It's a map card. You walk to one of the doors that are either close, or already opened and if you have that card with the right criteria (Example: The Door needs a card with a 4 or higher) you can use it to make the save room.

There's a card (Memory Reprieve i think) that actually makes the next room to have a save crystal. It's also an important card that unlocks Ultima Weapon in the GBA Version. How? Google it.

I played the game years ago when it first came out and I still distinctly remember there being a fairly common door card that makes a room with a save point
