In retrospect, if Mantorok sees time nonlinearly (which would be necessary for the plan in the first place), then it can probably see all possible reactions to its actions and set up complex plans by "experimenting" with alternate timelines.

You know, for a game directly inspired by Lovecraft, there are a fair amount of chapters where you unambiguously triumph over the ancients and their stooge Pious.
I played this recently, having never played it before or knowing much about it besides the sanity meter gimmick. I expected the sanity effects to be all wankery like the TV functions showing up on screen, but goddamn some of the effects really got me.
The whole game was really clever throughout and was a masterful story for a horror game. Fuck the last boss fight though, that was tedious.
