Trying to get a slice of a monopolistic market (taking monopoly to mean just one big, dominant player) is one of those things that sounds good to the top brass, but tends to rarely ever get executed well in reality.
To break a monopolistic situation like with Steam (or Google as a search engine as an analogy) means you have to be consistently better than them, which is fucking hard when you're playing catch up. Being on par or marginally better is not enough. Not to mention Ubisoft and Microsoft having terrible reputations for respecting privacy.
