Diablo was always easy starting off. I didn't start dying in Diablo 2 until I got to the forge demon, and that's mostly because he hits like a truck.
It's pretty uninteresting that the better playability comes from purchasing the expansion. They should add the RMAH back to the base game or maybe even to it all.

Diablo 3 isn't perfect, but it's come a long way since the fucked up release. If you want to kill time and like power fantasy, min/maxing, character sheets, stats, brainless grinding etc then D3 is great. 'Too late' doesn't really matter since everyone starts from the beginning with a new season character once every few months anyways.
Getting to level 70 and gearing up is quite easy. The 'hard' part is if you have patience to grind mobs and mats so you can min/max your gear to perfection. THAT takes time. Also end game is all about pushing high greater rifts. After a while the mobs will 1 shot you in greater rifts, so you have to at least do a little thinking.
Also there are alot of items and sets, and together with kanais cube there's quite a lot of flexibility when it comes to builds.

Early game is never suppose to be hard, and trust me, even up to Act V on Normal is still early game. Consider it a long tutorial. Most people are capable enough to go to Master difficulty right away.
Torment 1 is the real game.

It made entire sense that I expected the normal difficulty to provide some challenge for a new character. I never said the game was trash, just the difficulty and pacing seems strange. Also suck a dick
