What games got undeservedly shit reviews from bullshit publications?
>>
NieR.
It's by no means perfect, but it deserved better than to be buried under a mountain of 5/10's and 6/10's.
>>
>>337570338
Why? The gameplay was shit and the only people who enjoyed it are Yoko Taro dickriders who circlejerk over the story and music.
>>
>>337569841
That's actually a great review though, just replace frustrating with retarded and its perfect.
>>
Kid Icarus Uprising.

I can get not wanting to put in an hour for Star Fox 64. I can get not wanting to put in an hour for The Wonderful 101.

But not taking TEN MINUTES to learn Kid Icarus Uprising's controls? Not playing past the first third of the game? Not even trying the multiplayer more than once? Come on now.

It's pretty fucking awful that anything by FromSoftware gets the pass for needing to take time to learn it, but anything by anyone else gets docked for any sort of learning curve these days.
>>
Uncharted 4.
>>
>>337569841
Yeah 5.9 is stupid
>>337570338
It deserved so. The only thing it had going was the plot but everything else is fucking mediocre
>>
>>337569841

That review was such horse shit. All those negatives are actually positives. It reads as

>I kept getting my ass kicked because I'm terrible and tried to run past the Alien
>you gradually get more powerful ie. the character has an arc
>the game is twice as long as the 8 hour ones I frequently enjoy

Isolation was excellent. It's the best Alien game ever made.

>pacing
I'll never know what theses faggots mean by that? It's not a movie, pacing in video games should be your own pacing.
>>
I've never, not once, seen a Polygon review where the closing points are any good.

Why the hell did people say this garbage was good?

Literally the whole game is walking aimlessly around a completely dark room for a doodad to open the door, which leads to another doodad to open another door, which leads to yet another doodad that opens yet another door. The level design is fucking horrible, honestly the worst I've seen in years.

The game is so on-rails it's pitiful. At one point early on there's a guy with a shotgun, and apparently you're not supposed to stray from the linear scripted path or else the whole game just appears broken. You're supposed to dip in a side tunnel, but you can just stand there in front of him and he shoots endlessly at you with no reaction, no words, and no need to reload. And despite being on hard difficulty, you can just sit there taking 10+ shotgun blasts from him. At another point in the game you can't even climb over a fucking foot tall railing, and you have to instead follow the scripted path and move some robot to open a metal tube that allows you to go through the tube over the foot tall railing. At another point I'm holding a flare when the game tells me how to set it down and I test it out, only to discover that apparently there's no fucking way to pick it up and I'm just staring at it on the ground.

Does this shit ever get good? I played it for a few hours last night and that's literally all there is to it. It's just so goddamn boring walking around a giant fucking pitch black room looking for the tiny power panel or doodad I need to open the door just to have to rinse and repeat for every fucking room after that. Why are walking sims hated on /v/ when this literal door opening engineer sim is praised as GotY?

The Witch and the Hundred Knight. I agree the game has it's problems and is not perfect but the characters and story definetly were it's strong suit. But you wouldn't know unless you actually spend time playing the game since character developement and story progression basically begins from chapter 5 or 6, I don't really remember that well.
>>
>>337570612
The OST was the best of that gen easily.
The story and ambient was superb.
Gameplay-wise, yes, it was mediocre in its execution, but it had some interesting ideas like the Divine Tree and that dungeon which suddenly turned into a 2D platformer at times.
A 5/10 is a review that only considers the mediocre aspects and ignores what NieR did well. And what Nier did well, it not only did well, it was fantastic.
>>
>>337570338
Nier's gameplay sucked ass though. The sequel looks way better
>>

>>
>>337569841
That review is absolutely right. It lost track of pacing and the script just kept on rolling.
It takes like 14 hours to complete and is repetitive.

But Isolation WAS mediocre. Even on /v/ it gets way too much praise for what it was.
>>
Pretty much any Dynasty Warriors past 2 except Hyrule Warriors which got its dick sucked because it's the first time reviewers actually played the game for more than an hour.
>>
>>337571607
But when the bad things starting to outweighs the good things, then 5/10 seems to be fair.

