friends to play again. "Fool me once, shame on you. etc"

If you liked it though, I'd recommend emulating Phantasy Star Portable 2 on the PSP.
If you're ok with moonrunes you could also try the standalone expansion Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity.
>>
>>337644723
I didn't just "saw" it. On PSO-W and GameFAQs you'd have people enumerate reasons why it's a garbage game, and others would rarely try to correct it (I assume because of the subscription costs). And if someone did, you'd hear how the gameplay is casual garbage and how atmosphere in a different game is different.

I mean, it's my fault I didn't try the demo, but basically yes. Though I hear AotI in its last years was much better than the game was in the beginning.

I even bought a DS instead of PSP because apparently Portable was "PSU trash" and PSZ was the true authentic successor.
>>
I tried signing up, but I was never sent an email. I checked my spam folder and everything.
>>
>>337645138
Phantasy Star Zero was a really fun game so you didn't make a bad choice, and the first Phantasy Star Portable was basically just a portable PSU with less grind.

Portable 2 was actually a successor to Universe itself with new weapons and gameplay mechanics such as shields, dodging, and Photon Arts for guns.
>>
I'm having issues getting the game to launch

Whenever I start from the client the game will pop open for a second and then close.
>>
I've been playing solo for awhile now and I'm just thinking DAMN I want to do some good ol coop

I'm level 48. Is it worth doing the Hunters Boost stuff? The quests are pretty annoying to solo since they're clearly geared towards party play.

It has a 60 minute timer and everybody's in mechs for the actual boss part.

For the record, the mech part lasts about 4 minutes before Yamato is dead.
>>
>>337645737
You have about 45 minutes to complete the mission.
You spend 5~10 minutes battling towards the Yamato then about 5~10 minutes longer fighting it. Even if you die in the A.I.S. you respawn after 7 seconds then go back to slapping the boss.
There's zero penalty and zero chance of failure. It's an interactive cutscene.

Yamato has a 50 minutes time limit, and the AIS phase has you infinitely respawn, just like Magatsu Sai. Unlike that quest, though, you are not under pressure to do your best and kill three very hard bosses in the span of 7 minutes.

Sega learned the wrong lesson from how shitty the players are at the best part of the game.

Yamato sounds pretty disappointing.

Profound Darkness was so good when I first did it that I basically stopped playing a little after. The nostalgic music(as in an arrangement of my favorite IDOLA track) and the boss itself really trumped Loser for me(though still an awesome fight). I should get back to PSO2 sometime.
>>
>>337646116

PSZ was okay, though I wouldn't call it any good compared to PSO, PSU or PSO2.

PD was a rather disappointing boss. It's hard if your MPA really sucks ass and you are the only good player, but if there's a remote whiff of competence it goes down in seconds.

The music was also disappointing. I love Phantasy Star music in general, but I expected something original for the ultimate fight. Resonant Catastrophe was a good consolation, but that quest isn't even canon yet!

I like the AIS phase, but that's because of AIS. The boss itself is okay, but it feels like they "fixed" everything that was hard about Magatsu Sai with it. Well, I mean, I've been playing PSO2 for 5000 hours and am not giving up on it any time soon, but with so many flaws one has to be interested in very specific parts of the game to willingly dive into it.

I'm wary of recommending PSO to anyone, either. All my friends I tried getting into it dropped it very soon. And it's just a very unique game, for better or worse.
>>
>>337650632

rare mags look nice but also do things when are at certain states like having 100 pb gauge or being at 1/10th of your total hitpoints. A proper rare mag will do things you want it to do at those states like shifta&deband you or make you invincible instead of using resta or NOTHING. The sato mag is particularly valuable due to the fact it makes you invincible for all of it's triggers so you can go nuts with berserk specials nearly all the time.

In addition making a rare mag with useful photon blasts and well placed stats is tricky depending on your class and section id so you will usually need to follow a specific guide to get anyway.

Always be wary of melee enemies, try and shoot every enemy if you're in a party (if you do even a little damage on an enemy that your party finishes off, you still get the EXP) save your meseta, buy some telepipes early so you can return to home base quickly, read up on how to grow MAGs (They're really useful) and overall just try not to rush into anyhing.
>>
>>337651316
Definitely. I can't even really pin-point what exactly it is that brings me back every year or two when someone asks, so I usually just leave it out of any recommendations. Doesn't help that a lot of my friends have a distaste for older graphics that aren't indie pixel stuff either. Must just be a "You had to be there" or nostalgia type deal.

I believe you can hack the PSP games to run at a full 60 without speeding up the game on PPSSPP. It didnt affect exp/drop rate, just damage. Ultimately what this means is...you get twin handguns, build a chain of 10 or so for each enemy to do what would be a regular hit in PSU. This mechanic COMPLETELY made bosses garbage. Especially if you were a hunter, where a dragon boss could stomp or swipe its tail, knock you down/back, and you lose your 20+ chain you were saving for a big hit. Remember anga jabroga, the axe ground slam PA? Was great for killing bosses in PSU, useless in psp2+ because of the fucking chain mechanic.

