I've never thought gen 1 had BETTER designs, in fact I think objectively, no gen can really be better, but I do personally prefer gen 1 and 2. The designs look a lot more organic and simple, usually quite symmetrical. I'm not a huge fan of Pokemon who just look really uneven like Garbodor or Vanillux, they look messy. But I enjoy every new gen's dex anyway. gen 6's was especially good for me.