In the other end of spectrum, there's a games with interesting idea and good plot allegedly but with shit gameplay and got 10/10 across the boards, it's called Bioshlock Infinite
>>

These. Alien Isolation is one of my favorite horror games and Tropical Freeze is one of my favorite paltformers.
>>
Wonderful 101 is really the poster boy for this shit for 8th gen

>WAAAAAAAAAH IT'S TOO HAAAAAAAAARD
>WHAT DO YOU MEAN I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT???????!!!
>WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH WONDER PINK IS SEXIST
>WAAAAH THIS GAME'S CONTROLS ARE AWFUL IT'S TOTALLY NOT ME

I traded alien after a few days. If other people liked it great but I thought it was a boring mess.

Not sure why they called it isolation when there were other people on board the ship. It took away from the atmosphere of being trapped with just the alien and robots.

It's not very deep but god damn is it satisfying, especially once you unlock the two handed swords.
>>
>>337570628

The only issue I had with it was the Alien sometimes has some bullshit wins, like it seemed to spawn right up your asshole, and that the game did have some pretty hefty padding in the last third.

But otherwise, it was pretty fucking amazing.
>>
>>337571851
I do not think they outweight them at all since the good aspects are so good.
The gameplay in NieR is not that terrible either. It's just mediocre, not terrible.

Literally every musou game ever honestly.

Like, try and read a sengoku basara from ign, literally 2 paragraphs with no mention of progressive level ups and item unlocks.

Hyrule Warriors got higher scores than games objectively better because "muh zelda" and it fucking infuriated me.

I love Nier but I'd give it no higher than a 7-7.5/10 at best. It's metacritic right now is 68 and that seems perfectly reasonable.

>>
>>337570338

good story and soundtrack aren't enough to make up for mediocre gameplay, we all know they had a shoe string tier budget, but there's multiplat releases and there's kickstarter, Yoko Taro was unenmployed for several years before Nier 2, what did he do instead of working his ass off to find money? Write shitty columns on Famitsu and found a company made of 4 people, fucking WOW, this guy is god damn stupid for someone that makes thought provoking stories like those.

Not a great game, he'll maybe not evens good one. But it didn't deserves the 4/10s it got from critics.
>>
>>337572952

The combat in the Enhanced Edition is shit. I can't imagine how bad the original release was. It does deserve better since WRPGs are 90% storytelling, and dull gameplay is standard for most western games.
>>
>>337570628
Ryan Macaffrey is a fuck boi, I used to like him but I realized after listening to so many different podcasts other than his, he's so fucking vanilla and boring, I wish they would get a new host for Unlocked. His opinions are so shit.

Wolfenstein The New Order has awkward pacing sometimes. The cutscenes were prerendered and had would have a lot of stuff going on quickly, and the breaks between cutscenes and gameplay were awkward. Same thing happened in Halo 5, but now you had a squad that did basically nothing, and they wouldn't help jack shit on Legendary, which would ruin the flow of your progress through difficult sections

I can see why someone would play the first 20 hours or whatever the were allowed before release and think "Surely this is going to go somewhere" and give it a good rating, the real holes in the game don't start showing up until about then. Kojima played everyone like a damn fiddle.
>>
>>337575539
But you have to agree - story was shit and almost non-existing.

Gameplay only doesn't warrant 10/10

lot of games get near perfect scores purely for story, design and music

while nier didn't had a dmc tier gameplay it still had an ok action-adventure combat and gameplay beside it's already good story, design, music combination. When other games get near perfect scores for much less I don't see how this game deserves a 5/10 rating from reviewers, that only the shittiest games in the world get.
>>
>>337572919
Yes and no. There was an attachment that you could get that put a second circle pad on the 3ds and it works with Kid Icarus, but it wasn't built exclusively for it, and it doesn't come with it
>>
>>337575539
tranq & fulton is not great gameplay.
and before you say you have freedom of choice.
No, you don't unlock freedom unless you spend time playing it as a full time tranq & fulton game..
>>
>>337572919
It did come with some kind of cradle.

Uprising's controls make perfect sense as dual analog, but the only way to get that is through the circle pad pro peripheral.
>>
>>337575768
>When other games get near perfect scores for much less I don't see how this game deserves a 5/10 rating from reviewers, that only the shittiest games in the world get.

Other games have other modes rather than shallow and janky story mode.
>>
>>337576692
like bioshock infinity, or whatever other barebones shooting gallery or adventure games with a 10 hour long story mode and no replayability that got near perfect scores?

nier's combat would have been even godlike with all those skills if not for the enemies being such huge damage sponges. They made the progression a lot more tedious especially when you could die from a few hits and start cutting through them over again.