Some bosses like de rol le or the new jumping twin guys just werent made for it at all. And yes people would get asshurt online if you attacked before they got a chain level they wanted. Killed the pacing, as did the universal PP bar. Before it was have fun, go spam heavy, and pop a photon charge if you were out of pp. Now you had to use your plain boring regular attacks more and it just sucked.

PSP2 and infinity missed the point completely of what made PSU fun and slowed the pace down

Ultimately its up to tony and marmalade what gets changed and what doesnt. Problem is midori oku and his bandwagoners have a large voice and can be convincing. I dont even get why they want PSU back if they want to change it so it flows almost completely different than the original PSU.

It uses the JP pc client. They dont have any data that was server side---so you can kiss all those great events goodbye unless they just remake them themselves by watching videos on youtube and making them custom. I saw someone ask this question a while ago on the forums but i cant remember the name. Pretty sure midori oku answered it though.

Its still going, dont worry

Man, this thread is making me want to sob like a bitch, because PSO and PSU were fucking magical. The games, the atmosphere, the feeling of being tiny in a vast alien world. Falling in love with the world, the story, the characters -- I don't think any game will ever capture me like PSO did. Feels bad, man.

I made a big post to Midori calling them out for their terrible balance changes, but I haven't followed up on it like I wanted to. Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat as Marmalade right now, and am having terrible housing issues. I get to move 4 times in 3 years, two of which within 2 months of each other. It's fucking awesome and totally not stressful at all, especially when I include how one of my all time favourite games might get shitfucked by people who have no idea what they're talking about.
>>
>>337656060
what are the changes they want to do that will wreck things that badly? Never played PSU here.

From what I heard about Midori, it's Force buffs, isn't it?
>>

It was surprisingly enthralling the first time through, just finding all of those recorded messages lying around with their ominous portents. Especially if you were clearing all of the missions as you opened each area in sequence.

The pacing and everything just clicked.

In a nutshell, they want to bring up the hybrid classes to a level that makes them equal to the specialists. The problem with that, is that it kind of negates the useful of the specialists. The point of being a specialist is that you're really fucking good at one thing. By bringing the hybrids up to the same levels as the forte classes, you fuck the balance because now the hybrids can do what the specialists can while still being able to do their secondary function. Why play a Fortegunner when you can play a Guntecher, who can gun just as well as a fortegunner AND heal, buff, debuff and cast spells?

Additionally, they have no fucking idea what the point of the Master classes was.

I miss everything about PSU, Honestly just to name something, the atmosphere of the planets was something really nice. Parum was my favorite even though I spent most of my time in Neudaiz farming white dragon
>>
>>337656060
I think i remember you posting in a similar thread a few months ago actually. Sorry about your housing problems m8, hope you and marmalade can get that shit sorted out.

I hope tony and marmalade very carefully select what gets through and what doesnt. The end game of PSU was great. Everything and everyone was strong as fuck, it was just a matter of some classes have more utility/faster PAs than others. Id rather have it where every class is strong/has their use rather than everyone getting nerfed and making everyone kiss masterforces ass. Midori has always pissed me off with his elitist shit, this goes way back to the official sega days too.
>>
>>337656367
Yep. Sounds like they're being morons. Being specialized is supposed to make you better than hybrids.

Though, PSO suffers from "why would you ever pick humar when huney and hucast exist" syndrome. humar can't even solo better than a hucast that has traps and a way to S/D. It's pretty sad lol I still use humar, though, because i like it
>>
>>337656230
It was. Not to mention the music that just sucks you in. The colour scheme is varied and vibrant, yet at the same time some how melancholy. I've never seen anything do what PSO did. Not even PSU had that same feel. And then there's PSO's legendary music.

PSU had a few really good, atmospheric places. Ukishima felt really alien and cool, and had really fucking awesome music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTR-7y1GWbk

Grove of Fanatics music was also super fucking cool, but I can't seem to find it...

It's the issue of little functionality, and the way they combine functions. PSO games really only have a melee fighter, a shooter and a mage. Make more than one of each, and one is bound to be better than the other kinds.

PSO2 goes around the issue, but only by making each class unique at a narrow specialty. Even then, sometimes functions overlap, and then why'd you choose Hunter when you can be Braver or Bouncer, or Gunner/Ranger when you can be Braver/Gunner?
>>
>>337656393
Each planet had great variety

>parum: grassy fields amidst a mechanized planet, waterfalls, abandoned ruins, remnants of the guardians colony when it crashed into parum (ep3), the train, the HIVE colony with motherbrain etc
>neudaiz: obviously japanese inspired, lots of temples, forests above mountains with lots of water in the area, poisonous jungles, more plain areas
>moatoob: deserts, mines, ice caves, a base for the Illuminus, and the god damn casino that was goat
>guardians colony: guardians headquarters, VR simulations, the HIVE, rykros, was a little bland compared to the other planets but was more dark, still though it was a giant shopping mall outside of missions

>>337656708
Pretty much. Every class in PSU has their niche. The problem is the tards want the more support orientated classes to have equal damage output to the actual heavy hitter classes, such as forte, master, and acrofighter classes. But I mean, a good wartecher, protranser, and acrotecher are nothing to mess with either

Boggles my mind how after hundreds/thousands of hours of playing PSU, they never got accustomed to the balance sega had. Total joke
>>
I still play PSO every once and a while. Never did make it to 200 because I made too many alts. Highest I got was 182 on Gamecube.

