My mom got me a gameboy pocket and kid icarus and surprised me with it after school one day. I don't even remember it being a special day at all, but it was awesome.
Very first handheld was a Game Gear with Sonic Chaos. Don't remember what year, but I would have to guess 1993 or 4. While it was neat having a color console, the screen was really bad (Ghosting everywhere) and the amount of batteries it ate more or less required a AC adapter.
First Nintendo handheld (and Nintendo console in general) was a red Game Boy Pocket and Donkey Kong in I think '97. Played the shit out of it until I got a GBC in 2000.
