What could have saved it?

Using DVDs instead of proprietary discs that were easy to pirate.

Giving Sega of America more control.

More money, Sega was pretty much out of the console business before the Dreamcast even came out.
They just made a new console anyway because they're fucking madmen.
>>
>>337575651
Not fucking up with the Saturn
despite everything, I love and will always cherish both
>>
Dreamcast was so ahead of its time
>>
Japanese CEOs are fucking stupid

They released 32X, they released the fucking Saturn without games

They deserve it
>>

This

Japanese CEOs make tons of stupid decisions because of muh tradition and muh nippon. The Dreamcast was pretty much doomed to fail after the Saturn fuckup, and the PS2 was the last nail in its coffin.
>>
>>337575779
I think the Saturn would've had much better reception if it didn't keep 90% percent of it's quality games in Japan and ported them over.
>>
Better management and advertisements back when they were actually relevant. Probably skipping the Dreamcast altogether after the international failure of Saturn wouldn't have hurt either.
>>
>>337576012
>because of muh tradition and muh nippon

this is not the problem, they are just plain stupid. They couldn't sell the Genesis without Sega of America.

The retarded CEOs didn't want to drop the price of the Genesis to $199. Also they didn't released a proper 3D console because they are just stupid to hire the right people.
>>
>>337575873
Not only did they release the Saturn without games, but it was like $100 more expensive than a PS1 and weaker than it too.
>>
>>337575651
The Dreamcast was almost immediately made obsolete by the PS2 and all the hype surrounding it. If they had waited a while longer, and made it slightly more powerful, Sega could've probably survived and made a 7th gen console.
>>
>>337576135
It wouldn't have changed the fact that the PlayStation was $299 and the Saturn was $399
>>
>>337576343
>>337576378

The problem with the Dreamcast is that Sega couldn't afford lose money because of Saturn

Had they released a proper 3D console in 1994 they could handle early Dreamcast lossess.
>>
If sega released a proper 3D console Nintendo would never sell the N64 well.

The only reason the N64 sold well is because there was no competition other than the PS1
>>
>>337576378
The Saturn would've at least had a niche market.
The Saturn had all the best arcade ports, it also had a deathgrip on the shmup genre and was more 2-d oriented than the other consoles at the time.
>>
>>337576625
I am actually curious what would have happened if the Saturn dropped 3D all together and stayed as the 2D beast machine it was supposed to be
>>
Saturn was more powerful than PS1 in every aspect.. except for 3D polygons

>Another possible cause for the idea that the Saturn was primarily a 2D game system with moderate 3D capabilities is that there are quite a few 2D games that were made for it, in comparison to the PS1's library. Sony forced developers to make PS1 games exclusively 3D until some years after the Playstation's release. Combine the library differences with a couple of Industry rumors about the President of Sega of Japan deciding the architecture of the Saturn over a golf game with a buddy from Hitachi, and the same President "scrambling" to revamp the Saturn's 3D capabilities immediately after Sony publicized the PS1's specs (mind you, the 500k/1million specs, not the real ones) and you have a theory run wild with speculation that proponents will defend to their deaths. Because of this, and the fact that 3D gaming caught on and completely replaced 2D gaming in this generation, Sony has been credited as the company to bring gaming into 3D.

>>337576378
Saturn didn't have shit to play in international waters. If it had games like Grandia, Devil Summoner, Panzer had actual releases numbers it probably would have been a lot more appealing to buy.

Add to the fact you couldn't import because japanese cds didn't work with English consoles, but english cds actually worked with Japanese cds meant you were pretty wholesale fucked if you bought one.
>>
>>337575861
Yep.

>VGA 480p output while PS1/N64 were still doing 240p composite
>Built in modem and came bundled with a internet browser disc
>Arcade perfect ports like Virtual On, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Dead or Alive 2 because Dreamcast used identical hardware to the real arcade boards
>Tons of homebrew support
>>
>>337576786
>Saturn was more powerful than PS1 in every aspect.. except for 3D polygons
It was definitely more powerful than the PS1 when it came to polygons.
The Saturn's raw specs overall are much closer to the N64 than the PS1. The problem is that it was a nightmare to program for so devs couldn't take full advantage of the system.