>Boggles my mind how after hundreds/thousands of hours of playing PSU, they never got accustomed to the balance sega had. Total joke

Some people have their heads so far up their ass about how they would do it, or whatever retarded headcanon they brought up they simply are unable to see another viewpoint and act like children when someone elses differs.

>>337657168
>Braver/Gunner
Isn't that just a gimmick setup that only really works on bosses?

Things are kind of working out. I've got a new place to live, but it means moving to a new city that's a good 4 hours away. Got a good place to live lined up, lots of friends in the area, but it's stressful thinking about the fact I'll need to find a new job, worrying about making money, etc. Maybe it'll give me time to actually get some work done on my shitty game though! It's also weirdly flattering that you remember that.

I really hope Tony and Marmalade are careful, as well. I want to act as an argumentive voice to them against Midori, if only to play devils advocate and voice a different side to their arguments. There's a lot of shit they overlook. They call for buffs to Wartecher, claiming how they're so weak, but they fail to mention how insanely hilariously tanky the class is. They've something like second highest HP, second highest DFP, high EVP, and second highest MST. Additionally they have a potent heal. They're fucking paladins. Marmalade is especially a really fucking cool person. I've chatted with them numerous times, and they've always been incredibly friendly and just pleasant to be around. Despite being the head guy in charge, they make time to talk to everyone, they smile, they laugh, and somehow, are the only Phantasy Star mods not mad with power.
>>
>>337656708
I usually make a lot of the same arguements for PSO classes. People try and say it's imbalanced as shit but it's really not. It's not great, but it's as bad as people make out. HUnewearls get shit on because they're not useful in a team, but holy shit they are amazing compared to everyone else solo. It's almost like they were designed to be stronger by themselves. RAcaseals are another example -- People say they're useless, but they're the best class in the game for crowd control. Being a CAST, they get a bonus to the effects of paralysis, freeze, and... Something else, I can't remember what. In addition to that, they also have the highest ATA of all CASTs, meaning they are far and away the best class for locking down groups. Even a RAmar with his superior ATA can't lock down groups like a RAcaseal can.
>>
>>337657168
I would argue that PSO2 actually fucks up really fucking hard trying to go around the issue. The Hunter class for example, has passives that are SO FUCKING INCREDIBLY GOOD that EVERY CLASS that deals not-tech damage NEEDS them to be useful. Want to play a ranger? Better level up Hunter first! And THAT is fucking stupid. Granted, I haven't played PSO2 since like ep2, but seriously, fuck that game.
>>
>>337657472
That's Gunner in general. Yeah, Br/Gu is even more narrowly specialized, but is actually good at his niche. Gunner has rifles, and TMGs work somewhat better than bow against normal enemies, but, like, why not just pick Ranger?
>>
>>337657186
Agreed. It seems the lack of understanding the balance behind the classes is pretty prominent for the majority of players in almost every online game in the series, PSO to PSO2. Sure some aren't optimal but they WILL get you through a lot of the content and many bring a different kinda playstyle to the table, which makes each one feel fresh when you roll or change to a different one. It's all about understand the niche I think.
>>
>>337657604
Yeah, I think humar is the only one legitimately without a niche, since huney can solo better with higher ATP/DFP through s/d and a better j/z and maybe one of the female FOs since grants bonus is kinda pointless

Really not sure what could be done to make humar better to the point where people would not say "just pick hucast lol"

>>337656708
You should go on the clementine forums and voice these opinions. The more people that give counter points to Midori's bullshit, the higher the chance they might change their mind, and the higher the chance Marmalade and Tony will be like "Yeah, what the fuck?"

Oh, another thing they're doing -- They're proposing balance changes with GAS in mind -- Something that Tony and Marmalade have said are VERY UNLIKELY we will ever get.

Welp, had my fun tonight. I hope you guys will be playing over the next couple of months. Last thing I need is to finally install a game, and then have it die a month later.

>mfw this happened to me multiple times
>>
>>337657709
Hunter is like the "default" subclass for most things, but fewer classes use it nowadays. It's still the go-to class for all melee fighters thanks to auto health recovery, but at least Ranger is the only other class that has no reason to pick anything else.

Fury Stance is still too good, especially with the critical renaissance we're having.
>>
>>337657853
Oh yeah, lets also not forget the superior animations on females for the most part with swords, twin swords, double sabers, claws, daggers. not that anyone really uses claws or daggers. They do get a shittier saber animation but thats really only a problem for excal
>>
>>337657853
The nice thing about a HUmar Vs. HUcast though -- You're never going to have to babysit a HUmar. They can heal themselves, and they can even J/Z in a pinch until a FO gets theirs off. Their HP is absolutely horrendous, though. The ONLY class I think is truly broken in PSO1 are RAcasts, because they're Rangers with Hunter damage.

Can anyone give me a rundown on what the Ep. 4 story actually is? Also I know is Leo Grahart & WORKS something something
