Is it recommended to finish the game alone or in coop? Is the coop campaign different from the single player one?
There's no co op campaign.
Just a few co op missions.

Play through it in single player. I recommend Rikkimaru -> Ayame -> Doctor.
Co-Op is more of a battle mode IIRC. Still love this game and play it almost every year but I think the last time I played co-op was ten years ago.
